Hy ya'll, Just thought I would throw this into the mix.... taken from the history of Jefferson Co, Alabama Printed 1887 "Three sons John,James, and William descended from this lordly line, emigrated to America during the colonial period. Of these two settled in Virginia and the other in Pennsylvania. One of those who had made a home in the Old Dominion soon returned to Ireland and located in the city of Dublin. From this ancestor descended the Hon.John Handley, now a most distinguished jurist of Pennsylvania, resident of Scranton, in that state. The Handleys who had originally located in Pennsylvania subsequently removed to Virginia and made a home near Fairfax Courthouse, a descend- ent of whom, Col. William Handley, served most gallantly on the staff of Gen. John C. Breckenridge, during the War Between the States. One of the Handley brothers who came originally to Virginia located near Norfolk, and from him was descended...." my line. I don't have my Handley info in from of me but I remember a John Hanley in Colonial Virginia before 1740. Not all the Handleys in the US descend from William and John of Pennsylvania. We know that Mark Handley was already in Craven Co. NC before 1740. Who do think this 3rd brother mite be?? I am told Samuel Handley, 1751, was the only one of the West Va./PA who went south NC/TN to live, I dought that! Living east tenn, old washington Co. all during the same time frame were: Samuel, James, William, John and a William & Thomas Handley's. on one is going to tell me these Handley are not related.? As far as I know none of these has turned out to belong to Mark Handley, family? I have a William and John in there some place, but I keep running into these West VA., Handley's who say only Samuel went south. The other question I have is Samuel Handley, Jr. Capt. capture by the Indians. Someone has presumed this to be the son of Samuel Sr. Because both are listed in the Rev War together? The brith date I have on Samuel Jr. he would be to young to fight in the Rev. War.??? If any of you have any better information than I do, please let me know. Ellie "Wesley E. I have found this account of a Moses Handley in 1700's in Virginia. The furthest my line goes back for now is Moses Handley b. 1788 place unknown d. 1871 in Harrison County, OH. He married Nancy Bell in 1808 in Jefferson County, Ohio. They lived in Greene Township, Harrison County, Ohio. Nancy (Bell) Handley b. 1787 and d. 1850 in Harrison County, Ohio. Moses remarried in 1861 to Sarah Ann Mason b. 1817 d. 1900 Hopedale, Harrison County, Ohio. All three are buried in the Greenwood Graveyard of Green Township, Harrison County, Ohio. I have to public records that give the father of Moses Handley but speculation is that his father was William Handley of Harrison County, Ohio. I can't not connect this Moses Handley of Virginia to mine but he might be related to William and John from the 1700's. I am related through John Handley & Elizabeth Hall and John Handley & Elizabeth Hale. Just wondering. Ann
Does anyone on the list know IF there was a third brother who came to America in the 1700's, in addition to William and John? In talking to my cousin, she said that both her father and his sister said they were told there were 3. We are having this discussion, because Gov. Harold Handley, of IN, looks like a twin to her father, but yet Harold's line does not connect to ours. The genealogy done for him gives William as the last known ancestor, born in England. His son, is James Handley of Loudon VA,(B 11-4-1794) then John of Knox Co OH,(born 11-11-1819) then Henry Clayton of Crownpoint, IN(born 6-1-1876). Any info???

Hi, I've been monitoring this list for some time but have not entered because I'm not sure I have anything to add. As a newcomer, I'm in hopes someone can help me. All I have is a very long line of ancestors for Alese/Alice/Elsie Handley who was born in 1752. I am unsure where she was born or where she married Henry Winegardner Sr., I'm guessing Loudoun Co, VA. as several of their children were born in Loudoun Co. before the large family moved to Ohio. Hannah (Anna), the oldest daughter of Henry & Alese (b. abt 1774 d. 1846) was married to a Daniel Handley. They reportedly had 12 children but their names are not among my records. Hannah(Anna) Handley is buried next to Alese Handley Winegardner in the Poplar Forks Cemetery, Gratiot, Ohio. I would appreciate any information I can get on Alese Handley, my ancestor. Names associated with this family are Jordan, Oxley, Jacques, Hoover, Barb, Drum, Rhodes, Scofield, and others. Thank you for checking your records for me. Donna Grass Grassrd@aol.com
Well, there is Bobbie's John HANDLEY, Sr., born 1740 in NC. Did we ever figure out where that John fits? Maybe a 3rd line??? Maybe not??? Nancy
