Ellie...No it's not a news article; it's part of a biographical sketch of my gr-grandfather William A. Handley(brother to James Madison Handley)who was influential in the development of Birmingham, Al.I don't consider myself anything but a novice when it comes to genalogy but your version of things is closer to what I've been told all my lifetime. My great-gr grandfaather John Randolph Handley was born in Burke Co. Ga. ,1812. Burke Co. records have been ravaged by fire;this is where I lose my connection trying to retrace back to Norfolk,Va.This is where Jacks' parents moved to Burke Co.,Ga.from. There seems to be several Handley families in this same area. Richmond Co., WashingtonCo.,BurkeCo.are almost adjacent;and Laurens Co. S.C. isn't far away. Haven't really gotten much further with J.M.but I'll be in B'ham tomorrow he lived there for some time and maybe I can come up with something.
