John In checking my Emigrant Roster CD I find two Edward Edwards both on the same ship. 1849 237-1 one person age 37 1849 239-3 party of 3 age 28 They were on the ship Buena Vista Other Edward Edwards were found in 1855 then 1861 Could they have came at a later date? Hope this helps. BUENA VISTA Ship: 547 tons: 141' x 29' x 15' Built: 1848 at Newburyport, Massachusetts With 249 Welsh Saints aboard, the full-rigged Buena Vista sailed out of Liverpool harbor on 25 February 1849. Elder Dan Jones presided over the company. He was one of the most successful Mormon missionaries and had been a close friend of Joseph Smith. Master of the vessel was Captain Eben H. Linnell. Thomas Jeremy, one of the emigrants, gave this description of the voyage: "We had fine weather and fair wind every day. Indeed it was much more a pleasure trip than I expected. In one part of the ship musicians were playing while in other parts, good books were being read and studied. Others were conversing about our country and success of the Gospel in Wales. We held prayer meetings nearly every night instead of family prayer." After this uneventful passage, the ship arrived at New Orleans on 19 April. The company continued up the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to Council Bluffs, but many of the Saints suffered with cholera. Hailing out of Boston, Massachusetts, the Buena Vista was a two-decker with a square stern and billethead. This three-master plied the seas for forty-one years. She was later rigged as a bark and hailed out of Port Townsend, Washington, where she was condemned and sold in 1889. Steve, I am not a scriptorian but I bet there are some here who are. However, I do have the big book on hand called, 'Mormon Doctrine'. It has the reply you are seeking. If anybody is quicker than I am and can answer Steve first, please feel free to do so. I will go downstairs and dust off the book ;Z) I plan to reply to Steve privately, so if anyone else would like a copy of what I type in from the book, don't hesitate to holler at me. Thanks Diane, All Rootsweb lists have the same instructions. To sub to the list just send a message to LISTNAME-L-Request@rootsweb.com with 'subscribe' in the 'subject' part and 'subscribe' in the message part. Try to remember to leave off any signature lines you have. That's it. To unsub, just use the same listname with 'unsubscribe' instead of 'subscribe'. So, for the Handcart list the address would be HANDCART-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM If any of you prefer the digest mode, then just send the message to Handcart-D instead of Handcart-L (also the same for any rootsweb list). Have a good day everybody! Terri At 03:53 PM 6/6/98 -0700, diane epperson wrote: >Hello all, > >I am forwarding this message that I received on my Ships list. I do want to apologize for sniveling...unusual for me, and I wish the best for you all. Rita
Did you check the Crossing the Ocean Index since William Richards came from England? The Family History Library has a set of microfilm rolls of indices from Mormon emigrant ships from the late 1840s up to the early 1900s. These films are essentially 3x5 index cards that have been placed in alphabetical order, then filmed. There is a card for each single or family, with name of ship and year, port of departure and arrival port. Once you have found an index card for your ancestor, then you can go to the actual ship's register (another microfilm set). The registry give age, occupation and a local address for each group. The local address is not always a family member; sometimes it is the local Mormon agent. There is a similar index, nicknamed "Crossing the Plains Index." This covers handcart and wagon companies from 1847 until the completion of the railroad in 1869. This index was created from the official lists of companies from the Journal History of the Church. Most of the lists came from the Deseret News. The list was published even before the company arrived, so friends and family could go out to meet the new arrivals, often helping them from Bear River over the mountains into the valley. The cards have only names, ages, name of company and year. SOMETIMES, also the name of the ship if they came from Europe. The film numbers for both set of indices and the ships registers can be found by searching the FHL catalog via a locality search for Utah as a state, then scrolling down topics to find Emigration and Immigration. THESE TWO INDICES SHOULD BE USED AS A START FOR ANYONE WITH PIONEER ANCESTRY. While they are not perfect, you will find about 90% plus of pioneer ancestors in one or both of these indices (both if emigrated from Europe). After all, they didn't get to the valley by starship transporters!! The 1900 census is another source of emigration information for foreign-born saints. Look in the columns for year of immigration, number of years in US and naturalization. The year may not be 100% accurate (especially if the person immigrated as a child), but it is a good start. Early Utah ward records sometimes have information on birth, parents, etc. You will have to check the FHL catalog under the locality, then church records. If you can find the person in a ward record in the early 1900s, you'll get even more info. I've looked at ward records going back to the early 1860s, but SLC records go back to the beginning. There are also ward records for Nauvoo. Another source is the IGI. Many who were baptized in Great Britain show up on the ward/branch records transcribed by Minnie Margetts a long time ago. Also marriages performed in the Endowment House are in the IGI. You need special permission to view the actual Endowment House records on microfilm; photocopying is not allowed, and you can only look at the record of a direct ancestor. I don't remember whether these films can be loaned to local FHCs. Hope this helps. P.S. Richards is also a common Welsh surname. ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: [HANDCART-L] William Richards Author: appomattoxway@lgcy.com Date: 6/5/98 9:20 AM Does anyone have information or connections to: William Richards born in England came to Utah in 1879-80 at the age of 26 William married 31 Jul 1880, Salt Lake City, to: Elizabeth Georgina Cook b 30 Nov 1863 Bankstown, Australia William and Elizabeth were divorced by 1891. Even the Family History Library in Salt Lake City can't do the research for you, they are just too busy. Hello everyone, I have now returned home from a holiday in Australia where the shops are wonderful and climate is warmer than here at the moment. I am seeking my relations and descandants from Henry and Ann Patten (sometimes spelled 'in') they arrived on the Arkwright in 1866 George Patten was also with them. I would dearly like to contact my American Relations and exchange information. Henry was my Grandmother Clara Lousia's Uncle. Clara married Frederick James Rudge and they arrived in NZ in 1892. This list is wonderful as it due to joining Handcart I found out the ship and date of arrival. Thank you to those who have help, have offered and anyone out there who may be able to send information my way. Kind regards Marie Auckland NZ

As I said before, the 4 copies of Family History Suite I found went quickly. However, I ran across 3 more copies in another small computer store here. Again it is a small store that never did stock too many copies so they don't discount them as much as the larger stores did. They want $69.95 and I'll be happy to mail one to anyone who is interested. Sandi Wheelwright wheelwrt@cache.net
