    1. Re: New Harkey Line?
    2. We need some kind of coding system so that we can distinguish all these Johns! Every time I try to write on this topic, I get seasick. (Kay, the John HARKEY who Nancy says died in 1796 was Sidney Levi's grandfather, not his father. Sidney Levi's father John died 1865 in Illinois.) I agree with Kay and Mary: We go around and around with the same information, some of it reliable, some of it questionable. We need to hear from descendants of more HARKEY lines. And we really need documentation. As far as I can recall, we have heard from descendants of one child of David HARKEY (b abt 1750), namely, George Martin HARKEY (b abt 1774). Does anyone know whether David had more children and who they were? So many avenues left to explore! Alma

    3. I can not add information to our Martin and John problem. I just go over and over the same information I have and can't find any new clues. Kay sent me one time a letter from Nancy saying that John was an orphan and lived in household of Jonas Lipe-- he was the brother of my 4th Greatgrandfather The Lipe family came from Switzerland- my line joins them with Julia Ann Lipe and Levi Harkey. - grandson of Martin. Sidney Levi Harkey said that Jonas Lipe was (writing to his girls) "Married to Your Grandmothers Aunt" He was married to 1 Christina Meisenheimer and then Christina Huber/Hoover????? From what I read in Sidney L. Harkey's private Journal --He was not firm on dates or information on his earlier ancestors before his father. From the LDS Germany -- Johannes Herche parent was Conrad and his parent was Melchoir and His was Adam-- all living in Sterbfritz Hesse Nassau Germany. Possibly moved there after the ?100 years war? From Switzerland. Interesting to note that Melchoir's wife was Weigand with a connection to Lipe. I am just rambling on and on. We still need German information. I am waiting for some. Hopefully. There is maybe still a son of Johannes Herche. Missing listed in places as JOHN. IF Johannes Herche is ours>??? We are building a house on sinking sand. We have to get the early stuff. We may never find proof but we have to find enough so we can agree with each other. Mary Russell [email protected] [email protected] Glasgow Kentucky

    1. New Harkey Line?
    2. Gator
    3. Hello Nancy, Alma, and Mary, and all of us Harkey researchers, I know that the few of us have shuttled this JOHN d. 1796 and was father of Sidney Levi Harkey, around most of the summer. Either we have incomplete, incorrect or intermixwed information. PLEASE anyone in our interest group who might have additional information on this part of the line post it. I still wonder if when researchers discovered the NC early records that somehow HARKEY families were accidently assumed to all be of the same immigramt and in truth there were errors made. No specifics here----only a thought for all of us to unfold this mystery. My Henry, a son of Martin, had a John d. 1846, b. unkown(another ?), but the dates don't match for Nancy's John. Also, is is stated that Nancy's John came from Switzerland--- It seems to be believed that the Johannes Herche on the Lydia came from Germany or Holland. Perhaps he lived in Switzerland, traveled through Germany and sailed from Holand and the origin depended upon who was telling the story! At any rate, it's important to have your input HARKEYs so please post. Kay Go Gators! Steve "GATOR" Wood "The Ball is Shaped to be Thrown" [email protected] "Pressure is the Best Defense"

    1. Re: Re: New HARKEY line?
    2. I'm happy to see Nancy Broersma joining the HARKEY list. Welcome, Nancy! And thanks for providing a Harkey name that starts with V. Perhaps Valentine will turn out to be one of those markers for following family lines. Mary, I don't think the John who married Elizabeth DOUB and who is Nancy's ancestor can be the same John who married the Elizabeth with no known last name and who is my ancestor. Some "facts" do match up, but the death years don't match, and death years seem to be more reliable data than most. Nancy's John died about 1796, leaving a young son, John, and a widow who remarried. Sidney Levi HARKEY relates this information as the son and grandson of those Johns, and I think that information can be trusted. (I'm less sure of the Martin great-grandfather part; might be some blended histories.) "My" John definitely didn't die until 1821. That's the year he made his will. I doubt that his widow, Elizabeth, remarried, since their children would be pretty independent by then; she probably went to live with one of them. (That's pure conjecture.) It looks like we're back to more Johns than we can account for, but I think Nancy has given us some new and valuable information. Nancy, Joseph Harkey's family history says that John and Sarah (Walcher) Harkey moved to Illinois at the same time as Martin Harkey "der Junge" (b 1771; m Christina MENSINGER), who he (JH) says was the younger brother of John ("my") HARKEY. Did Sidney Levi ever elucidate his relationship to that family? Alma [email protected]

