    3. I have the list of Children for Jacob Harkey and wife Catherine Teator who were having children between 1795 and 1818 in Cabarrus Co. NC I do not have lists of children for all of their children. I do not have any children for Elizabeth Harkey and John Eudy they married sept 24, 1830 I have the descendants of Israel Mathias Harkey and Catherine Furr If anyone needs them I will share. I probably don't have all of them. Did Sarah Harkey and David Eudy have children ? Did Jacob Harkey Jr. and Esther Sides have children ? Did Polly Harkey born after 1805 have a husband or children? How about Eli Harkey and wife Barbara Dry . I understand he died in little Rock? in 1864. I have the descendants for my GGGrandpa Levi and also for Moses M who married Eleanor Fink bur I don't have anything on Margaret Harkey who was born in 1817 I know that Anna Catherine Harkey married Solomon Lowder but don't have further info. Can anyone tie into any of these lines. ? Mary Russell [email protected] listowner [email protected] Tom Russell [email protected]

    1. [HARKEY-L] For your grins, Info from San Saba County, Texas History
    2. San Saba Co., Texas, History book The following is from that book. Daniel Riley Harkey is the gggrandson of John and is the patriarch of one branch of the San Saba Harkeys. Daniel Riley Harkey was born in Yell Co. Arkansas in 1829 and he and his wife died in San Saba in 1869 leaving 13 children in the charge of the oldest son Joe Harkey who was 16 at the time. Daniel Riley was the first Peace Office in San Saba and his two oldest sons Joseph M. (Joe) was elected sheriff in 1880 and his younger brother Daniel Riley (Dee) Harkey was a deputy in 1882. Daniel Riley (Dee) Harkey left San Saba in the 1880-90 period and moved to Las Cruces where he was Sheriff for many years. He was a lawman of some renown and I think died in the 1920-30s period. Dee Harkey wrote a book about his career in law enforcement in southern New Mexico called "Mean As Hell". It was first published as a small paperback (Gold Medal I believe) in the 1930's-40's. In recent years it has been published by UNM Press here in a larger quality paperback edition and sells for about $12 to $15. There are three Riley Harkeys in this family and that can be very confusing. Daniel Riley Harkey born in Arkansas in 1829 married his first cousin Margaret E. Smith. Their son was Daniel Riley (Dee) Harkey who moved to New Mexico. There is another Riley Harkey who also married his first cousin Caroline Barbara Harkey and this Riley is a cousin to Daniel Riley Harkey mentioned above and is from another branch that settled in San Saba. They all are descendents of John Harkey. I have not looked further than than the San Saba Co. History but there should be a lot more available from other sources particularly the census records.

