Eli Columbus was the youngest son of Levi and Julia Ann Lipe. Eli and his wife, Mary Jeanette Weems, are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Madill, Marshall County, OK. Eli and the mysterious Jacob Harkey were brothers. Jacob was my great, great grandfather. Ironically, Madill is about 14 miles from my hometown of Tishomingo, Johnston Co., OK. It's also 8 miles west of Milburn. Interestingly enough, my family didn't move to Tishomingo until several years after Eli's death. I have been to the Oakland Cemetery and have seen the gravesite. Took pics, but I don't think they turned out well--it started raining about the time we got there! Will see what I can do to get the actual information from the stone if anyone is interested. Uh... Looks like I forgot to add the 1900 OK census data to my preceding post. That's the (little bit) bad news. The GOOD news is that (1) in the meantime, Kathy came through with her grandfather's birthdate and birthplace, and (2) the only SPEAKS family I looked up beyond the index appears to be the one Kathy is looking for! And if one goes by proximity, the family of Eli C. HARKEY may be the one who produced Charlie's mother, James SPEAKS's wife Mary. But I'll leave that for someone else who knows more about the Texas HARKEYs than I do. I ordered the census entries alphabetically by LOCATION. Look down to CHICKASAW NATION for the census entries being discussed. (Kathy, Milburn, OK, your grandfather's birthplace, was in the Chickasaw Nation at the time he was born. In 1907, that part of the nation became Johnston Co.) Alma CANADIAN Co. Robert Speaks Lived in: Union Township, Canadian County, Oklahoma Series: T623 Microfilm: 1335 Book: 2 Page: 149 CHEROKEE Co. Hi Mary-- I would have got this to you before noon, but my computer cut out when I was halfway through, and of course I hadn't saved anything. Here are all the HARKEYs in the 1900 OK census. I got the SPEAKSes from the index and got the data on one household, but they take a lot of time, and so I'm not going to look any further without some idea of TIME (county or nation would be nice, too, if it's available, and it didn't even occur to me that the surname might not be SPEAKS!). Kathy DeCarli----- and List---------- Which of our Harkey's went to Oklahoma. I know in that old Harkey manuscript it talks about who was at the reunion and mentions that the Moses I, Harkey branch of the Levi Harkey branch is represented by Newman Harkey and his wife Rena of Okemah Ok. and their children John Harkey II , and Grandson Toby and their daughter un-named and Huie Harkey and wife and their daughter Laura Ann. I feel like I should know more. I was sent all the Harkeys in Oklahoma for the 1900 census and I've lost it. I know my father used to visit Harkey cousins I think it must have been Newman-- My father joined the army in Holdensville OK. I think he was there visiting kin. Maybe a cousin joined with him> I can't find that out either. Surely we can find the Harkey that was Kathy Speaks DeCarli's great Grandma. Kathy, Do you have any ideas of what years we are talking about? Would your Great Grandfather show on that 1900 census? Just looking at your letter below leads me to believe that your Great Grandfather had to be named Speaks. <G> It is too bad that death certificate didn't list her first name? Maybe someone on the list can help us get this right. I remain your confused list manager <G> Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com
Was someone asking about Ovie Harkey? I found Ovie married to Ausley Lackey? Father was Thomas Mathias Harkey and Lou Dove; I have Thomas and Lou with children Cattie, Tom, Virgie , Ovie and Florence. Can't fill in any more because that is what I know. Thomas M. was a son of Riley and Caroline Harkey. Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com

A new member of our list who has not posted yet, asked me about ELLEN HARKEY who was born in 1832 in Arkansas. This is before any of my Harkey family came to Arkansas. Then our new member , Laurey, said that both Ellen Harkey's parents were born in Virginia. This really surprised me. She married Edward B.F. REAL in 1874. Do any of you know Ellen Harkey? She was over 40 when this marriage took place. Wonder if she was a widow? I thought more about Harkey's in Virginia. We have heard of Conrad Harky who was there in 1755. I didn't know of others. I happened to get a chance to go to a library and I looked at some census index books. I found Harkerder, Conrad, John and Solomon in Wythe Co. 1820? I found Harkerider, Harkier, Harkle and Harkum. On the 1830 census Index I found, Harker, Harkerader Harkley and finally I found ZEBULON HARKEY In Prince WM. Co. I have a Zane, Zilpha and Zelas in my database but no Zebulon. I kept looking at Census of Virginia and found on the 1850 census MARTIN HARKEY in Preston Co. I can't read microfilm and haven't tried on the internet yet to find out who this Martin is. I am curious about all this. Hope one or more of you can shed some light on this. Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com
