    1. Re: [HANDCART-L] Anybody out there?
    2. DBR
    3. Hi Terri. I have a puzzle for someone. I have an ancestor, Ann HERBERT who with her 2 year old son came to Utah with the J.G Willie Handcart Co. There is reference in the book "The Emmigrating Journals of the Willie and Martin Handcart Co. ... by Lynne Slater Turner where it mentions a "Richard GODFREY of Worcester Conference was joined in matrimony to Ann HERBERT of same branch, by Bishop Tyler. (pg.14, 15 Jul 1856, Tuesday) On page 65 of same book is reference to a "Richard GODFREY, brother of Ann GODFREY. Worked on Salt Lake Temple. d. 5 Aug 1912." What is puzzling about this, is that Ann HERBERT married my G-G Grandfather Andrew Jackson RYNEARSON in 1858. (One year after she arrived in Utah.) Were Ann and Richard divorced? Was this Ann HERBERT the same Ann HERBERT that married Richard GODFREY?? I would appreciate any information that would shed some light on this puzzle. Sincerely, Dan Rynearson Eldon & Terri Jensen wrote: > Are we 'awfully' quite or am I allll alone again? > > It's either that or the heat has us all hiding away, or we are alllll on > vacation (ha, I wish I were part of that last one ;) > > We have several newcomers to our list. As President of the Utah Valley Chapter of the Utah Genealogical Association I have been asked to locate Beta Testors for the new UGA CD. The Pioneer Certficates program of UGA allows those with Pioneer ancestry in Utah to submit thier information proving this and receive a certificate for each pioneer ancestor. In turn this information is being gathered in to a collection to be preserved. The CDs [of which this is only the first] willmake it possible for this information to be searchable for research purposes. 1. Re:[HANDCART-L] PE Fund CO. - Capt AO Smoot
    2. Since Linda's request is a common one, I'm sending my reply to the list. Try calling or writing Mr. Bashore at the Church History Library (not the FHL) in Salt Lake City. He keeps a data base of pioneer journals and published reminiscences by company/year for ships and companies crossing the plains. The indices are also on microfilm available from the FHL (find in the FHL catalog under "Utah-Emigration"), but they are a few years old. If you write to the Church History Library, they can send a copy of the list entries for the year you are interested in for about 10 cents per page. Many of the journals and other material are only on microfilm at the church archives, but some is in print. Some of the journals are also in collections at BYU, Univ. Utah, and Utah State. In those case, you'd have to go to the libraries and pore over the microfilm. Mr. Melvin L. Bashore Historical Dept. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 50 East North Temple Street Salt Lake City UT 84150 The telephone number is (801) 240-2745. At the risk of causing a run on mail-in requests, the library is very helpful in making copies from books they have in hard copy and on fiche. I have sent lists requesting articles from journals on western history and LDS church magazines going back to the early 1920s, and they only charged me for the copies. Be sure to be as specific as you can. They will not do the research for you, but will fill requests for specific pages or parts of books. I got copies of articles from Carter's DUP series a few years ago, before they were on CD-ROM. Another source would be the various CD's with LDS Bio Ency, PPMU and the DUP series. A search by surname of captain and the year might yield some brief narratives. If the captain was one of the Youngs, however, you'll pull up every reference to BY in that year, as well as the word "young." I found some additional bios for the year 1860 by this method that weren't listed in Mr. Bashore's database because they didn't have much material on the trek across the plains (only a sentence or two), but they were interesting anyway. Some of these give the person's conversion story and their life in the pioneer period after arriving in Utah. P.S. Re the old man's death, you might check genealogical data. If the family is in Ancestral File, the date and place of death (if entered) might confirm this. I discovered my great-great-grandfather's sister had given birth to a son who lived only a week while they were outfitting the company in Florence. This was not in the story my gggp's told. I discovered it from Ancestral file. Prof. Susan Easton Black of BYU compiled a list of documented pioneer trek deaths for the memorial dedicated last year in Nauvoo. I don't know if this list is published anywhere. ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: [HANDCART-L] PE Fund CO. - Capt AO Smoot Author: Linda Gamble <llgamble@mail.caps.maine.edu> Date: 6/27/99 3:19 PM I have found information the John Carmichael and son James crossed the plains in 1852 in Capt Abraham O Smoot's company. It was listed as the PE Fund Co. They had traveled on the ship the Ellen Maria to New Orleans. John's other son, also named John, came on the Golconda. Any way to find out more information about this company and if it is possible that they could have hooked up before leaving to cross the plains? Also, family legend has the old man dying on the trip up the river or before setting off across the plains. How could I find this out? Thanks. Linda

    1. Re[2]: [HANDCART-L] UT's second cemetery
    2. Here's some information from "Heart throbs of the West." Note that the story gives the year as 1852, but as the source is not quoted verbatim, the date on the stone (1851) is probably correct. Too bad the title of "one of the histories of Utah" is not given. There might have been a mention of Major Ormsby's party in the Deseret News, since they stayed two weeks. The DN is on microfilm from the Family History Library. --------------- Heart Throbs of the West: Volume 6 Monuments Erected by Daughters of Utah Pioneers Marker Number Fifty-Eight Pioneer Cemetery 1849-1856 Erected May 26, 1940 The stone bearing the name Olive Cynthis Ormsby, was placed in the cemetery in remembrance of a California emigrant. This marks the route taken by Major William Ormsby of San Francisco between 1849 and 1852. She was the child of Major Ormsby, and died March 17, 1851. In one of the histories of Utah there is an article prepared by Dr. Oliver Ormsby, who passed through Sessions Settlement when he was twelve years old, on the way to California. Quote from history: "Major William Ormsby and his brother John S. Ormsby, left Pennsylvania in 1849 and went to California. Early in 1852 Major Ormsby went back to Pennsylvania to bring his and his brother's families to California. There were about one hundred souls in the company and they were fitted out with the finest horses and equipment. However, when they reached Salt Lake, they had lost all of their horses and carriages and remained in Salt Lake two weeks to rest and recruit." ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: Re: [HANDCART-L] UT's second cemetery Author: Eldon & Terri Jensen <jensenet@vii.com> Date: 6/26/98 10:32 AM Hi Rita I think that first I would contact the DUP office and find out what they have on your Olive.
