I am seeking information on a James McGuffie who immigrated to the U.S.A. aboard the ship ERIN'S QUEEN. He left Liverpool, England on September 5, 1848 and arrived in New Orleans on October 28, 1849. He was traveling with his wife Margaret Dennett McGuffie and 4 children. The ERIN QUEEN had 232 Mormons on board under the direction of Simeon Carter. James McGuffie was in the first company of pioneers that accompanied George A. Smith to Parowan, Utah. I would greatly appreciate any help. Judy Smith E-Mail smithtoaks@aol.com P.S. The name was also spelled McGUFFY and McGUFFEY
Hi all: You can also purchase the "LDS Emigrant Roster and Voyage History" CD-ROM directly from: Grant Davis P.O. Box 11784 Salt Lake City, UT 84147 for $20.00. I learned about it at the Tracing Mormon Pioneers website. Since I'm in California, this was an easy way to order it. By the by, the "Tracing" address is: http://www.vii.com/~nelsonb/pioneer.htm#top it has a lot of good info. Julie

To the list: I asked Ronald to post the name of his CD, since I had posted a message directing people to the microfilm indices available at the Family History Library. The CD covers up to 1869, while the microfilm ship lists go into the early 1900s. Anytime you can get a CD and look at it at home while wearing your fuzzy bathrobe and bedroom slippers, I'm for it! It's still exciting to look at the microfilm of the original registers, and see you ancestor's names written in, with their occupations, how much they paid, etc. and to note other families on the same page (could be relatives). The later passenger lists also include the names of returning missionaries, so this source would be one place to look to confirm a relative had served a mission in Europe. Thanks, Ronald. P.S. You can order this CD through Deseret Book online (www.deseretbook.com). The cost is $19.95 plus shipping. If you are a Deseret Book Club member, you get a discount, plus credit for a purchase. The catalog number is SKU 3505075. The author is G. Davis. I was able to find it by searching for "Emigrant" as the keyword. ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: [HANDCART-L] Emigrant CD Author: "Ronald Colby" <rmcolby@micro-net.com> Date: 6/8/98 1:56 PM Lynda The CDs name. I am seeking information about these brothers, who traveled from Liverpool to New Orleans and then up river. They were with their father, perhaps another brother, and wives??? They left Liverpool on 10 Feb 1852 on the Ellen Maria and arrived in New Orleans on 5 April 1852. (These dates came from family records and were confirmed via the Mormon Pioneer Site). I would like to know whether their wives came, what the names of their party might have been, whether they brought any children with them and get information about the trip both from Liverpool and to SLC. Family legend has two stories - one that they went to SLC and one that they left the party and went directly to California. Any help would be most appreicated. Linda
Linda Found John and James on my CD. Family #2 2 in party, same family number for both brothers Looks like the two of them traveled in one party. Information on the Ellen Maria. ELLEN MARIA Ship: 768 tons: 151' x 33' x 17' Built: 1849 by Harrison Springer at Richmond, Maine Three emigrant companies, totaling 1079 Mormons, crossed the Atlantic aboard the square-rigged Ellen Maria. The first voyage began on 2 February 1851 at Liverpool with 378 Mormons on board, including Apostle Orson Pratt and his family who were returning from a mission in Great Britain. Elder George D. Watt presided over the company. Religious services were held several times weekly on shipboard. During the sixty-three-day passage there were four births, five deaths, and three marriages. In general the crossing was pleasant with little sickness. The vessel arrived at New Orleans on 6 April. The Ellen Maria was again chartered for a second voyage with a company of 369 Saints, including 182 financed by the Perpetual Emigrating Fund and a number of returning missionaries. The ship sailed on 10 February 1852 from Liverpool, after being detained for several days by adverse winds. Elder Isaac C. Haight presided over the Saints. During the crossing three babies were born, an elderly woman died, and four marriages were solemnized. After "a pleasant and prosperous" passage of fifty five days the ship arrived on 5 April at New Orleans. On 17 January 1853 the Ellen Maria sailed from Liverpool with her third Mormon company, again after being delayed for several days by contrary winds. Elder Moses Clawson presided over the 332 Saints. The voyage was rough and stormy, especially for the first eight days. Elder Clawson was sick almost the entire crossing. During the forty-eight-day passage there were five deaths, five births, and two marriages. The vessel arrived on 6 March at New Orleans. Captain Amherst Whitmore apparently