Major 1770 also had sons Wilson and John. (I have no proof on John.) Major 1770 was aka ARMAJOR, R. MAJOR and MAJOR R. In the Wayne Co and Clinton records he may be any of the three or all three on the same document. Now- where the confusion really is -- his wife died bef 1830. He married his widowed cousin Sarah Gwen (Hancock) Rains (d/o Benjamin 1740). The certificate had him Major R. or R. Major. (I have it somewhere in my files.) One of the two male children in Major 1770 family ( John) is never named ANYWHERE. So to our friendly "researchers of old"-- Major R married young Sally Rains. Eureka!! The problem is solved. The tax rolls even help. Sarah had several hundred acres and Major 1770 paid taxes on his old and his new propery and this made two people. The Census helped here. In 1820 there are two Major Hancocks. In 1830 there is one Major Hancock. In 1840 there was no Major of any spelling so researchers said Major 1770 was dead and Major R was gone. But a new Hancock b y the name of Harmon appeared. (First and last time a Harmon was in KY.) The indices clearly said HARMON. The original film said ARmajor. And the people living in the home of Harmon were children of Sarah Gwen, a widow. This did not become clear untill the 1850 Census. But Major 1770 came back to life in Jesse Corn's pension application and he was visiting daughters in 1850. In 1860 he was in Clinton Co listed as a laborer age 90. Sorry to be so long winded but puttng the Majors together has been a lot of fun and few people beleive it! But the records are all there .
