Hi All I am tracing the ancestors of my mother Murial Ada Francis Jones (nee Harding) b 8/04/1909 Lorenco Marques, Portuguese East Africa. Her father was William James Harding b 17/08/1872 in the old British Cape Colony. William had many brothers and sisters including the following Grace H. Harding b 4/1/1875 m ? Lillian E Davis (nee Harding) b 27/7/1877 m Samual Davis b 18/12/1875 one (known) son Samual J Davis James Harding b. 29/07/1882 m ? Albert A Harding b 21/12/1878 m? Note many possible children of the above 2 brothers but still sorting out which is which and their mothers Edith Rose Tunney (nee Harding) b. 10/01/1886 m ? Tunney One (known) child Doris N Tunney Bessie Grunder (nee Harding) b. 17/11/1880 m John Grunder b 3/9/1876 a number of known children my mothers gfather James Harding b. 27/11/1847 Cape Colony m Elizabeth ? b. 27/06/1855 I am trying hard to find which Harding was the first to emigrate from Britain to South Africa and if the first landed in the Cape Colony or Natal Appart from the above I have been in contact with other South African Harding searchers whose Harding families at this stage do not seem to link with mine. One is seeking connections to a Dr William Watten Harding who is said to have come out with the 1820 settlers to South Africa. "DR" Harding was in some way connected to the Sheffield Silver Works.(Sheffield in England). The Cape Colony (now Cape Province of South Africa) where the 1820 settlers landed is difficult eneough to research for ancesters, even if one is resident there let alone from New Zealand. Dr William Watten Harding married a Miss SOPHIA LOUISA BISHOP. Dr Hardings' daughter Adelaide was my correspondent's great-great grandmother. I hope some Harding with established British ancestors having a relative "disapearing" into Africa can pick up on some of these threads.
