    1. [HANDCART-L] Pioneer Heritage CD-ROM Handcart List Errors
    2. Please be advised that the lists of handcart companies on the Pioneer Heritage CD-ROM have many errors. The lists are published in the DUP series. Many descendants "added" their ancestors to the list who DID NOT belong there. For example, the list for the 9th HC Company lists Isaac C. Morris and Sarah Henderson, his wife. He emigrated in 1853 and she did in 1852. They had a son who married a daughter of Daniel Robison, captain of the 9th HC company. I've done extensive research on this company if anyone else wants a copy of my list. The most reliable starting point are the lists published in the back of "Handcarts to Zion" by Leroy & Ann Hafen. This is available in paperback at the Church Museum of History & Art in SLC and at Deseret Book stores. This lists came from the official lists turned in by HC company captains and are part of the Journal History of the church. While some of the company lists are sketchy (I think the 6th has only a handful of names), I don't believe there are any people ON these lists who don't belong there. They should be used as a starting point for research. If you have ancestors NOT on these lists who ARE on the DUP list, I would not accept that as a fact without thorough research. I've come across various biographical/autobiographical sketches for one woman on the DUP list for the 9th HC company, and sometimes it says she came in 1860 with "a handcart company" and in other places they came with a wagon company. I think it was the latter. As a further note, there are MANY errors in Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah. I was advised early on in my research that this is not a very reliable source. For instance, according to PPMU, one of Daniel Robison's brothers came with the 10th HC company, although he is on the official list for the 9th! In fact, Daniel's parents and all of his brothers and sisters and their families (with one exception), emigrated with the 9th. The exception was a sister whose husband could afford a wagon, but they all came out from Pennsylvania to Florence together. Lyndia Carter of Springville, Utah is in the process of publishing her book on the Willie & Martin handcart companies. I haven't talked to her in a while, so I don't know where or when it will be published, but I expect it will be available in SLC area bookstores when it is. [I won't put her address and phone number here without asking her for permission first.] My annotated list of the 9th company is attached as a word file.

    1. [HANDCART-L] Right click, too!
    2. Eldon & Terri Jensen
    3. Hi all (Wayne ;) All pc's have two or three buttons on the mouse. If you find 'any' image file, whether it is on a webpage, or from our Pioneer cd, a RIGHT CLICK works better in most instances than the double 'left click'. I know I have been able to save tons of 'image' page files from scanned books by simply using the RIGHT CLICK. Then you can save this image right in the 'file' you want it. I usually use this for articles such as the William and Mary Quarterly on-line at the JSTOR site. There is also scanned books at the Making of America site that this works on. Then I just use a 'split' screen in Microsoft word to pull up the picture (I import it) and the other half screen as a blank file to type in the information. Works wonderfully! Wayne, try that and see if it doesn't do the trick! (Of course, I had to be reminded several times by the actual computer expert in the house, and that ain't me! but the 'other-half') Terri

    1. Re: [HANDCART-L] exporting files from the Pioneer Heritage CD-ROM
    2. Eldon & Terri Jensen
    3. Wayne: I don't have FTM, but when I have needed a picture from the cd, I just double click on it. A frame goes around the picture and then a 'new' window comes up to allow you to save it wherever you need it. You might need to export it to a separate file, then import it into FTM. I would think that would work. You will probably need to go back into Windows Explorer and delete the 'extra' photo file once it is in FTM, but that shouldn't be a major problem. 2. Andy E. Wold
    3. Lynda, My ancestors were also part of the Daniel Robison Handcart Company. Along my father's lines, it was the William Walker family, and along my mother's line, it was Joseph Slater (and his sister Hannah) and Mary Ann Webb. Joseph and Mary Ann married three days after arriving in Utah, and I am looking for any information on how their relationship developed. Were they involved before they came to Utah? or before they came to America? or did it develope along the Plains? They are listed one after another on the Roster List from Fort Laramie, Wyoming, so I imigaine that it had developed at least by then. Do you have any info on this? Any information you have on the journey would be helpful. 3. Thanks Sandi!! As I have stated before, just the ONE book alone on the FAmily History Suite is worth over $50.00. There is also the Redbook and several other reference books. Not to mention the bunches and bunches of church history and Daughters of the Utah Pioneers books. I love Ancestral Quest. It is PAF compatible with the older version of PAF and is being upgraded to be compatible with the newest version of PAF. Good stuff. I hope that Sandi has some takers on this generous offer! Then today I realized I might have one other source. My husband works in an office above a computer repair business that also has a very small sales floor. They have, in the past, carried a few copies of FHS and LDS Collectors Library. And since it's not the kind of place most people would think to look, I decided to give it a try. I called my husband and he went downstairs to check. Sure enough - they have 4 copies! He talked to the owner and he took them off the shelf and set them aside to give me time to let people know. Since this place isn't exactly a discount store, they are charging $69.95. If you want one, I will get it and ship it myself which should only be about another $3.00 or so. Let me know and I'll get right on it. Sandi Wheelwright Smithfield, Utah
