Please be advised that the lists of handcart companies on the Pioneer Heritage CD-ROM have many errors. The lists are published in the DUP series. Many descendants "added" their ancestors to the list who DID NOT belong there. For example, the list for the 9th HC Company lists Isaac C. Morris and Sarah Henderson, his wife. He emigrated in 1853 and she did in 1852. They had a son who married a daughter of Daniel Robison, captain of the 9th HC company. I've done extensive research on this company if anyone else wants a copy of my list. The most reliable starting point are the lists published in the back of "Handcarts to Zion" by Leroy & Ann Hafen. This is available in paperback at the Church Museum of History & Art in SLC and at Deseret Book stores. This lists came from the official lists turned in by HC company captains and are part of the Journal History of the church. While some of the company lists are sketchy (I think the 6th has only a handful of names), I don't believe there are any people ON these lists who don't belong there. They should be used as a starting point for research. If you have ancestors NOT on these lists who ARE on the DUP list, I would not accept that as a fact without thorough research. I've come across various biographical/autobiographical sketches for one woman on the DUP list for the 9th HC company, and sometimes it says she came in 1860 with "a handcart company" and in other places they came with a wagon company. I think it was the latter. As a further note, there are MANY errors in Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah. I was advised early on in my research that this is not a very reliable source. For instance, according to PPMU, one of Daniel Robison's brothers came with the 10th HC company, although he is on the official list for the 9th! In fact, Daniel's parents and all of his brothers and sisters and their families (with one exception), emigrated with the 9th. The exception was a sister whose husband could afford a wagon, but they all came out from Pennsylvania to Florence together. Lyndia Carter of Springville, Utah is in the process of publishing her book on the Willie & Martin handcart companies. I haven't talked to her in a while, so I don't know where or when it will be published, but I expect it will be available in SLC area bookstores when it is. [I won't put her address and phone number here without asking her for permission first.] My annotated list of the 9th company is attached as a word file.