    3. Alma, I see no one has answered this. Before Israel Mathias Harkey went to Texas some of his sons and Levi's sons were Indian Scouts - that would be Riley Harkey for one. They liked the land around San Saba and they returned to Arkansas to tell Israel Mathias Harkey and the others about it. They decided to move and made up a wagon train and moved possibly around the middle of 1850. I would really love to know who all went as I think there were not only Harkeys but possibly McCarley's and Lipes. We find that many of our lines of Harkeys have been Lawmen. Thus several served as Texas Rangers. One of another of our lines went to California and was a Sheriff there for many years during the Gold Rush years. Maybe some members of the list with stories about their Lawmen Harkeys could tell the rest of us about them. 3. I don't know about the Miller family. Maybe some of the other Harkey researchers will. I think that Sarah Harkey who married John Miller was the dughter of Henry Harkey Who was born in 1765? and Married to Maria Melcher. He was a son of Martin Harkey and Catherine Barringer. Some of the others will have to fill in the blanks for you and confirm my findings. Register. 2nd ed. 233 pp., indexed. (1971), repr. Balto., 1993. $20.00 Compiled from original records in the North Carolina Department of Archives and History, this work lists 14,000 heads of households and provides an enumeration of individuals in each household by age, sex, and race. In addition, individuals named are listed under a reference to the original census page, thus furnishing the researcher with a key to the manuscript records. Based on a special state enumeration, this 1784-87 census names many individuals who had left North Carolina by the time of the first federal census of 1790. 1025. MARRIAGE RECORDS, North and South Carolina, From the Earliest Colonial Days to the Civil War. Comp. by William M. Clemens. 295 pp. (1927), repr. GERMAN, SWISS, DUTCH, FRENCH and Other Immigrants to Pennsylvania from 1727 to 1776, A Collection of Upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of. By I. Daniel Rupp. 583 pp., illus., indexed. (1876, 1931), repr. Balto., 1994. $30.00 The body of this work consists of 319 ship passenger lists, with the name of the ship and its origin, arranged by date of arrival. Also included is a listing of over a thousand settlers who came to Pennsylvania from other states. There is an index of ships and an eighty-four page index of surnames. 5615. LUTHERAN Baptisms and Marriages, Early, In Southeastern Pennsylvania. By John C. Stoever. 107 pp., indexed. (1896), repr. Balto., 1988. Temporarily out of print. John Casper Stoever, one of the first clergymen to serve early Pennsylvania- German settlers, had a ministry in southeastern Pennsylvania for fifty years. He kept a record of the baptisms and marriages he performed in his missionary travels, and these were done from 1730 to 1779. These records were translated into English and published in book form in 1896, but that edition, unlike this, had no index. This book has two sections, one of baptismal records and the other of marriage records, both arranged chronologically. Typically the baptisms give the location, the child's name, the parents' names (usually the father), the dates of birth and baptism, and the names of the sponsors. The marriage records give the names of the newly-weds, the marriage date, and the town or county of residence. There are at least 6,000 persons mentioned in this work. 1835. PENNSYLVANIA BIRTHS, 1675-1875, Early. By Charles A. Fisher. 107 pp., wrappers. (1947), repr. Balto., 1996. $9.00 Although the actual coverage of this magnificent collection of birth records is confined principally to the counties of Berks, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union, it does, in instancing several thousand births from eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania and the middle and southern sections of the Susquehanna Valley, encompass a significant portion of the state of Pennsylvania. The text is arranged alphabetically in each of the several sections by the surname of the principal subject. As a general rule data given include the name of the child, date of the birth or baptism, names of the parents, and names of sponsors (often relatives). By any conservative estimate at least 10,000 persons are mentioned in the text. 4564. PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN Church Records, Births, Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, Etc. With an Intro. by Don Yoder. 3 vols. 2,371 pp., illus., indexed. Balto., 1983. The set: $135.00 Per vol.: $45.00 Here in three volumes the genealogist has access to all of the church records ever published in the Proceedings and Addresses of the Pennsylvania German Society. These records are indispensable to anyone interested in Pennsylvania- German origins, but until now they have been almost impossible to locate as few libraries have a complete file of this scarce serial publication. From the beginning the Society showed an interest in publishing the earliest-known records of the German Reformed and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania. With Vol. III (1893) it began the task of putting such records into print. Church records were deemed then to be the backbone of Pennsylvania-German genealogy, and nothing has happened to change that idea. Before the Society wound up its project, it had succeeded in publishing the records of a great many key churches in southeastern Pennsylvania--Lancaster, York, Lehigh, Montgomery, and Northampton--the heartland of Pennsylvania- German country. In these three volumes are births, baptisms, marriages and burials, the records that identify people and their relationships to one another--not only parents and children, husbands and wives, but witnesses and sponsors as well. A staggering 125,000 persons are mentioned in these records, and every one of them is cited in the new indexes, which have been painstakingly compiled especially for this publication. The records themselves answer the usual who, where and when questions, but because of their magnitude, because of the vast number of people who figure in these records, they must now be accounted, in the aggregate, as the very basis of Pennsylvania-German genealogy. (For a complete list of the contents write the publisher.)

    3. Hello Harkeys, I'm having a hard time finding records or proof for my Harkey Line. To date I don't recall anyone from my specific line making themself known on this Surname List. My John married Christine Beever on June 3, 1813. His father was Henry Harkey m. Mary. The grandfather would have been Old Martin. Children of John and Christina(Tina) were Christopher, Daywalt, Catherine, Jesse (my direct line)b. 4 June 1822, Esther, John Weilie b. 20 Nov. 1824, Susanna b. 17 Aug. 1826, Margaret b. 21 Dec. 1827 and possibly Ruben. If any of these names sound like a line you are researching, please respond. If you'd rather e-mail: [email protected] Go Gators! 1. [HARKEY-L] Children of James HARKEY
    2. Dear Judith, Thanks so much for listing not only the children of James HARKEY, but also all the other important information. I've been interested in the movement pattern of the HARKEYs in and out of North Carolina. I suppose James HARKEY simply stayed in one spot in Montgomery Co. NC, and the county changed under his feet to become Stanly Co. in 1841. So many HARKEYs were on the move in the late 1840s. My line (Daniel David HARKEY, b 1797, son of John HARKEY, who was eldest son of Martin "the Elder") left NC about 1821-22 and lived in Georgia, but he, too, started west in 1848-49. He was in Pontotoc Co. MS for the 1850 census. The story is that he intended to join the California gold rush but got no farther than the boot-heel of Missouri and decided that the country was too lush and productive to pass up. I do wish I knew whether the various HARKEY families kept in touch with each other--for example, did Daniel David in Pontotoc MS know that James was in Pope Co AR and Jacob's children were in Yell Co AR? In your listing of James HARKEY's children, I notice that two of his sons died on the same day-- John E. HARKEY, age abt 22, and James HARKEY, age abt 13, both died on 9 March 1862. Do you happen to know the story, whether it was by accident, illness, or a tragedy of the Civil War? Alma Roark Johnson [email protected]
