Quoted verbatim from the Fuson book: ! MAJOR AND ELIZABETH FUSON HANCOCK’S DESCENDANTS IN THE MINISTRY MAJOR HANCOCK (1792-1879) Christian Minister (D.) Transcript from the Herald of Gospel Liberty, published in Dayton, Ohio, September 18, 1880. Number 37, Page 2. MEMORIAL SERVICE AT MIAMI (OHIO) CONFERENCE By N. Summerbell ! I (Major Hancock) was born March 13, 1792, in Patrick County, Virginia. My father’s name was Benjamin; my mother’s was Nancy "Deacons". I was married October 2, 1814, to Elizabeth Fuson (sister of Elder Jeremiah, Samuel, and James, of the Christian Church, Joel and William Fuson, of the Baptist Church). I came to the State of Ohio a month and one day after my marriage, starting November 3, 1814, and arrived November 23, 1814. I was converted and received the pardon of my sins from God August 19, 1816 (I can never forget that day), under the labors of Elder Isaac McBride, a minister in the Christian Church. I was baptized by Elder James Dunlap, a Baptist minister, the following October, and united with the Christian Church in October, 1816, at “Muddy Run” one mile west of West Liberty, Ohio. Our meetings were good - very good. The great and good Elders Nathan Worley, Samuel Kyle, and others - men of God, of great power in the spirit and ability as speakers - preached to us. And our prayer and speaking meetings were very interesting. Elders D. Long, Enoch Harvey, William Dye, of the Miami Conference, Elder Joseph Kirby, George Alkire, and Fergus Graham, of Deer Creek Conference, often labored with success. There were only then the Miami and Deer Creek Conferences in the state. In 1832 I felt that I had a call to the ministry. This came at first when I was riding on horseback in the woods. It seemed to me that I could not speak as a minister but I felt irrestibly impelled to the work. Elder Samuel (the youngest of the five brother ministers) assisted me much by encouragement. I preached (maintaining my family of ten children three boys and seven girls, as best I could by my farming) for thirty years - until unable to do so longer. During this time I laboured hard, often working till midnight, gathering corn and chopping wood by moonlight, asking nothing for my labours in the ministry though I was persuaded to accept half a collection taken up at Palestine Church by Elder Justus Hunt, who gave the collection to Elder Samuel Fuson, who, on our way home, forced me to receive $2.10 - one-half of it - much to my regret ever since, as it seems too little to name, and yet truth compels me to name it. I never took the sole pastoral care of a church, but laboured as I saw openings, and in assisting others, always assisting as a layman in supporting the gospel and contributing in building churches.” ! (Major Hancock left with N. Summerbell a note for $500, to be paid to the charities of the Christian Church). ! He gave the above account very feebly, and lived only about three years. His account of his own ministry is modest, and a much more modest minute than is necessary. Major Hancock was famous, not for pulpit oratory, but for able counsel, gifted utterances, great wisdom, and a model spirit. His was the influence of a prophet rather than a preacher; and ministers and common men listened to his words as an oracle. The universal feeling for him was that of affection, admiration, and reverence. His children are well known as able workers in the church. ! Obituary, September 26, 1879 Source: Unknown ! 3. To Bob Hopkins and Helen Pockrus --- I copied the following from the Missouri Project also. It is obvious there are some errors, but would like you correct what you can. Do either of you know anything about the book or whatever it was by Richard R. Hancock. Is it possible that he lived in Indiana for a year? I somehow doubt that since his own bio said he left VA, and a month later arrived in OH. This seems to partly correct and partly mixed up. What part is correct? Ardath Taken from the Missouri Project: See notes of father; settled in Champaign Co, OH on farm in 1812 Resided in Fluvanna, Goochland Co, VA before moving to Champaign Co, OH John Hancock and His Descendents by Richard R.
