Hello Mary. I replied to your mother Doris tonight before realizing that I also had an e-mail from you. As a result, I am copying this message to her. Before I say more, let me share with you an e-mail I received from someone named Bob Hopkins. It reads as follows: There is a John L Hancock born 1770s probably in VA (or on the VA/NC border) that is a son of Benjamin 1740 and Sarah Lane. This John L was in Cumberland Co KY before 1800 and then disappeared. (He may have died or simply moved on by 1815.) John L Hancock and Tabitha Ballew married on 19 Jul 1806 in Wayne Co, Ky. Benjamin 1740 may be a son of Benjamin 1710 but this has not been proved. BobHop End of Bob's message...... This sounds like the same John L. you discussed in your e-mail. The problem I'm having is that my John L. has to have had a son named William in South Carolina about 1800. The John L. mentioned above doesn't seem to have been in South Carolina around that time and didn't get married until 1806, though he is old enough to have been married earlier to someone besides Tabitha. I wonder if it is possible that there was an elder John Hancock with a son named William living in Warren County, MS at the same time there was an elder John Hancock in the neighboring Copiah County with a son named William. By the way, I found a marriage record on ancestry.com for a John L. Hancock marrying Cynthia Boothe on June 19, 1840, in Copiah County, MS. I am really interested in pursuing this but probably can't do so until next week because of deadline pressures at work (I'm Director of Publications at Texas Tech University). I will be back in touch, however. Doris, would you please send Mary the information I sent you? If you learn more, please share it with me and I'll do the same with you as soon as I can get back to my research. You are right about Robert and Thomas. They were probably sons of one of John L.'s children. I have been trying to make a connection to this family. My gr grandfather was Robert Scott Hancock and he had a brother names Thomas I Hancock. They lived in and around Phoenix, Yazoo County, MS. I was told that John L was married to a Tabitha Belien but the only John L I have been able to find is John L married to Tabitha Ballew. I think this could be the same family. My mother and I think that Robert and Thomas were sons of one of John L's children. The family seems to have come from Virginia, to Kentucky, Tennessee and finally settling in Mississippi. The names of his son's as far as we can tell were John L, Joel W, William, Tarleton, Leonard, Isaac, Josiah Flowers, James, L W, and George M. George M's will mentions his sister Nancy. The dates I have are George M born Va 1805, LW born 1816 Tn, James 1807 KY, Leonard 1815 Tn, Tarleton born 1811 KY, and John L born 1817 Tn. These dates are just from information gathered in the census records. John L is found in 1850 Warren County, Ms census married to Maria age 24, with children Charity age 8, Mary A age 6, Caroline age 4 and James W age 1. Tarleton E was in the same census with Sarah age 21, and Daniel age 2. Leonard was age 35, Artimissa age 23, and his mother Tabitha age 68, this would mean she was born in 1782. I did find someone else with a Tarleton Hancock and I think they must me connected somehow but it is not our Tarleton because the year is wrong. I also looking at the census records for 1830 & 1840 and found John L and William, but I also found that in 1840 the name right before John was Leonard Below. Could this be a relation? Since, John L's son is named Leonard and his wife is Tabitha Ballew this could be a brother. Hope you know some things we do not. Sincerely, Mary ==== HANCOCK Mailing List ==== This is a closed list.
