    3. Thanks Helene, Delilah Frances DOUTHIT just might be kin to my NC DOUTHITs who moved to then Lawrence/now Sharp Co AR in 1859. My Uriah J DOUTHIT/DOWTHITT married as his 2nd wife Sarah M[artin] SMITH in Surry Co NC. They removed to AR in 1859 and Uriah went "north" to MO to join the Union Army during the War of Northern Aggression ( this discovery was a heavy blow for my mother). Uriah died before 1868. According to a local history book, Uriah was murdered Christmas Day 1867 and his body wasn't found for 3 days. Ond of the few family stories my mother remembers from her grandmother (nee Alice Bell DOUTHIT, d/o Uriah & Sarah Smith DOWTHITT) was her being stuck in a hold in the ground with her baby brother and the family silver, then covered with a big piece of wood and then further covered with dirt...buried alive in other words. Mom always thought it was to protect them from the Yankees. However, it also seems possible that Klan Night Riders might have come and taken Uriah! away. He lived in Evening Shade AR, which was a Klan enclave. That particular year the Klan acted with such violence that they were repudiated by the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, former CSA Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest, who came to Evening Shade from Giles Co TN (home of the Klan) and ordered them to disband. The local Wizard left the country for at least 10 years. One of his kinfolks of a later generation wrote the local history that tells about Uriah's murder. Uriah was in Company E of the 47th MO Infantry. I don't know where he's buried. ~malinda Helene Pockrus <[email protected]> wrote:Delilah F. Hancock - Wife of William A Hancock.
