Jackie, It was quite common for travellers to use ox-teams. What is interesting is that the people could walk faster on foot than the ox-teams pulling the wagons. This is part of the reason the Willie and Martin Handcart companies got into such trouble. There were ox-teams assigned to travel with both these Handcart companies. However, the people KNEW winter was upon them and travelled as quickly as they could and very rapidly outpaced the wagons.