    3. I do not think this is a new Harkey line---just slightly different dates on the old one. Martin Harkey born 1744 or 1750 not much difference Son John married to Elizabeth I didn't have her last name. b 1765 or 1769 They had a son John b 1796 who married Sarah Walcher---I didn't know who this John married where he died or who his children were. But members of this family did go west as Alma can testify and as several others on the list know. Of John and Elizabeth's children --- Martin Luther/Catherine Conder ->>>>-Texas Susannah ???? Peter/ Peggy Drew ??? two daughters---?? John ??? Daniel David/Bary Ann Bankston or Mgt. Thompson> Georgia and Missouri Solomon and Sophia Cress--->> Illinois >>>>> California I think this is just more of Martins family --Who agrees or disagrees? Does anyone of us have proof of where Martin was actually born? Does anyone of us have proof os Martin Harkeys actual birthdate.? 1. Re: John V. HARKEY Sr.
    2. Dear Harkeys, The introductions and reintroductions are great! I hope everyone will get around to posting. One item intrigues me. Sandra Glenn mentioned a John V. HARKEY Sr. The probable birth date and the date of his will (1821) suggests that he is the same person as the John HARKEY Sr. who is the son of Martin HARKEY and Catherine BARRINGER (and the father of my ancestor, Daniel David HARKEY). I have never seen the name John with the middle initial V. I have a copy of John HARKEY Sr.'s 1821 will, and it doesn't have a middle initial. Nor do I see a John V. HARKEY in the censuses. Is there a document in which the middle initial V. appears? If there is such a document, is it possible that the V is not a middle initial but an abbreviation for "Vater" (father), to distinguish him from a son John? Alma Johnson [email protected]

    3. As the HARKEY "list owner", I have finally roused myself to post my "Who am I?": I am an orphan of sorts, since my only Harkey is Mary Y. HARKEY, b. abt. 1792 in Tuscaloosa, AL; m. Matthew Pittman; d. abt 1860 in MS. From there, it is: Evan Alexander PIITMAN Benjamin Franklin PIITMAN Tabitha Catharine PITTMAN Mary Katherine ROBERTS yours truly. I am still hoping to connect Mary Y. to her line. Anyone have any clues? Has anyone been enrolled in (or are you downloading the web pages for reference) the Virtual University class on genealogy research on the web? Check it out at: http://www.vu.org/channel33/today/ A new lesson comes up each Monday, but they seem to take them down after only a week or two. ___________________________________________ Sob Story & Words of Advice: Don't upgrade that PC, just pass it on and buy a new one. 1. A North Carolina Harkey
    2. I have posted before and enjoy reading about all the Harkeys. My name is Sandra Secrest Glenn. My maternal great grandfather was James Milton Harkey who lived in Indian Trail NC. 1858-1927. His father was John Fulwood Harkey (1831-1884) His home was within a few miles of his son. John F. Harkey's father was John M. Harkey Sr.(1795-1883). I have documents that substantiate this. What I write next is only what I believe to be true because I cannot find any cemetery records or wills that indicate that John M. Harkey is the son of John V. Harkey Sr. I believe that John V. Harkey Sr was born in 1765 and I have a will of his dated 1821. He may be buried in an old cemetery near the present Morning Star Church which is located near Indian Trail NC. For some reason the original church was destroyed and rebuilt further down the road. However parts of the old cemetery rock wall and a few unreadable stones remain. I believe that John V. Harkey and Elizabeth are buried here, but I have no proof. I do have an old Harkey bible that gives the birth date of John M. Harkey as 1795. I have traced down his homeplace and I know one of the Harkeys that has one of the old logs out of the cabin. I hope the Harkey root list will keep going and I want to thank all those who have shared information with me. I would love to order some of that Harkey honey. Is that possible?
