do you happen to know about any of the Hardings living in Breesport NY dating around the late 1800's till now??? Names such as Otis Harding, Stanley and Clifford Harding??? Other names found in this tree include Lindsley and Kresge. Thanks for your time. Trisha Beach
do you happen to know anything more about the Harding branch in Ithica NY or more specifically from Breesport NY. I have managed to trace the roots back to about 1880 and i have reports of others dating back to about 1860 i think. Thanks so much for your time Trisha
No hiccup -- just not a lot of messages. It's probably time for everyone to tell what Hardings they are researching. The subscriber list is fluid with folks signing on and off so every couple of months there are a lot of new folks. My first provable Harding is Daniel who was born April 29, 1798, in VA. He married Elizabeth Wilson [b. Oct 30, 1801 VA] on March 21, 1822, in Belmont County, OH. They both died in Logan County, IL. I know of at least 13 children, have nothing on any but one. I have a huge file on a Harding line which has a John Harding b. 1761 who is given as having a son named Daniel b. April 29, 1798, but I cannot find anyone who knows the source of this information. Sure would like it to be proven but I have seen no evidence. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
I am a little puzzled by what appears as a system hicup. I subscribed several weeks ago and this is first message from list. Hi all While my present Harding research is stuck in South Africa (earliest a James Harding b. 27/11/1847 in I believe the "OLD CAPE COLONY") I am trying hard to get a connection between James and the original imigrant to South Afica. I am also working in collaboration several with several other (so far unconnected) Harding lines looking for their English roots. I would appreciate anyone knowing of a Harding family member who "disapeared" into South Africa, particularly to the Old British Cape Colony in the early 1800's. One of my fellow researchers is trying to find a Dr. William Watten Harding who is believe to have immigated to the Cape Colony from England in the 1820's. He was also believed to have some connection with the Sheffield Silver Works. Any claimants to William Watten? I am on the digest mode at present due to high volume coming in on another list Regards and good hunting Cliff Jones 47A Larne Avenue Pakuranga Auckland New Zealand

Hi Bob, Hope all are well and doing fine..including Carol. From reading your letter of the 16th...it sounds as if Carol doesn't have a husband around to do those things that you did for her...as my father did for me when I had none. At least, you are of that generation that KNOWS how to do what you know how to do. The generations that are coming up have very little common sence, much less knowledge of anything to do in life, but play. Now how many of the five grandkids are Carol's? >From the letter I also got that you are over 50 years of age...a 50th wedding anniversary!! I'm going on 20 years...but this is also my third try at marriage...and last...finally got it right! Jason is his son...and Tina is by my first. She has the boy Michael, that is in the picture, and now we have baby Jessica. She is 9months and weights 24lbs. John is self employed...had a hardware store, which Tina has taken control of, and he erects steel buildings. Jason is 18 and works with John and does pole barns also. In fact...Tina closed the store to go help him with a small shed which they built within 3 hours. She is as capable as any man. I, on the other hand, am not strong enough anymore to do such things. In days gone by, I helped John to build three of the houses that we have lived in. Five years ago I developed Rhymatoid arthrities and Fibromyalgia, and had to give up a job as a rural mail carrier. It took me more than half a year to get back on my feet...literally. I could not go back into my craft because I couldn't handle my bundles of mail...much less all the parcels that I would have to load into my car. And get this...I had only one more month to go to reach the 10year point!!! So, now I am on disability and S.S. Now I watch Jessica in the mornings and try to keep house and yard in the afternoons. Then when I am all done with my chores...I log on, only to soon have to get dinner and clean up afterwards....I need to go back to work...maybe then I could get a break??!!! I sent a card and the same chart that I sent to you to Elizabeth, but haven't heard back from her as yet. I hope that she is alright and capable to get around. Oran even sent a note to me that I should get in touch with her...so she much be the right person. In that note that you sent to me...on Thomas Harding...I think that there is some material on him in the booklets that I got from HHH. I have only been a member for a year and half. Also received two years ago booklets. I will gather what I find and get it off to you ASAP, OK?? See...its 4pm and I must get dinner started for my hungry crew!!! Till then.........Dee

My Great Grandfather was George Harding. Unfortunately I don't know much, but what I do know is interesting. He immigrated in the mid 1800's from England. Took a wife and had 3 or 4 children in the Michigan/Wisconsin area. His wife died and he left the children to be raised by someone else. Who I don't know. He then moved to Texas and married Nellie Duhig in Dallas and settled in San Antonio where he died in the early part of this century. I am hoping to find descendants from his first family. Keith Holt
