Reflecting on your comments, the scenarios you present certainly make sense and any one or more of them may have occurred. In thinking about it now, I agree that it would be very unlikely that Nancy were literate. I know that even her daughter Mary was illiterate. In fact, Mary recognised her shortcoming, and sponsored the Womans College that was named after her, because she wanted young women to have learning opportunities which was previously unavailable.
