People need to realize you cna often follow on line and it doesn't add up. theroy can help or it can hinderyour research. I think Mr. Handley was right and was the reason he never published his papers. He wanted prof. So the people on the list shoud do just that get to work and prove or disprove stories. I know for my self , nowhere does it show my grandmother as a Handley in documentation. Was her mother Elizabeth Hale handley or was she Hattie Ann Bernice Handley child from a railroad man named Covey. All Ihave is the word of her step sisters and an uncle. I am always looking for someone who knows the story. it seems Handleys were closed mouth about family happings like was my grandmother born our of wedlock because Hattie would have bee about 14 when she was born and Hatties mother ran a boarding house for the railroad men buiding the bridge over the missouri. I must find some iype of proff but I keep finding her using the Handley name. but that is a longer story. Ann
Carol, Back in the early 80s, I was exchanging letters with Frances, Mary's sister. At the time, I sent her my line of descent from John Handley who married Mary Harrison. At the time, she did not believe that I could be descended from John Handley, so I sent her detailed proof of the lineage, including a lot of the information which I now see appears in the paper that she and Mary wrote. She wrote back, that she had never seen this information before, and did not know how she missed it when she went to the Clerk's Office in Monroe County, W VA. My point is that some of the information she wrote in the paper, was information that I gave her back then, from the research I had done, and appears to have been carried over to the paper incorrectly. I will go through my file and get back to you later with some corrections, sighting the sources. Nancy, think we need to see the entire compostion.I sent what i had from Richard, which did not give many sources other than the author's.I hope everyone looks at this as another "piece of information" that someone put a lot of time and effort into linking families. It wasn't intended to disrupt any lines-only give more clues to search what we already have... carol On Thu, 2 Sep 1999 23:12:41 EDT Sftrail@aol.com writes: >If I can get written permission from Mary or Richard, maybe we can >upload the >text of this book to the Handley page for on-line research. Ditto, Carol, to what Ann said. Bill
If I can get written permission from Mary or Richard, maybe we can upload the text of this book to the Handley page for on-line research. I'll try to contact Mary. Nancy

Page 2 Colonel Arthur or William Campbell at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The following is noted from the Draper Manuscripts: Samuel Handley was buried at Winchester and the dates on his tombstone are born - 1748 died - August 4, 1840 It is not certain but is believed that Susannah died in 1836 at the age of 85 years. Professor Erskine Handly says: "You referred to the romantic history of Margaret Handly Parlee. From all I can gather, she was a sister to great grandpa Captain Samuel Handly. They were both born in Pennsylvania. Captain Handly was born in 1748, Margaret in 1753. He died in 1840, she in 1842. Father told me the story, the romantic story of a Handly woman who was married and who was captured by the Indians and kept for three years. I understood she was Captain Handleys sister, my great-aunt. I have known of the story of her capture and adoption by the Shawnee Indians all my life, long before I ever saw it in print or writing, so I think she was his sister. From all the information I can fix in my mind, Captain Samuel Handley had two brothers; Robert Handley, James Handley, one sister Margaret Handley. This is my best impression that I received in my growing up." Professor Erskine Handley lives at 1835 Pearson Avenue, Birmingham, Alabama. This letter was written by him to Oscar Handly, January 5th, 1930. In this letter he states that his grand-father, John Handly, son of Samuel Handly, married Nancy Cowan. Nancy is a favorite name in the family, as Oscar Handlys grandfather, William C. Handly (son of Samuel Handly) married Nancy Reeves. Oscar Handlys oldest daughter is named Nancy for her grandmother and for Mrs. Oscar Handlys mother. Concerning Margaret Handly Parlee, in the Draper Manuscripts, it is spelled Polly, although the accepted spelling is Parlee or Paulee. Professor Erskine Handly has this to say about the name Erskine: "Dr. Alexander Erskine of Huntsville Alabama and my grandpa, John Handley, were great friends. I think they visited. However, they were great friends, so grandpa named one of his boys Alexander Erskine, and I was named after my Uncle, Alexander Erskine Handley, who was in the Mexican war; went in as private, came out as Captain. John Handley, Dr. Alexander Erskine and Dr. Wallace Estill were friends back in those days. It is impossible to connect the relations of the dead past." According to the Draper Manuscripts, Margaret Handley Parlee (or Paulee) married Michael Erskine, moved to Huntsville Alabama and had a son named Alexander Erskine. In "Prominent Tennesseeans", page 153, there is a sketch of Alexander Erskine of Memphis. His father was Dr. Alexander Erskine, son of Michael Erskine and Margaret Handley Paulee, who died in Huntsville, Alabama