I just thought you might be interested in my story, given the recent topic. Due to computer problems I had to wipe my harddrive. I made a copy of my Family Tree Maker files so I wouldn't lose all of that work. I did not think to make a copy of the program itself off the hard drive. After all was done, I reloaded my FTM disks; starting with the first version I bought & went thru all the updates. Then recovered my files from the backup disk. Imagine my surprise when I could not open them. According to the message I get the files are from a "newer" program than I am using. After giving it some thought, I vaguely remember purchasing & downloading from online an update. I emailed the company about it; telling them I don't want to pay for something I have already purchased. GUESS WHAT! They took 5 days to reply and then say I can either purchase an update or send them my files which they will fix so my program will open them. AS IF I WOULD.......of course I now have to purchase something I have already bought once. I learned 2 lessons. The first being never pay for a download without having a disk for backup and second The owners of this company (which has changed names several times) care only about the money. I am not sure, but I think they bought Ancestry recently. If so, look for things to change at Ancestry. Wandra
