Hi, My name is Bill Bodett and I have been a subscriber for a number of months, but this is my first message to the list. I don't have any pioneer ancestors as I am the only member of my family to join the LDS church (that I am aware of). However, my wife's family dates back to the early days of the church in New York, Ohio, Missouri and Illinois. She is a descendant of George Washington Sevey, so we would also be interested in the book Scott Erickson mentioned. Terri, could you send me the address and phone number of "your" George Sevey? I would appreciate it. By the way, you run a great list! Scott, I will look through my wife's records and see if she has any Sevey information. I'll e-mail you and let you know what she has. If you are interested, you can send me your address and I'll mail the info. He is not on-line to my knowledge, but he and his wife are avid family historians. In fact, George was my Utah History teacher when I was in the 7th grade. Good man. Holler at me. Terri

Joe, My Mother lives in St. George. One time while there visiting I went tothe St George Public Library. I have an ancestor who was called by Brigham to go there and build buildings, etc. I went to the librarian at the desk and told her that I was looking for info on early ancestors. They took me to a little room with a locked door, let me in and left me to go through their local history collection. I found a book with a picture of my ancestor, Willis Coplan and wife, that I had never seen before. I went through loads of books and then they let me bring out my treasures and zerox them myself. It was incredible. Also stopped by the cemetery there to ask about relatives on another line and got a couple of hair-raising, black sheep stories for my family collection on some distant cousins buried there. You just never know!! The Museum in the old Court House in Beaver is great, too. Hi Joe There is a DUP office in Panguitch, on the main road, I was there last Sept. my dad is from Panguitch. There is a lot of history in this Beautiful area. There is a book The Golden Days of Garfield County, that relates alot of the history and stories of the area. Patrick LeMmon http://kathyshomespun.com > >
>I'am going down to St George and on up thru Hatch and to Panguich Joe, if you're going to be in Hatch with time that you can't spend productively researching, you might want to visit the remains of the dam that failed on May 25, 1914. There are some very dramatic stories of people escaping from the flood that resulted, and some even better stories of people acting like Paul Revere to warn their neighbors downriver that the flood was coming. It affected people from Hatch all the way past Junction, where the Piute Reservoir dam held fast and stopped the flood. No human lives were lost, although many animals were drowned and the property damage was huge. The damsite is just southwest of town, and the spillway and lava-rock covered hillside are clearly visible. When I visited, I just asked somebody on the street for directions. Make it clear that you want the old collapsed dam, not the more recent damsite. I did a quick search of my flood files just now, and the names Justet and West came up (although the West -- Earl West -- appears to have been a traveling salesman from Ogden). And I know I still haven't sent you the family data you wanted :-< Because of that, I hesitate to make promises to more people, but if any of you had 1914 ancestors in Hatch, Panguitch, Circleville or Junction, or any of the ranchland along the river between those points, you might want to drop me a line to see if I can find your family names in my flood file. Someday I'm gonna write the definitive history of that flood ... Best -- Ardis Parshall AEParshall@aol.com

Dan, you may have already checked it, but I just called Diane Parkinson, Director of the FH Library of the BYU Harold B. Lee Library, who has compiled a cemetery index of all burials in Utah County cemeteries. She couldn't find Amanda Ann Starr Curtis in her index, so you are probably correct that she is not buried in Utah County. Diane said her index shows many Starrs buried in the Evergreen Cemetery and I think that was in Springville. Her index is supposed to be on-line soon through the Ancestry website. She said she thinks the SLC Cemetery Index is on-line now through Ancestry, but I haven't checked. It is available on CD, I know. Dan, Last year I was part of the project to do all the cemeteries of Utah Co. If you still think she might be buried there you could call the FHC at BYU 378-6200 and ask someone to look in the big book for you. Salt Lake County is supposed to be doing the same thing, but I am not sure in the project status. Loni Gardner, do you know? I might sugget the follwing as alternatives: Try the Obituary Card Index on film that the LDS Church has available. For the very early years, especially, many of the pioneer deaths are reported, regardless of where they took place. Also there is the Early Church Info Card File and the Journal History of the Church on film. It lists regular people not just the famous folks! Also there can't have been too many cemeteries that early on. You could actually call the cemeteries and ask them to seach there files for you. I would not have found my Great Grandmother if I hadn't checked with the office of the Wasatch Lawn Cemetery. My Great Grandfather and uncle have a stone because they were military, but she does not. She is right by the tree next to her husband, they told me. Laurie
I have been searching in vain all over Utah County, Utah to find the cemetery record of a pioneer ancestor that was living in Springville. I now believe that she may have been buried in Salt Lake County. Does anybody know if cemetery records for Salt Lake County are available on the internet? I imagine I could find it at the library in Salt Lake, but I don't know when I will get up there. The ancestor I am looking for is Amanda Ann Starr Curtis. Born: 30 Sep 1822 in Florence, Huron, Ohio. Parents: Jared and Eunice Starr Died: 11 Sep 1853 in Salt Lake(?)
Hi all While out and about today. Being a good husband and depositing my paycheck into my wifes checking account. I stopped at my local Deseret Book Store 3843 West 5400 South Kearns, Utah 967-3884 Guess what they have? One copy of LDS Family History Suite on their shelves. Told the ladies I was going to post this. Great idea. First come first served. Good luck "There's a mighty big difference between good, sound facts and facts that sound good." Earlier this month the Pioneer Companies 1863 and 1864 to Utah Part 2 were listed. Is this information coming from the booklet, Mormon Emigration 1840-1869, that the Daughters of the Utah Pioners published? I bought the booklet for $2.00 and it is wonderful! In the back of the book is a table of distances by W. Clayton giving the prominent points and remarks and the distances from Winter Quarters and the Great Salt Lake. Write to Historical Department 50 East North Temple Street Salt Lake City, UT 84150 There are a couple of reference books that wold give the exact MSS # [manuscript] and the number of pages involved. They would have those books. We do at BYU. Can't quote exact titles. They would have had to get a copy for the author so they will know which one. I found in the book - " Journey To Zion Voices From The Mormon Tail" written by Carol Cornwall Madsen - A reference regarding my ancestors autobiographical Sketch - The reference states - Autobiographical Sketch of Isaac Hunt, typescript, LDS Church Archives Is there somewhere that I can send for a copy of this? The part that was quoted was - "Isaac Hunt had sent his parents laboriously saved money to emigrate and anxiously awaited their coming. When the expected company reached the Valley, Isaac looked for his parents but without success. "What is the matter that they didn't come?" he inquired. "Yes, my boy," he was told, " they did come, but both died on the trail." Thanks for the help. They are out as well. The only hope of finding one is to find it at a local store. Thanks any way for your efforts. I truly appreciate it.
