First thing is organize what you have? Do you have the information on family group sheets and pedigree charts? You need to do this in order to get further back. [Forgive me for asking such basic questions, but your message seems to indicate you are almost starting from scratch.} Next thing you should do is check Ancestral File at your local Family History Center (FHC). If these families were members of the church, there is a very good chance their records are in this database. I presume you have done census record checks to get names, approximate dates and places of birth? It helps to know where these Baileys came from. I have Baileys in northwest Georgia, but they went to Colorado about 1880 with a group of Mormons from Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee and settled in the San Luis Valley. You could check early LDS church records for Texas. They would be found under the name of the mission, since the early branches would have been part of the mission district before stakes were organized. Texas might have been part of the Southern States mission. However, you could probably find the record by searching the Family History Library catalog under the county in Texas, then seeing what LDS church records there are. A lot of early branch records have been microfilmed. These have information on birth dates and places, names of parents, dates of LDS baptism, etc. I have looked at early records for Colorado (late 1800s/early 1900s), and found them under the county. They were under the Western States Mission at that time. ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: [HANDCART-L] Surnames: BAILEY, HARRISON, KEMP, HATCHET, MEN Author: Elaine <elainec@stinger.net> Date: 8/10/98 10:17 AM Hello all! I am forwarding this for T. Whistler who is having a little trouble posting to the list. If you would like to get in touch with her please use her e-mail address below. Have a great week! Elaine T. Whistler wrote: I am new to genealogy and need lots of help!! After reading the helpful messages on this newsgroup, I know this is the place to get it!! I believe my BAILEY ancestors were in the group that was the first Mormon settlement in TX just south (?) of Dallas/Ft. Worth. At least a member of the church from that area is related to the Pres. Wm. Henry and Benj. Harrison and so am I. He cannot find his records and I am getting desperate! I need to research ALL of these names: BAILEY, HARRISON, KEMP, HATCHET, MENGE, and LUCHAU. Except possibly the first one, I don't know that any of the others were members of the Church. I have some info on Luchau, but very little on any of the others. If you can help, please email me at talonwhisler@itlnet.net. Thank you very much. T.
