    2. Ellie Handley
    3. Page 2 Colonel Arthur or William Campbell at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The following is noted from the Draper Manuscripts: Samuel Handley was buried at Winchester and the dates on his tombstone are born - 1748 died - August 4, 1840 It is not certain but is believed that Susannah died in 1836 at the age of 85 years. Professor Erskine Handly says: "You referred to the romantic history of Margaret Handly Parlee. From all I can gather, she was a sister to great grandpa Captain Samuel Handly. They were both born in Pennsylvania. Captain Handly was born in 1748, Margaret in 1753. He died in 1840, she in 1842. Father told me the story, the romantic story of a Handly woman who was married and who was captured by the Indians and kept for three years. I understood she was Captain Handley’s sister, my great-aunt. I have known of the story of her capture and adoption by the Shawnee Indians all my life, long before I ever saw it in print or writing, so I think she was his sister. From all the information I can fix in my mind, Captain Samuel Handley had two brothers; Robert Handley, James Handley, one sister Margaret Handley. This is my best impression that I received in my growing up." Professor Erskine Handley lives at 1835 Pearson Avenue, Birmingham, Alabama. This letter was written by him to Oscar Handly, January 5th, 1930. In this letter he states that his grand-father, John Handly, son of Samuel Handly, married Nancy Cowan. Nancy is a favorite name in the family, as Oscar Handly’s grandfather, William C. Handly (son of Samuel Handly) married Nancy Reeves. Oscar Handly’s oldest daughter is named Nancy for her grandmother and for Mrs. Oscar Handly’s mother. Concerning Margaret Handly Parlee, in the Draper Manuscripts, it is spelled Polly, although the accepted spelling is Parlee or Paulee. Professor Erskine Handly has this to say about the name Erskine: "Dr. Alexander Erskine of Huntsville Alabama and my grandpa, John Handley, were great friends. I think they visited. However, they were great friends, so grandpa named one of his boys Alexander Erskine, and I was named after my Uncle, Alexander Erskine Handley, who was in the Mexican war; went in as private, came out as Captain. John Handley, Dr. Alexander Erskine and Dr. Wallace Estill were friends back in those days. It is impossible to connect the relations of the dead past." According to the Draper Manuscripts, Margaret Handley Parlee (or Paulee) married Michael Erskine, moved to Huntsville Alabama and had a son named Alexander Erskine. In "Prominent Tennesseeans", page 153, there is a sketch of Alexander Erskine of Memphis. His father was Dr. Alexander Erskine, son of Michael Erskine and Margaret Handley Paulee, who died in Huntsville, Alabama in 1857. He gives as reference for the Indian capture Hardesty’s Historical and Geographical Encyclopaedia, page 371.
