Hello again-- I was just rereading the post I sent a few minutes ago, wherein I had written: >> (Not exactly relevant but interesting: I also found >> (at ancestry.com) the marriage of Moses I. HARKEY >> and Rhoda E. WIGGINS on 12 Jan 1868 in Yell Co. AR. ) Now I'm wondering: What if Rhoda's middle name is ELLEN??? Mary, move over. I'm confused, too. (If someone can check the 1860 and 1870 Yell Co. AR censuses, it might answer the question.) Alma
Mary, You're not confused at all. The marriage info you have--that Edward REEL married Mary Polly (WIGGINS) HARKEY on 06 May 1869--matches what I found at <ancestry.com> and at <rootsweb.com> -- that Edward REIL married Mary HARKEY on 6 May 1869 in Yell County, Arkansas. Because of her advanced age at this marriage (Laurey says [Mary] Ellen was born in 1832), I thought it likely that HARKEY was the surname of a previous husband and not her maiden name, and so I wasn't surprised not to find her name in a HARKEY family in the 1850 Yell Co. AR census. Laurey-- According to Mary's information, Wilson Monroe HARKEY was Mary Ellen WIGGINS's first husband. He is found in the 1850 Yell Co. AR census living in the household of his mother, Julia A. (LIPE) HARKEY, the widow of Levi HARKEY: 1850 AR Yell Co. (Chickalah township), hh 10. Census taken 7 Nov 1850. HARKEY, Julia A. 41 NC $500 --Wilson M. 21 NC farmer --Daniel R. 19 NC --Polly M. 18 NC --Moses I. 17 NC farmer --Sandy (m) 14 NC --Catherine 13 NC --Jacob 11 NC --Julia A. 9 NC --John M. 7 NC --Henry C. 5 NC --Levi W. 2 NC (Not exactly relevant but interesting: I also found (at ancestry.com) the marriage of Moses I. HARKEY and Rhoda E. WIGGINS on 12 Jan 1868 in Yell Co. AR. ) There are two WIGGINS families who in 1850 are also living in Chickalah twp, very near Julia A. HARKEY's household: 1850 AR Yell Chickalah twp, hh 20-20 WIGGINS, Adam 48 NC farmer --Cynthia 51 NC --Hardy 23 NC --Mary 21 NC --Adam* 18 NC --Isaac* 15 IL --John M. AR (*) Listed in Chickalah twp. Yell Co. Voters List Sept 1868: Adam WIGGINS, 37, farmer Isaac WIGGINS, 33, farmer 1850 AR Yell Chickalah twp, hh 21-21 WIGGINS, Ransom 46 NC carpenter --David C. 8 AR --Margaret 6 AR (living in hh of Jacob & Martha TUCKER) Laurey-- You didn't say who were [Mary] Ellen's parents, but the only name that matches at all in the above two census entries is Mary, the daughter of Adam WIGGINS. I would venture a guess that this is the Mary WIGGINS who married (abt 1851) Wilson Monroe HARKEY and who later (May 1869) married Edward REIL/REAL/REEL. For one thing, they are the same marriageable age and live near each other. For another, [Mary] Ellen REAL, in the 1900 Benton Co. AR census, says that she was born in AR, and in 1850 AR there is no other WIGGINS household with a Mary or an Ellen. The 1900 census entry is as follows: 1900 AR Benton Co. Hico twp, hh 157-161 REAL, Edward head Aug 1827 72 m27 TN KY TN --Ellen wife Jun 1832 67 m27 2ch/2liv AR VA VA --Licurgus C. son Nov 1873 26 m1 AR TN AR --Cora dau-in-law] Jun 1876 23 m1 0ch/0liv MO MO MO The information in the 1900 census doesn't match exactly the information that is found in the 1850 census or the marriage record. If Adam WIGGINS isn't Ellen's father, that would certainly explain part of the mismatch (birthplaces of Ellen's parents). But it is also possible that Ellen made guesses about her parent's birthplaces, her own age, and the number of years she had been married. (Misreading and/or miscopying during the census-taking and recording is also possible. And it's also possible that someone besides Ellen answered the census-taker's questions and did the guessing.) Does anyone know when Wilson Monroe HARKEY died? I was wondering whether Mary was widowed or divorced. Also, the 1900 census indicates that Mary Ellen WIGGINS and Wilson Monroe HARKEY had a child. Does anyone know who that child is? I've gone on much too long. Is anyone still reading this? Alma Roark Johnson
I am looking for information on my gr-grandmother, Ellen (possibly Mary Ellen) Harkey in Arkansas. I know she married Edward B.F. Real in 1873 and was born in 1832 in Arkansas. Other than that I'm stumped. I've been unable to find any of her family. Any help is appreciated, Laurey I may have found, at <ancestry.com> the marriage you are looking for: Edward REIL Spouse: Mary HARKEY Marriage Date: 6 May 1869 County: Yell State: Arkansas There are lots of Yell Co. HARKEYs (Flo??), so I'll leave the rest to them. Alma Roark Johnson
I have Information on a marriage from Ken Oliver he said that an Edward Reel married Mary Polly Wiggins Harkey. May 06, 1869 She was Widow of Wilson Monroe Harkey. If this isn't right we surely need to correct it. She Married Wilson Monroe Harkey in 1850-51 and He died in 1864. It does appear that although the names sound alike that Edward B.F. Real may be a different man that Edward Reel. As usual I'm confused <G> Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com

