Bill, I teach PAF on an almost daily basis but prefer Family Origins. I find it easy to use and completely compatible with PAF and all other programs. Not the biggest company around but used by ardent genealogists. The author maintains his own website at Formalsoft.com, has a rootsweb site for all his users that answers the many questions, has written books to correspond as well as the help file and besides I know where he lives<VBG> Too I love the post it notes that I can use to remind me of things I need to research. Will do anything and more than any program can do at a price of less than $25. No one but he owns the company and he has been around for about 10 years. I am using version 9 now. Hi Helene, Thanks for the good advice. I will look into your suggestion. I'm presently using Family Tree Maker but wanted to know what might be better. Thanks again, Bill _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
I have tried many programs including the ones already mentioned. Family Tree Maker did not work out well for me because I needed a program that would take my files and convert them to .html format for viewing on my homepages. If you use FTM then you are stuck uploading to their site. The latest version of PAF is always on my system because it creates great web pages and does an excellent job of making things easy to understand. And, of course, the price is right and there is a PAF companion that can be purchased for very little that will add more features. But, I have to say that I agree with Dick Eastman (Eastman's Genealogy Newsletter) when he says that the best family software is "The Master Genealogist (gold)". It not only converts from almost every other file format, including my old FTM files, but it has always had many of the features that are just now being offered by other programs. Such as automatic indexing (just in case you want to write a book), and oversized family charts with all the common layouts. This program is expensive and cost me $80.00 through Ancestry.com. The company's name is Wholly Genes, Inc. http://www.whollygenes.com/ I don't think I will ever need another program. It has already come in handy a few times when I've had relatives send me files that are in another program's format. I had no trouble converting the files. It also makes great web pages.
