I am attempting to find the origin of my GGGgrandfather John Thomas Hancock b abt 1795 and living in Randolph Co. N.C. In 1850 Census, his son Elias Henderson Hancock is living with his family an a 65 year old, Mary Hancock, believed to be his mother. In the next house is a 38 year old Mahalia Hancock and her two children, Mary P. 14 and John M.11 and Nancy J. 8, who may be Elias brother Abner's wife Mahalia Cox. My GGgrandfather Elias Henderson Hancock left Ashboro N.C. before 1860 along with his brother John Pimpkin and moved to Lebanon Mo. Family lore says that John Thomas Hancock went by the name Tammy and he was the sheriff of Randolph Co before the war of 1812. His father was John Henry Hancock and his father was Nehemiah Hancock, from Danville Va and fought in the Revolutionary war. Any of these sound familiar? Jerry Copeland
That is my family as well! I descend from John Pipkin Hancock. Lisa Cravens (one of the best researchers for Hancocks) gave information: NC Revolutionary Military Papers NC State Archives, Raleigh, NC Folder #282 1811 Power of attorney - Thomas Hancock of "Heartford Co., NC only heir to uncle, David Hancock, who died in Rev. War, to Daniel Cherry of Wilson County, TN 1812 - 640 acres to heirs of Nehemiah Handcock of Hertford Co. 1813 - Martin Co., NC Deposition of John Clark, re: Thomas Hancock, heir of Nehemiah Hancock, deceased. Lisa said "This not only proves Thomas to be the son of Nehemiah, it proves that Nehemiah had a brother David Hancock." She also indicated that the 1790 Hertford Co. NC census listed Nehemiah and is the only Hancock listed so apparently Thomas was already gone. An elderly family member said that his mother said that Thomas' name was John Thomas Hancock. I have no proof of that but it is a family story. It is my understanding that Thomas' wife was Mary Saunders. He was Randolph Co. NC sheriff in 1826-27 and somewhere I heard that he was a House Representative in 1828 -29 but I have no proof of that. My John Pipkin Hancock left Lebanon, MO after his wife Minerva died. He moved to Pocahontas, Randolph Co. AR where he died in 1885. Lisa, can you help us with any of this?