Real in Arkansas in 1873. She was born in Arkansas in June, 1832 and lists her parent's birthplace as Virginia for both. Ellen may have also gone by the name Mary Ellen. She gave birth to my grandfather, Licurgus, late in the same year she married I believe, as my grandfather's birthdate in November 1873. Ellen was 41 when she married Edward, and gave birth to two children, Licurgus and another child of which I have no information. Edward was married prior to Ellen and fathered more than a few children by his first wife. After Ellen's death, (shortly after this census I believe) he married a woman named Virginia. The family lived in Arkansas from what I can gather, but did move briefly to San Saba, Texas and appear on the census for that area in 1880 or 1890 before moving back to Arkansas. Thanks for any info you can provide :) Laurey

We have a descendant of Thomas G. and Sam Harkey writing to me. She wants to know more about her Harkey ancestors. Thomas G. Harkey was a son of William Jacob Harkey and Nancy Smith. of San Saba TX. I think other descendants of this line may be on this list. I have only an 1861 birthdate for Thomas G. Harkey and no date for Sam. Sam Harkey must have been born in the 1880's??? Sam Harkey married Verda Ella McAteer and they had a daughter Sammie LaVerne. Who can tell us more about Sam Harkey??????? Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com http://www.scrtc.com/~bird

Hello again-- I know I am having a problem with memory, but am I also having a problem with my computer? Did the HARKEY list get two emails from me this afternoon relating to Kathy Speaks DeCarli's query: the first one (sent 3:32 p.m. PDT), which should have contained the HARKEY and SPEAKS entries in the 1900 OK census but didn't (I forgot to paste it in); and the second one (sent 4:59 p.m. PDT), which actually did have the census info? Both emails had basically the same subject line. I got my copy of the second one from HARKEY-L@rootsweb.com within a minute of sending it, that is, about 5:00 p.m. PDT. Yet two hours later, Mary wrote me a note that indicated that she had received only my first email. Just to be safe, I will copy my second email below. Sorry to be so tedious! Alma From: Junco9@aol.com To: HARKEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HARKEY-L] Oklahoma HARKEYs & SPEAKSes. THIS TIME FOR SURE!!! Uh... Looks like I forgot to add the 1900 OK census data to my preceding post. That's the (little bit) bad news. The GOOD news is that (1) in the meantime, Kathy came through with her grandfather's birthdate and birthplace, and (2) the only SPEAKS family I looked up beyond the index appears to be the one Kathy is looking for! And if one goes by proximity, the family of Eli C. HARKEY may be the one who produced Charlie's mother, James SPEAKS's wife Mary. But I'll leave that for someone else who knows more about the Texas HARKEYs than I do. I ordered the census entries alphabetically by LOCATION. Look down to CHICKASAW NATION for the census entries being discussed. (Kathy, Milburn, OK, your grandfather's birthplace, was in the Chickasaw Nation at the time he was born. In 1907, that part of the nation became Johnston Co.) Alma 1900 OKLAHOMA CENSUS: HARKEY and SPEAKS CANADIAN Co.
