    1. Re: {not a subscriber} Re: [HANDLEY-L] William Handley...
    2. Mike, did you ever get to your files? No hurry... Nancy << I will be looking at my file this labor day weekend and get back with you and everyone. Dr. Harry Handley of Lewisburg, W VA, who kept a ton of files on Handley history, was working on the ancestors of William Handley, who came from New Castle County, PA/DE to Virginia. He had some real good theories and leads, but was unable to prove them. A lot of what is written on those ancestors in "post-1 (test)," were among the theories he had. The challenge now, is to find evidence that will prove them. Dr. Handley's sister, Birdie Handley Musser and I use to stay in touch when she was living, through visits to see her, letters and phone calls. She wanted so much to see her brother's theories proven, as he worked many, many years on the Handley ancestry and wanted so much to carry the line back overseas, but did not get that far. Hopefully, this will happen. Mike >>

    1. Re: [HANDLEY-L] Capt Samuel Handley
    2. Forwarded from djackson@InfoAve.Net: Ellie, I looked at NC records for Handleys during the Revolution. I found Capt. Samuel Handly, born in NC and was one of the King's Mountain Men. I also found Joseph Handley of Granville Co. NC who received a voucher for being in the Continental Line payments were made in 1792 that were due in 1783. Also William Handley, Shephards Co. enlised 28 July 1777 served for 3 years in the 10th Regt. of Abraham Shephard. Also the roll of Capt. Benjamin Coleman's Co. 2nd. NC Battalion commanded by Col. John Patton, White Plains, 9 Sept 1778 William Handley, Pvt. 28 July 1777 3 years service. The returns of the 2nd NC Battalion reinlisted William Handley 12 March 1779 in Capt. Colemans Co. In Virginia records I found that in the Lunenburg Co. VA ORder book 1748-1752, April Court 1751. William Handly petitioner agst. Richard Yarbro, petitioner to recover 2 pounds 3 shillings in debt. IN the Cumberland Parish of Lunenburg Co. VA Vestry Book William Handly denyed by the processioners on 10 March 1768. Also there was James Handly who was exempted from payment of parish levies for the future 1751 in Cumberland Parish, Lueneburg Co. VA. In Northumberland Co. VA John Hanley signes an oath to the Commonwealth of England 13 April 1652. Does anyone know about these Handleys? 1. [HANDLEY-L] DAR Handley Data
    2. Hi, all: Ancestry.Com has info from the DAR Lineage Books on-line for free for a few days. Here are a few of the 37 references to "Handley". You might want to browse the info yourself, or for variations of the spelling, at http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/search/3174.htm What might be interesting are the people with "Handley" as a middle or first name. Perhaps this indicates an Handley ancestor??? Like John HANDLEY Bushnell (1744-1828) who married, in 1768, Sarah Willard (1751-1824). Could "Bushnell" be the married name of a sister of John and William HANDLEY? 3. Thank you Carol Ann for all that wonderful Handley information. I will have to put the families onto family group sheets in order for it to make sense to me. I have been able to document my ancestor, George Handley, son of James. When he left Butler Co with his wife Margaret, they had several small children. I have a copy ofhis certificate of land ownership in Henry Co IN, 1820, signed by Pres. James Buchanan. I found he and his family in the 1830 IN census, but in 1840, Margaret was living alone in Decatur Co IN. In 1860 she was living with their son Robert and his wife Nancy and children, and his son Evan James Handley - my ancestor - was living nearby. My thinking is that George had died. However, I have never found any other siblings to my ancestor Evan, which might explain the reasoning they went West. I was told by a genealogist in Decatur Co that Margaret and George were also buried in the same cemetery as Robert and Nancy, but I have not as yet been able to travel there to see for myself. Again - thank you for putting this on the Handley Line.

    3. Ellie...No it's not a news article; it's part of a biographical sketch of my gr-grandfather William A. Handley(brother to James Madison Handley)who was influential in the development of Birmingham, Al.I don't consider myself anything but a novice when it comes to genalogy but your version of things is closer to what I've been told all my lifetime. My great-gr grandfaather John Randolph Handley was born in Burke Co. Ga. ,1812. Burke Co. records have been ravaged by fire;this is where I lose my connection trying to retrace back to Norfolk,Va.This is where Jacks' parents moved to Burke Co.,Ga.from. There seems to be several Handley families in this same area. Richmond Co., WashingtonCo.,BurkeCo.are almost adjacent;and Laurens Co. S.C. isn't far away. Haven't really gotten much further with J.M.but I'll be in B'ham tomorrow he lived there for some time and maybe I can come up with something. 2. Carol, Thanks, also, from this relative newcomer to the Handley line. Your generous work has helped answer a lot of my questions as to where all the Handley people and names that were being tossed about on rootsweb were coming from. Your pages of information sure beat this alphabetical name & date chart I was trying to make! Years ago when I was researching the old fashioned way on another family associated with the Handleys, I seem to remember mention of a Handley Library in Winchester, VA. Has anyone checked there for a family file or background of the library name? I am unfamiliar with how to access any of this information on the net. Perhaps those of you who do know how, might want to pursue this avenue. Donna Grass Grassrd@aol.com

    2. What is involved in proving genealogy theories? New primary documents? Does anyone have a bibliography of documented resources so others could tell if their resources are new ones? Speaking of resources and of Dr. Handley, I came across a letter from his wife the other day, where she told me Ann Handley George was not connected to the Greenbrier Co Handley family. So even very reliable resources sometimes make mistakes. Nancy Sween

Nancy was right, during the day, I reply from my e-mail address at work, causing it not to recognize me. I will be looking at my file this labor day weekend and get back with you and everyone.
