I am confused as to this info about LINDY-are there 2. She died 1800, she married 1822 ?? POLLY married JOHN GILL2. iv. RUTH (MARGARET ). v. JOHN2. vi. LINDY2. Born in 1790 in MONROE CO. VA. LINDY died in MONROE CO. VA. in 1800; she was 10. On 22 Jul 1822 when LINDY was 32, she married JOHN WIKLE2, son of GEORGE WIKLE, in MONROE CO. VA. JOHN died bef 1851. vii. SAMUEL2. SAMUEL died in 1795. carol
Fordyce I think I am descended from that William Handley (husband of Margaret Christie) thru his great granddaughter Rebecca Handley (from Ancestry.com--Ancestry World Tree-Search Results), that is, if this is the Rebecca Handley, born in South Carolina between 1880-1890 and married Matthew Dickey (in York Co., SC) about 1800, moved to Franklin Co., TN, where Matthew D. died, and she then married Sharp Dougan about 1812. I have independently come up with the given names of William and John as her father and grandfather. I will appreciate any help with regard to proving the above. If we share this line, I'll be more than glad to share what I have with you. Bill
Fordyce, This would definitely solve one of the long time questions of proving Margaret Christie was the wife of William Handley. I have been looking for the proof of this marriage for more than 25 years. Would you please share your resources of proof with us all? Dear List , If you read the history of Scotland , they had a problem with the british pushing them off there land and many went to Ireland . I think is is the british due that the one who went or were sent to Australia ruined the wool industry of scotland that the british had established and the reason they wanted large tracks of land to run sheep on. It is and interesting story but I cant seem to remember what the called that time . Both The Miseries and The Troubles come to mind but which is Scots and which is Irish, Sorry but a senior hour seems to have struck. Dear Kristine, My Grandmother is not mentioned in the Randall J. Handley book either. I know she was part of this family because even though there is not birth certificate, her Stepsisters and stepbrothers recognized her as a part of her family. I am not even sure who her father was even though she thought he was a Covey and worked on building the first bridge over the Missouri at Nebraska City. Randall has listed her grandfather John Mason Handley & her mother Hattie Bernice Handley. though One or two members of the family dod not recognize her. I've just read through Randall J. Handley's on-line manuscript and noticed that a very important Handley is missing (important because it is my ancestor!) Using his numbering Ha-111 Archibald Handley had a daughter Elizabeth on 28 Dec 1829 resulting in his wife's(Elizabeth Barbee) death on 8 Jan 1830. She was raised by her aunt, Ha-15 Margaret Campbell. Elizabeth returned the favor because Margaret lived with Elizabeth and her husband David Henderson Bell until her death in 1861. Hi list, I thought I would put my piece about where the Hanley's came from. You will find them listed in just about all areas of the UK. Travel between Ireland & Scotland or England was just like going to the next state. There are no immigration records because it wasn't considered immigrating. I traced my Hanley connection from Australia back to Scotland. It was only a recent move to here, (1920's) in a genealogists time frame, but knowing it is an Irish Name, predominantly from the Roscommon area, I looked back at the Scottish census to find my William Hanley's father. Sure enough in the 1881 census. There was William as a small boy with all his sisters & brothers & his father stated his place of birth as Roscommon in c 1832. Depending on what time frame you are looking at, if you search a census for Yorkshire or any where else you will eventually find most of them came over from Ireland at some point. I have the British 1881 census & the 1851 census on CD so if you have anyone you want me to look for I will do so. Please remember that the 1851 only covers Devon, Norfolk & Warwick. If you have Hanley's that you have traced to other areas of the British Isles then you will need to look up the 1851 census on Microfiche. I hope this helps. Carolyn McInnes