in 1857. He gives as reference for the Indian capture Hardestys Historical and Geographical Encyclopaedia, page 371. I believe it was Ann who put this out? Date: Mon, 17 Nov 1997 04:10:13 -0800 From: Wesley E. Johnson<chipper@mlode.com > To: Handley-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <34703415.72E2@mlode.com> Subject: Handley History Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit AT the request of a few I am printing out some more history. This from a paper by Bertha Lewis Clark. I will preface this by stating I do not know how many of these fact are true and how many are just family stories. My intrest was because of the story about Nancy. My grandmother Alfreda Handley (Covey) Ritchison/Richardson Wood. Daughter of Hattie Bernice Handley of Nebraska City, Nebraska; told me this story in part as she remembered it as a child told to her by ber grandfather. Handley, an old English name, is found given to parishes and hamlets in Checheshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire under various spellings; Hanley, Handly, Handley; and where before the 15th century, the family bore arms in the County of Nottingham. In Ireland as bearer of arms between the 11th and 15th Century, the name appears in Connaught and Roscommon, with the Celtic profix of O'; O'Hanly, O'Hanley. the record books of Pennsylvania and Maryland show the name eeequally popular in early America under the old English spelling ---Hanley, Hamdly, Handley.( I found this intresting , I thought, with out any substance , that they landed in Virginia or maybe New York) The founders of the family in Greenbrier and Monroe counties were John and William Handley, Who came with the Scotch-Irish emigration to Augusta County, Virginia, from Pennsylvania"late from Ireland" , between 1740-1750. John settled on the Cowpasture and his sons John, Jr. and William became residents of Greenbrier Co. in 1790. William (the pioneer) settled in what is now Botetourt( the printing here is hard to read ; spelling could be Betetourt) county on the Staunton River(now the Roanoke River) in 1746, and his sins became residents of Bototourt, and what is now Monroe county, where their namesa appear prior to 1772. William died in 1756, according to family records. his wife's name was probley Margaret, but the date of her death is not known. Their son Samuel Handley stated(Draper MSS.) that there were four children : John, Margaret, Nancy, and Samuel (himself); However family tradition is that there were four older sons, these being Archibald, William Jr., James and Alexander. AS records of Botetourt show the bears of these names closely associated with each other, and as names carry down in the family, the tradition is belived to be correct. So, the line has been constructed as follows for the children of William, pioneer: 1. Archibald(b. ; d. 1796) he owned land with John on Indian Creek, now Monroe County, 1774, record of surveys in Botetourt prove; he is listed with John , and James under Greenbrier, in the First U.S. Census 1782=85; was a member of grand jury and surveyor, 1781, and road inspector, 1782, in Monroe when it was still a part of Greenbrier. He died 1796; his wife's name was Jean. their children wereSarah (m.Wm. Shanks, 1780); Grisedda; Ann; Maryn Miller, 1803; James, (b 1760;m Isabel.) Archibalds's will was witnessed by John handley and Michael Erskine; estate settled by John Hnadley and Samuel Clark--All of Monroe. Will recorded at Lewisburg. 2. William, Jr.--Many records appear in Botetourt( I think this is now right spelling. Looks like the typest cleaned her letters.) and Mmontgomrty Counties under his Name until 1785 and later; he served in the Revelution. No record of marriage found. 3. James Handley, (called here James, Sr. as there laterJames's) Botetourt and Monroe (under Greenbrier records) show his close association with Archibald and John. (see Archibalds's sketch above); became also a prominent man of monroe; processioned lands in his district with Jno. Handley and John Byrnside 1795; was a justice of Maonroe, and helped in the formation of Maonroe from Greenbrier, 1799. No record of marriage found. to be continued: all dates are the work of Berta Lewis Clark Date of this article is not known and is offered here because of the stories it holds which will come soon. I did not want to take anything out of context. There seems to be a slight discrepancy between this item and the items given above from the "CAlender of the Tennessee and the King's Mountian Papers" The explaination is that there are two Samuel Handleys , father and son. Both served in the Virginia Militia, Revolutinary WAr, though Capt. Samuel Handley, Jr. was the most prominent due to his indian warfare and captivity- and the exact age of neither is known. Taking into consideration the fact that statements by different people rarely agree, and that the constant repetition of family Given names, a typical habit of our ancestors, causes endless confusion to research on families, this is certainly the most natural conclusion to draw--. in view of fanily papers, court records and other documents. the complier (B.L C.) 1842,July 4DD37 - ------------------------------ End of HANDLEY-D Digest V97 Issue #44 ************************************* (Source of factual information: McClung Collection of