was master of the Ellen Maria during all three voyages. He was described as a "very kind and considerate man" who treated the "emigrants with all due respect and consideration." This three-masted ship sailed in both the Nesmith & Walsh Line and the White Star Line. I am trying to find info on my gggggg grandfather. His name was Edward Edwards and he married Elizabeth Thomas on October 21, 1820 banns. I am looking for information regarding two things. I know from has marriage certificate there was a William Edwards and a Mary Richards who were the witnesses. Any clue as to how to find out who his parents were? Second, I know they Edward Edwards and Elizabeth Thomas and their children joined the LDS church in the fall of 1848. Then they traveled to America between 1848 and 1850. Can anyone lend a hand in finding out what ship they may have crossed the sea on? Thank you all! John Edwards

I'll paste in the message I sent to the list last week, since I guess you missed it. Did you check the Crossing the Ocean Index? The Family History Library has a set of microfilm rolls of indices from Mormon emigrant ships from the late 1840s up to the early 1900s. These films are essentially 3x5 index cards that have been placed in alphabetical order, then filmed. There is a card for each single or family, with name of ship and year, port of departure and arrival port. Once you have found an index card for your ancestor, then you can go to the actual ship's register (another microfilm set). The registry give age, occupation and a local address for each group. The local address is not always a family member; sometimes it is the local Mormon agent. There is a similar index, nicknamed "Crossing the Plains Index." This covers handcart and wagon companies from 1847 until the completion of the railroad in 1869. This index was created from the official lists of companies from the Journal History of the Church. Most of the lists came from the Deseret News. The list was published even before the company arrived, so friends and family could go out to meet the new arrivals, often helping them from Bear River over the mountains into the valley. The cards have only names, ages, name of company and year. SOMETIMES, also the name of the ship if they came from Europe. The film numbers for both set of indices and the ships registers can be found by searching the FHL catalog via a locality search for Utah as a state, then scrolling down topics to find Emigration and Immigration. THESE TWO INDICES SHOULD BE USED AS A START FOR ANYONE WITH PIONEER ANCESTRY. While they are not perfect, you will find about 90% plus of pioneer ancestors in one or both of these indices (both if emigrated from Europe). After all, they didn't get to the valley by starship transporters!! The 1900 census is another source of emigration information for foreign-born saints. Look in the columns for year of immigration, number of years in US and naturalization. The year may not be 100% accurate (especially if the person immigrated as a child), but it is a good start. Early Utah ward records sometimes have information on birth, parents, etc. You will have to check the FHL catalog under the locality, then church records. If you can find the person in a ward record in the early 1900s, you'll get even more info. I've looked at ward records going back to the early 1860s, but SLC records go back to the beginning. There are also ward records for Nauvoo. Another source is the IGI. Many who were baptized in Great Britain show up on the ward/branch records transcribed by Minnie Margetts a long time ago. Also marriages performed in the Endowment House are in the IGI. You need special permission to view the actual Endowment House records on microfilm; photocopying is not allowed, and you can only look at the record of a direct ancestor. I don't remember whether these films can be loaned to local FHCs. Hope this helps. ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: [HANDCART-L] Edward Edwards & Elizabeth Thomas, Wales Englan Author: "John Edwards" <jb2u@vegasnet.net> Date: 6/8/27 6:48 PM I am trying to find info on my gggggg grandfather. When I first started looking for our family tree... I found a site on the internet that seemed to be associated with the FHC... it had a white background, lovely green (I think) ivy on the left side, and a picture of a temple on it... and it had wonderful information on PAF files... a searchable database and all... does this sound familliar to anyone? Hi, I am looking for the BURRIS family, they have been in Nevada for a while now, but I am looking for ties to them... we have several Harry Burris's, but we are just starting to look... I have been told that the line that I seek was Mormon, and that one of them was possibly wanted for murder in Arizona... though that has not been confirmed... any help on this line would be most helpful...
