    3. Hi All! After doing a little more research on Bascom Somerfield Harkey, I have found he died Oct 18 1940 m: Mamie Jones who was the d/o Henry T. Jones and Mary Pritchard. This couple had at least one dau - Lora Harkey who was b: Jul 17 1905 and m: John Benton Scott in Jun 1928. Bascom Somerfield Harkey was the s/o Wilburn David Harkey and Margaret McEachern. Wilburn David Harkey was the seventh son of Daniel David Harkey, Sr.(who by the way also a seventh son) and Mary A. "Betty" Bankston. This couple had nine sons: Samuel Jones, William A, Daniel David Jr, Wilburn David, Hiram, Newsom and Newton (twins), Francis M. and Jasper H. All born in GA. Margaret was the d/o of Lewis McEachern who was born in Scottland. Margaret had a sister, Sarah E. "Betty", who married Samuel Jones Harkey - brother to Wilburn David. Wilburn and Margaret had at least six sons, but I've only gotten the names of four - Lee, Thomas, Fletcher and Bascom Somerfield. Any help on this family would be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi, I am a descendant of the Harkeys of Mecklenburg and Union Co. NC. My grandmother was Ethel Harkey Hemby. Here is what I know about my line: John M Harkey Sr. born in 1796 married to Sarah Baker and later Hannah Baker. I have pictures of their graves and a will. Their children were Ambrose, Clark W., John Fulwood, and Betsy Matilda, (John and Betsy were twins) Their births are recorded in the Mornigstar Church Records in Meck. Co. John Fulwood is my grgr grandfather. Johh Fulwood Harkey married Drucilla Jane Harkey (a cousin we think). Their children were: James Milton, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas, Ida F. Ella D. James Milton Harkey married Mary Jane Rogers. He is my gr grandfather. Their children were: Daisy, Ethel, Lillian, John, Vernon, Walter, and Annie. James Milton lived in Indian Trail NC. Ethel Harkey Hemby married Will Hemby and had several children including my mother Annie Lee Hemby Secrest. I am Sandra Secrest Glenn. I live in Union Co NC about 10 miles from the place that John Harkey lived in 1796. I know most of the Harkeys around here doing research and we do not know where the John Herche of 1765 is buried. I have been trying for years and years to prove that John Harkey of 1796 was the son of this John. I cannot find him listed in John's will ( John of 1765) Maybe he was too young. There is an old Luthern Cemetery in a field beside a man's house and there are a few stones left standing. The names are illegible. This is where I think John Harkey of 1765 and his wife Elizabeth are buried. This was the location of the first Morningstar Church and cemetery. I have not done much research in Cabarrus Co. where a lot of the Harkeys lived. John Herche of 1765 could be buried there. Anyway this is about all any of the Harkeys that I know in this area know about our ancestors. I am putting this on the family tree maker but I have not finished as yet. I am most willing to share anything I have. I have pictures of Morningstar Church where a lot of the Harkey ancerstors are buried and I will be glad to have copies made of the church and the grave stones. I have promised Mary the gravestone pictures. I will have the summer free to do this as I am a teacher, so it may be June before I can get it all done. I will also be glad to make some videos of the church and area. Thanks for all the help many of you have given me. Your NC Cousin Sandra

    2. Margaret Nan Harkey
    3. Hello Harkey Cousins! Just a note to let you know that my surgery (a month ago) was very successful, thanks to your thoughts and prayers! My recovery is coming along well--I’ll be able to get back to teaching in one more week. Now for my “brick walls”. Simply put, my great, great grandfather was Jacob HARKEY, son of Levi HARKEY and Julia LIPE. I know very little about him, other than he married Nancy Amanda (?) ADNEY and lived in Yell County and Scott County, Arkansas. Their children included: Alice Justenia Letitia Harkey Cinderella Clothilda Arlington Harkey Julius Wellington Cromwell Harkey (my great grandfather) Murat Otho Meulus Harkey Edith Ida Harkey Haygood Redford Summers Harkey (The three names before the surname is not proven on all of these names, except for Julius W.C.) The only other information that I know about Jacob is that he was married to Miss Jones. 1880 Scott County, Arkansas census listed his wife as Elvira. Family information says they had a son named Vee Ex Zee (yep, you read correctly) in 1880 or 1881. Jacob died on a cattle drive about 1882. My questions: What cattle trail could Jacob possibly died along? Could he have joined his Harkey cousins in Texas to drive cattle? If so, what trail(s) would they have taken? Is there a way to find out more information about his death or where he was buried? What happened to Vee Ex Zee and his mother? Has anyone else heard this story? My mother’s Arkansas family had heard it--long before my parents met in Oklahoma! Hope someone has some creative ideas for searching this information. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers--the prayers truly gave me a peace that is beyond my understanding! Margaret Nan Harkey Kaufman, TX

    2. Mary Russell
    3. Tom nothing surprises me about Harkeys. Martin first appears in Mecklenburg Co. NC when he bought land in 1769. This is the one married to Catherine Barringer. She was not from the same Barringers as John P. Mathias etc. at least not that I can find. Let us call this Martin 1744 the year we think he was born . He had a son Martin 1771 who married Christine Mensinger. Martin 1771 had a son Martin 1813 who married Polly Cress Martin 1744 had a son John who had Martin 1789 who married Catherine Condor. David Harkey son of Martin 1744 had a son Martin 1816 who married Polly Barnhart. With so many Martins it is always confusing. This very old information is hard to sort out. Thanks for keeping at it. 1. Re: [HARKEY-L] John Harkey
    2. Hi Mary and all, Kay and I slogged through the same question last summer, after Kay received the Sidney Levi HARKEY family history from Nancy Broersma. We came to the same conclusion: If we assume that both Nancy's info and Joseph Harkey's info are correct, then Sidney Levi's grandfather John (Sr.) is NOT our "Old" Martin's son John (Sr.). The main reason for this conclusion is the death date given in each account. Sidney Levi's grandfather John (Sr) died about 1796, leaving his son John (Jr.) an orphan who was farmed out. The John (Sr.) who was the son of Martin "the Elder" died testate in 1821. There are, as you mentioned, several name coincidences--Martin, John, and Elizabeth--but those names are common in all the HARKEY lines we know about. They are probably just as common in all the HARKEY lines we don't know anything about. Alma Roark Johnson [email protected]

    3. Kay I think it was you sent me the" Boersma" papers listing Martin Harkey no wife and son John Harkey who married Elisabeth Doub. This John had a son John who married Sarah Walcher. I am very confused as to why people do not think that the Martin above was not our Martin who married Catherine Barringer. He had a son John b. 1765 who married an Elizabeth and they had a son John who married and we didn't have the name of his wife. Martin's son John left a will in NC. John's children scattered. His son Solomon/Sophia Cress, settled in Illinois. Martin Luther/Catherine Conder to Texas. Daniel David/ Mary Elizabeth Bankston or Mgt Thompson to Dunklin Co. Mo. Peter/ Peggy Drew stayed in NC I feel pretty dumb about all these Johns but this Martin with son John with son John seems too good a match. I must be missing something.