Early History pertaining to the country around Knoxville, and the Draper Manuscripts, both from the Lawson-McGee Library, Knoxville) William Handly, of Ireland - Emigrant John Margaret Nancy Samuel (direct ancestor of Oscar Handly, Knoxville, Tennessee); born in Virginia, September 17, 1751. In 1774, he left home to fight the Indians under the command of either Colonel William Fleming or of Captain Evan Shelby, in a battle at the junction of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers. He was a sergeant in the Battle of the Cow Pens under Colonel Morgan. He was a private in the Battle of Kings Mountain under Colonel William Campbell. In 1781, he joined the regiment of Colonel Sevier. After the close of the war of the Revolution, he married Susannah Cowan, a daughter of a Whig named Robert Cowan, who lived in South Carolina. He had met Susannah one night during the war when his company had been chasing Tories and spent a night in Mr. Cowans home. They settled in East Tennessee (North Carolina at that time). In 1797, he moved to Little River, probably in Sevier County, and settled at Bakers Creek. In 1809 they moved to Franklin County. (He always tried to stay on the frontier.) Margaret, Samuels sister, married John Polly in 1774. Polly and their infant son were killed by Indians and Margaret was held captive by the Indians for five years, when she escaped. She later married Michael Erskine, in the Greenbriar section. Her son Alex Erskine moved to Huntsville, Alabama. (Sister Nancy was taken captive by Indians in 1774 and held for five years.) In 1792 Samuel was captured by the Indians at Crab Orchard and held for several months. Susannah Cowan Handly, wife of Samuel, died in Franklin County in 1834. The Draper Manuscripts report that Captain Handly was the man who stabbed the Indian with whom Alexander Moore was struggling, but this has been disputed. The James Handley, ID to be the father, may have been a brother to John & William and stay in SC, NC, (Old Washington Co.,) and what is east Tenn today. We have a James Handley in east Tenn., 1807 who witness a land buy, John Sevier and John Handley, it may be possible this John (21yrs old) could be the son of Samuel C. Handley. Samuel had no son named James Handley as far as I know. See below: Also; what records do we have to show there were only 3 that came over.? Do we know what ship they came over in? Also; in early Greene Co., Tenn., records there was a William & Thomas Handley that were Tailors, in the county. Didn't you point out John & William were weavers by trade? The other thing I would like to point-out Mark Handley, would be the right age to be another brother? Was this John Handley, the son of Samuel Carroll Handley.???? Washington Co. Dear List, There are sposed to be 14 posts of the info i have. Some is overlapped to provide continuity to the previous...It had to be broken up as there were 19 typed pages and the L-list would not accept attachments. It does create some problems-- PLEASE....PLEASE read to the last post before you start e-mailing me. I will try and put a descendant line together from this so we can see the differences..this is great information as i know Mary Mortimeyer was searching the Draper papers back when Randall Handley did his book and told him he hadn't proved any connections. I do NOT have her book, this much was sent to me by her friend,R Hopkins,,.. carol

Alexander Handley died in early l832. His younger son Alexander Handley Jr.. was appointed administrator of his estate January 25, l832. He and his securities, John Hardin, Thomas Carter, Henry Purdy and James Handley, posted $3,000 bond. The inventory of Alexander's estate was made February 4, l832 and listed five slaves: Milly, $300 value, girl Gena - $l50, girl Mana - $l50, boy Henry - $l25, boy Davie - $l00. Also, listed were yoke steers, five cows, four steers, three horses and three hogs. A sale was held April 23, l832, to settle up Alexander's estate. Among the buyers were his wife, his sons, his son-in-law, and brothers-in-law John Hardin (g) and Henry Purdy. According to McElroy records, Sarah, widow of Alexander, would have been close to age 65 when Alexander died. No record could be found of a dower for Sarah. Perhaps she continued to live on the home place with Alexander, her son. Tax records show that in l835, Alexander had l30 a. on Rolling Fork River. Alexander Handley and Sarah McElroy had three children: 1. James Handley, born in l794, married Sarah Cleaver and moved to Missouri in l857. There is more on James in the next chapter. 2. Mary Ann Handley, born c. l803, married Thomas Carter April l5, l8l9 in Washington County, Kentucky. They had ll6 a. on Rolling Fork. The l850 Marion County, Kentucky, census showed the following children: Sarah Carter, William Carter, Margaret Carter, Elizabeth Carter and Louisa Carter. 3. Alexander Handley, born March 22, 1807, married Lettitia Cleaver and died September 4, 1859. They had 5 Children. They were; a. James A. Handley, married Susan McClure, sister of Ann Elizabeth McClure, who married Samuel Handley, son of James Handley and Sarah Cleaver. b. Daniel S. Handley, married Mary Jane Upton. c. Louisa Ann Handley married James Bowman. d. Isaac C. Handley, married Susan A. Palmer. e. William R. Handley, married the sister of Governor John Ireland of Texas.