Here's a review of a new book by Dick Eastman in his online genealogical newsletter. While he says the book lists all censuses that have been transcribed, indexed or placed on CD we know that is impossible as new ones are added daily. But the rest of the information might be useful in your research. Disclaimer: This does not constitute an endorsement of the book and is presented for your information only. - The Census Book Bill Dollarhide is a well-known and prolific genealogy author and lecturer. He has just released a new book that will be of interest to most people researching ancestors who lived in the United States. The full title of the book is "The Census Book - A Genealogist's Guide to Federal Facts, Schedules and Indexes." The 183-page book indeed does live up to its full title. It gives detailed descriptions of each census schedule and identifies every known U.S. census index ever published. The Census Book gives a complete tabulation of all U.S. Federal Censuses including non- population census schedules and where the records are located today. It gives many unknown facts and peculiarities about census records. The Census Book also includes maps of the United States as it changed and grew over the years. Looking for ancestors in the 1820 census in the area known today as Wisconsin? A quick look at the map on page 29 shows that present-day Wisconsin was a part of the Michigan Territory in the 1820 census. Therefore the ancestors would be listed in the 1820 census as living in the Michigan Territory. Do you want to know if a particular census return for a state has been indexed? Or, even better, has it been transcribed to CD-ROM? If so, The Census Book will tell you. It lists all the census indexes as well as the Broderbund CD-ROM census CD-ROM disks. According to a reference in the book's preface, "this review spends considerable space correcting errors found in the descriptions of censuses and indexes found on CD-ROM publications." The Census Book apparently does not cover census CD-ROM disks made by companies other than Broderbund, however. The Census Book also contains blank census extraction forms. You can photocopy these forms and then use them to copy and track your ancestor's information as you view these original source documents. Now for the fun part: a CD-ROM of the entire book is included inside the back cover. When you purchase this book, you actually receive two copies: one printed on paper and an exact duplicate in electronic form on CD-ROM. You can search for every word in the book. Since I have many ancestors who lived in Penobscot County, Maine, I did a search on the word "Penobscot." Within seconds, I found every reference to that word contained in the book. I was able to print any or all pages of the book. Before going to the library or a local Family History Center, I can print a copy of the page that describes the microfilm reel that I wish to view, including the Family History Library Call Number. The blank census extraction forms described earlier are also available in the CD-ROM version. The user can print very high- quality blank forms on a laser or inkjet printer. The Census Book CD-ROM uses Adobe Acrobat 4.0 software, an excellent choice. The required software is included for use with Windows 95, 98 or NT. The Census Book CD-ROM should also operate properly on a Macintosh although the Mac software is not included. You can download Adobe Acrobat for Macintosh at no charge from Adobe's website at http://www.adobe.com. Most of the normal Acrobat commands are supported in The Census Book CD-ROM. However, I could not find any method to cut-and-paste data from the book to other Windows applications using the Windows Clipboard. The CD-ROM uses bookmarks as a sort of Table of Contents. It does not seem to have the capability for adding new bookmarks or annotations. "The Census Book - A Genealogist's Guide to Federal Facts, Schedules and Indexes" by William Dollarhide is a valuable addition to the bookshelf of any genealogist doing research in the United States. The availability of "twin copies," one on paper and another on CD-ROM, is an excellent method of meeting everyone's needs and preferences. "The Census Book" is published by Heritage Quest and lists for $24.95 U.S. funds. However, when I looked at Heritage Quest's website, I noticed that the price there was shown as $22.45. Shipping charges will add a bit more to that price. Hi, this may be of help to someone. I have a book callt eh the "GENEALOGY OF THE HARDING FAMILY IN THE EASTERN COUNTIES OF NORTH CAROLINA which was compiled by Rev John R. Harding, D.D., Rector Trinity Church, Utica, NY from back in 1908. His Introduction is as follows: " The eatern counties of North Carolina were first settled by English families, or by those of English descent who, having first established themselves in the more northern colonies, at length emigrated to Carolina. It has been impossible to discover the full facts concerning the first Harding who settled in Beaufort Co., NC, the ancestor of the many who now bear his name. The family tradition is that he came from Providence, Rhode Island, in the early part of the eighteenth century, that he was a ship builder, and that his first residence was on Fork Point, Tar River, near Washington. The compiler of these records has sought in vain for the birthplace, parentage or marriage of this man. THe only clue, in absence of family tradition, is found in a genealogical register of the New England Hardings, compiled by the Rev. Abner Morse, A.M. and published in Boston in 1864. While in this volumn there is no definite link binding the North Carolina family to those of New England, yet the similarity of Christian names in the two branches for several generations offers a probability that both are of the same original stock. These names are STEPHEN, ISRAEL, NATHANIEL, BENJAMIN, and THOMAS. If any dependence is to be placed on this coincidence, and there is strong reason to do so, then it is probable that our first North Carolina ancestor, STEPHEN HARDING, is a descendantof the Stephen Harding who lived in Providence, Rhode Island, 1669, but who, tradition says came originally from Weymouth Landing, Mass. From Mr. Morse's record it is learned that the Hardings were among the earliest English colonists of Massachusetts. There is no exact date known of their arrival, but circumstances indicate that they imigrated with Sir Robert Gorges in 1623, and settled at Weymouth Landing, near Braintree, Mass. Here for half a century was their home, from which they afterward moved to different sections of New England. STEPHEN HARDING, the ancestor of the Eastern North Carolina Hardings had three sons, ISRAEL, BENJAMIN, and STEPHEN. Maybe this might help somebody out or maybe even help me to find the link I need. Good hunting all!!!!! Edward Harding Washington, North Carolina
Hi. I am told to look to Stephen Harding to try to find my ancestors. I have a Thomas D. Harding born possibly to Elijah Harding who was the son of Abiel Harding (from the Revolutionary war). Thomas D. Harding was born in New York, Abiel in Conneticutt. Do you have any of these names in your files? Thanks. karen
Hey did you have any information on Elijah Harding born to Abiel Harding (Revolutionary War guy) in your early Harding Families? Just thought I would check. I am trying to connect a Thomas D. Harding with Elijah, whom I think is his father, but as of yet, can't prove it. Thanks karen
