I live in Billings, MT. My folks (Marjorie Elizabeth Terry Young and Theo Young) left TX in 1941 to move to Wyo. I had little actual contact with family (am an only child, now age 50), but do have wonderful stories about the "Harkey Boys", Joe and his sons; also some nice pictures of them. Please let me know what resources are available--reunion, books, etc. Nice to meet you! Jane

I'm an only child, age 50, my parents left TX in 1940 to move to Wyo. My only connection with family was my mom's stories and the cherished copy of Mean as Hell. Josiah Mathia Harkey is my mom's grandfather. I have terrific pictures of him as an elderly man. PLEASE let me know about newsletter, reunion, book on lineage, etc!!!! Jane
I have that Moses G. married Caroline Murdock in 1880. He was born in 1833. I have Tobias and Sophia getting married in Jan. 1824. They must have had other children that I don't know about. I only have Moses G. and Milas. I also have Margaret Cline as Moses first wife but don't know who told me that? You say Catherine Earnhardt? What was the years of their marriage? Is Margaret Cline totally wrong and is this the Moses G that married Caroline Murdock. Do you have months and days when he was born , died ? I only have the years 1833 and 1911 Is Catherine Earnhardt the mother of Harvey Tobie Harkey born Aug. 12, 1877. On his death cert. his mother is listed as Caroline Murdock but she didn't marry Moses G. until 1880? Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com http://www.scrtc.com/~bird
I have some information on Moses G. Harkey Iredell Co. NC born Dec 16, 1880. He was a son of Tobias Harkey and wife Sophia Hartline. Tobias was a son of Henry Harkey and Mary Melchor and Henry was Martin Harkey and Catherine's son. Moses G. was married two times first to Margaret Cline. They must be the parents of Harvey Tobie Harkey because his birth was Aug 12, 1877. He married twice 1. Laura Jane Stevenson and 2, Mae Shoemaker. Moses G. Harkey married Ellen Caroline Murdock in 1880 and their children were James Charles Harkey born 1881, John David Harkey born 1883 and Cora Lee Harkey born 1885. James Charles Harkey married, Mary Horton John David Harkey married Hope Estelle Brown Cora Lee Harkey married Robert Leonard Stevenson. Most of these Harkey's are buried in Bethany Presbyterian Church , Bethany, Iredell, NC. This information was sent to my by Randy Murdock who is searching "Murdock" genealogy. If any of you have Murdock genealogy please let me tell him your address. Any corrections to this information? Please write to the list. Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com
Tom, I don't think Jacob Haggey would be one of our Harkey's because -- Jacob Harkey son of Martin was born in 1768 so was too young to have done anything in that war unless he did it at age 9 or 10. He is also the only Jacob Harkey that I know of from that era. Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com http://www.scrtc.com/~bird > of service in the militia." > (pg. 160) > Sept. 30 (1778, Capt. ...These records provide proof of military service in the Revolutionary War. They are particularly important because of the loss of many of the North Carolina records of service in the militia." (pg. 160) Sept. 30 (1778, Capt. Moore's Co.) John Booth Robert Gimaney John Buiss John Hollis >>>>>>>>>>>>> Jacob Haggey<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Aldeed Reed Jarrot Wood Aventon Reed... I have seen several variations that, with a "liberal interpretation" could be some of the numerous missing kin out there. Comments from the learned, please, in good time. Tom
Does anyone have any information on William R Harkey b. ca 1820. Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. I am interested in who his parents were as well as his wife and children. Thanks
Have any of you looked at the message boards? This is the address: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.harkey If you want to look at my puny efforts at HTML go look at the List and Announcement page on that board. <G> Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com
Guys, I manage 20 of these surname lists and I have a big problem. I am being bombarded with that new virus called surcam? It is the one that says " I send this attachment for you" or similar message. I have not opened any and my computer is not infected but some one on one or more of my lists IS INFECTED. You know that a virus can not come through the rootsweb system because they are protected but our private computers can and do get infected. I am asking all of you to update your virus program so it will recognize this new worm. If you do not have a virus checker program please go to this site and get a free scan of your computer. We really need to stop this barrage. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/ I hope none of you are infected but if you are you need to know it. Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com
Harkey, Daniel married Sarah Hamil 18 Nov 1851 John Harris, MG pg B449 Surely, someone knows this couple. <G> Good day to all the list. Tom
Re: Mary's recent message. I was playing around on images.google.com, did a web search on Herche, and found a very long file "Descendants of Adam Herche." It didn't help me any, but some of you may find something. --clif
Since I Administer about 16 lists and the message boards to go with them I have spent lots of time lately looking at message boards. I noted that there was one for HERCHE but there is no email list to go with the message boards. I know there are Herche families living in the United States who may or may not be related to us Harkeys. I thought if these Herche folks found this board and decided to discuss Herches on it that I wanted to know so I asked for and got the right to be Admin. of that message board. If any of you have any Herche information, I would appreciate you posting it on this page. The address is.... http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexechtx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.herche There is only one query on the boards right now but maybe we can give it a start. Thanks for listening. Tom, I don't know how I missed your query of June 28, in which you ask for the identity of four HARKEYs listed as serving in the Missouri 2nd Cav. Co. D, but I happen to know the answer. Yay! One (F. M.) is my 2g-grandfather. All four are sons of Daniel David HARKEY (b Mar 1797 Mecklenburg Co NC, d Jun 1858 Dunklin Co MO) and Mary Ann BANKSTON (b Sep 1801 Wilkes Co GA, d Mar 1879 Dunklin Co MO), who married Dec 1822 in Wilkes Co GA. 1. W. M. = William M. HARKEY, b 1829 GA, d aft 1880 2. J. H. = Jasper H. HARKEY, b 1843, d 1915 MO 3. F. M. = Francis Marion HARKEY (my 2g-grandfather), b 1842 GA, d 27 Jun 1889 MO 4. W. D. = Wilburn David HARKEY, b 1837 GA, d 1919 MO The little history of the HARKEYs of Dunklin Co. MO, by Lora Harkey Scott says: "Then came the Civil War. Grandfather [Wilburn David] enlisted in the Confederate service, Second Missouri Cavalry, under Colonel McCullough. All seven of the Harkey brothers served under Generals Price and Forest. Grandfather said he spent most of his time running here and there trying to keep the Yankees from getting him. He was in the battles of Corinth and Iuka and in a number of skirmishes. At the close of the war he was forced to surrender to the enemy at Wittsburg, Arkansas." Scott names one other brother, Newton, as having served in the same "band" as Wilburn David. Alma Roark Johnson
This seems to be worth reading.
His full name was Joseph Mathias Harkey and he was the first son of Daniel Riley Harkey Sr. I am a decendant of his brother, Daniel Riley Jr.
My grandfather was John Daniel Harkey, son of John S. Harkey and Susannah R. Shaffer Harkey. Would anyone have information on my grandfather's first marriage to Catherine Delilah Vulgamore and their children? Thank you. Donna dhynd@kctc.net
We don't seem to have much list actvity lately ? Guess no one has anything to share? We do seem to have the new Message Boards up and running. I am trying to learn how to manage the one for Harkey. The address now is http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=Surnames.harkey Any message you post to the Harkey board will automatically show up on the list. Go and explore and see what you think. Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com
