    3. Joe could you tell me if there is a Frieda Handley in that book as the child of Hattie Bernice Handley? The father may have been A Covey.I am trying to prove weather Freida was the child of Hattie or the child of Elizabeth Hale Handley. 1. [HANDLEY-L] Miss any earlier postings?
    2. Please remember that our Handley, Hanley, Handly, Hanly email list is archived in at least two places. You can search it through Rootsweb (by keywords) or through eScribe.com (all messages by date). Rootsweb's archive goes back several years, and that helped a lot recently in finding the Bertha Clark papers from 1997. You might find an early posting on a line of the family that's been hard to track down. eScribe is also asking any of us who use the archives to take a short survey on the site at: http://www.escribe.com/genealogy/handley/ so they get a better idea of who uses their site. Thanks. Nancy

    2. Are you sitting down??? Only 2 years late, Ann Johnson's transcription of Betsy Clark's Handley Family Paper is now accessable from our Handley web site. I found the right Rootsweb search while updating the "Interactive Genealogy" web page tonight, and set up a page, under "books and manuscripts", that links to Ann's archived messages at Rootsweb. They're at: http://members.aol.com/Sftrail/handley/clark97.htm Thanks, Ann! 1. [HANDLEY-L] Our Hanley's from Ireland to Scotland
    2. Michael & Carolyn McInnes
    3. Hi List, I have now, at last, found out a bit about our Hanley's so here is what I know about them. William Hanley was born in Roscommon, Ireland c 1832. He married a Hannah & I believe she could well have been Hannah McConway of Donegal. My reason for believing I have the right Hannah here is that I have them in the 1881 census in Glasgow (which is where they emigrated too) & all the children in the census line up with what is in the IGI. I knew about a couple of them & the IGI gave me 2 more that had probably died. The mother was any of the following in all cases, Hannah McConway, Hannah Conway, Hannah McConnoway, & for only one Ann Conway. All of the children are in the census bar the two whop I think died. I also found a marriage for William Hanley & Hannah Conway 17 Dec 1854 in Glasgow. Hannah McConway, in the IGI was born to Daniel McConway & Isabella Tonner 17 Dec 1832. The date is out but only by 2-3 years. they were married in Donegal in 1830. I don't have any proof as yet but I do feel confident about them. McConway is not a common name like Conway. I am yet to get the certificate for William Hanley & Hannah McConways marriage but I intend to do it. So we have; William Hanley c 1832 IRE married Hannah McConway c 1832 IRE 1854 in Glasgow, SCT CHILDREN William Hanley 15 August 1857, Central Dist, Glasgow Annie Hanley 18 December 1859, " " " (census) Sarah Hanley 1861 " " " James Hanley 25 March 1866 " " " (census) Hannah Hanley 19 March 1869 High Church " Mary Hanley 27 May 1871 " " " (census) William Hanley 25 June 1874 " " " (census) I believe the first William died as there was another son named William 17 yrs later. This is our Line. William Hanley b 1874 married Martha McNeilage b 1877 (not in the IGI but in the census with all her family) CHILDREN Martha Hanley DOB unknown Hannah Hanley c 1897 Glasgow (out line) William Hanley (know as Sonny) c1900 - 1943 Jean Hanley (Jeannie) DOB unknown Grace Hanley DOB unknown Lily Hanley DOB unknown Emily Hanley DOB unknown I only know about these children from Hannah's son & daughter & that is from memory only. There was definitely only one boy & he died in an accident, at the age of 43. I have a photo of his headstone. Martha is reported to be the eldest. Hannah was sent photos of Jeannie, Emily & Lily & I suspect there is one of Martha & Grace but it is unnamed. There is also one of a Ruby. One of Hannah daughters was named Ruby, maybe after this Ruby. Hannah Hanley came out to Australia & married Charles Frederick McInnes Sept 30 1922 at the Manse of the Preston Presbyterian Church. As Charles was from Manangatang up near Mildura, I suspect that they married on the way back to the farm after picking her up from the ship. Well that is all I have for the moment so I hope you see something you recognise. I do also have details of the McNeilage family if it is of interest to you. Naturally I have info on the McInnes's too. Carolyn McInnes

