    3. Hi Carol, If you're referring to Col Nicholas Spencer, Deputy Gov of VA....it looks likely there was no daughter named Elizabeth. Col Spencer did not name one in his will (she was speculated to be an "unproven" daughter). He never left any property to an Elizabeth Spencer. I correspond with a descendant of Elizabeth Spencer and she recently determined Elizabeth was likely the sister of Col Nicholas Spencer. I don't recall what proof she had, sorry. I also don't know if her Elizabeth Spencer married a Hancock The above named Col. Nicholas Spencer married Frances Mottram (d/o Col John Mottram) who was the sister of my Ann Mottram who married Capt Richard Wright, styled "of London", who was the s/o Rev Francis Wright of Bolton-on-Swale, Yorkshire & Anne Meryton (d/o the Very Rev George Meryton, Dean of York, Chaplain to Queen Anne and a descendant of Charlemagne). The Wrights descend from ancient Viking families in Yorkshire and the Kings of Scotland (more Vikings). There are also Normans in this line (still more Vikings) Capt Richard Wright died young, leaving young children and a young widow. In his will, he specified that his brother-in-law, Col Nicholas Spencer serve in a guardianship capacity and oversee the education of his children, which he did. Col John Washington (great grandfather of George Washington) also named his good friend and business partner, Col Nicholas Spencer as guardian to his daughter Anne. Two of Spencer's wards, Major Francis Wright and Anne Washington married (my line). Back to Spencer....these were old family ties. There are Washingtons buried at Althorp (Spencer family seat). Winston Spencer Churchill is also a descendant of the [de] Spencer line. The Washingtons had "Old World" ties to the Fairfax family as well. The Spencer line has been documented (and is on the net in several places). I know they've been discussed on [email protected] One of the Medieval genealogists (Leo van de Pas) recently made his d'base available for people to search at www.genealogics.org I'm sure Leo has the Spencers in his d'base since royal genealogy is one of his specialties. The Wright-Washington line (Northern Neck of VA) is on my mom's maternal side, while Clement Hancock & Anthany (Tidewater VA) are on her paternal side. Hope this helps.......~malinda p.s. I'll copy Aunt Peggy and Virginia on this. If they have any additions or corrections, I'll let you know p.p.s.