    1. [HANDLEY-L] Handley's from Poland?!?!
    2. handleym
    3. My name is Melissa Handley and I am trying to figure out a good way to trace my family history on my father's side. The problem is that nearly everyone is dead, so I don't have a living history now. Basically, the story goes like this... My grandfather and all his brothers (and there might have been some sisters, too) and their parents immigrated here from Poland in the early 1900s. (I know that you're saying to yourself that Handley is hardly a Polish name...) As the story goes, each of the brothers chose a new name when they arrived in the US to "blend in more". From what I understand, there were at least 2 who chose Handley. My dad says that their original name was Warshawski (I'm not sure of the spelling). I'm not sure where the family started out, but my grandfather ended up on the West Coast in Washington and Oregon. As far as I know, I haven't ever met any great uncles or aunts on my dad's side, so they may very well have not moved West. And my grandfather die! d in the 1970s. So, my question to all of you: Is there anyone out there who has a family history similar to mine? Does this story sound familiar to anybody? Any thoughts, ideas, questions, comments, concerns, etc. are welcomed. Thanks for your help!

    3. Hello Dominique, since writing to you on the 8th of Jan I have been, for the first time, to an LDS centre & done some research. I found our William Hanley, at the age of 7 living with his parents, William Hanley & Hannah Hanley (nee Conway/McConway/McConnoway) in the 1881 census for Glasgow. The address is 13 Weaver St Glasgow. William Hanley 1st is aged 49 which makes his DOB around 1832 in Roscommon IRE & Hannah was aged 46 so born around 1835 in Donegal IRE. I have found a marriage with the right names, William Hanlan & Hannah Conway on 17th Dec 1854 in Glasgow. Their children on the census are..... Annie 21 (est 1859) (in the IGI to William Handley & Ann Conway). Ellen 17 (est 1864) (in the IGI to William Hanley & Hannah McConway). James 15 (est 1866) (in the IGI to William Handley & Hannah Conway). Mary 10 (est 1871) (in the IGI to William Hanlay & Hannah McConnoway). William 7 (est 1874) (in the IGI to William Hanley & Hannah McConnoway). There were also 2 other children that I found in the IGI...... William born 1857 (in the IGI to William Handley & Hannah McConway). Hannah born 1869 (in the IGI to William Hanlay & Hannah McConoway). There may have been another before William (1857) which would account for the gap between marriage & children. I have also found a Hannah McConway born on the 17th Dec 1832 to Daniel McConway & Isabella Tonner in Donegal Ireland. They were married in 1830 in Donegal. William Hanley (1874) went on to become a French Polisher & married Hannah McNeilage who was born in Glasgow in 1877 to John & Martha McNeilage. William & Hannah ( I think it is rather funny that he, with his fathers name, married a woman with his mothers name)had approx 5 children. I can't know for sure as I can't get to Scotland, but Hannah Hanley was born in 1897 (the one who came here). The presumption about her siblings comes from old photos that her daughter has. There is a photo of Jeannie, Lily & Emily & a photo of a grave with the headstone for William Hanley born 1900 died 1943 & his father standing next to it. Sonny is a name that was known to be her brother ? Maybe there is a link here !!! Alexander & Francis may be the children of William Hanley's (1832) brothers (who ever they were). Do you know who their parents were ? I haven't been able to locate any real possibilities for Williams parents but they may be the common thread here. I will go back to LDS & see what I can find. Do you have any old photos ? Maybe we have photos of the same people. I have many old photos with no names. hope to hear from you VERY soon <grin> Carolyn McInnes

    1. [HANDLEY-L] HANDLEY in England
    2. Chris Bartlett
    3. Hello everyone, I have been on this list for a while and thought it was about time I posted my interests. My main interests are HANDLEYs from the Shropshire/Worcester border area in the 1750 to 1880 period. I am particularly interested in further information on Thomas HANDLEY and Ann GREEN married in Mamble 20 May 1792 which appears to be a submission to the IGI We think Thomas was born 4 May 1766 in Burford to William and Ann. There are many HANDLEYS in this area and the records go back to the 1500's but we can not connect two lines even though they live in the same small village at the same time. My family who descend from Thomas and Ann are William HANDLEY who had 9 children in Knighton upon Teme where he was the schoolmaster and a farmer and also seemed to dabble in legal matters and medicine. He used to "bleed" people. I think this relates to the practice of cleansing wounds using leaches. The children of William went many ways. Edmund and Alfred to London where in the 1881 census Edmund was a successful draper and Alfred a Drapers assistant. Henry bought back the family farm Tan House in Knighton upon Teme. William Edwin was a carpenter in St Martins in Herefordshire and Helen married James MEAKIN and moved to a farm in Australia ( My line). If anyone knows anything else about this family or are descendants I would really appreciate hearing from you. regards Chris Bartlett in Auckland New Zealand.
