Dear Ms. Powell, I descent from the John Hancock [1688 –1775] and Anna Webb [1695/6 –1771] that you inquired about (via their eldest son, John Hancock [1717-1776] and Abigail Terry [1727 - ], their second son Moses Hancock [1758 –1828] and Wealthy Bishop [1761 – 1845], their second son Eliphalet Hancock [1782 – 1860] and Betsy Yale [1786 – 1864], their eldest son Albert Hancock [1805 – 1899] and Sophia Clark [1811 – 1851]. Their (Albert's and Sophia’s) daughter married my namesake (and Great Great Grandfather in 1854). Thus, Thomas Hancock and Anna Webb are my Great x 7 grandparents. I have not yet discovered any work that deals specifically and exclusively with this Hancock family. I know of four works that mention various member of the line: "New England Marriages Prior to 1700," "Families of Early Hartford Connecticut," by Lucius Barnes Barbour, Charles H. Pope’s, "The Pioneers of Massachusetts" and James Savage’s "A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England." For purposes of economy and sanity, I try to limit my database (and my research) to only the spouses and children of siblings (and their spouses) of my immediate line [except, of course whenever something outside those limits happens to interest me], so my research cannot really be described as “extensive.” The John Hancock [1688 –1775] of your inquiry is the son of Thomas Hancock [ca. 1647 - 1734] and Rachel Leonard [1665 – after 1699]. That Thomas Hancock is alleged to be the son of Nathaniel Hancock [1596 –1652?] and Joanna Wright [1612 –1663?] (and, if this descent is indeed the case, this line would be related, collaterally, to the line that produced the signer of the Declaration of Independence). This relationship is, in my opinion, yet to be fully proven. Rachel Leonard (the mother of the John Hancock who is the subject of your inquiry) is from a so-called “aristocratic” colonial family – i. e., one that can trace its descent from the minor nobility of England. This line of Hancocks seems to have worked its way up the Connecticut River Valley, from Farmington and New Haven CT to Springfield and Wilbraham, MA. My branch of this line ended up in Vermont sometime after the Revolutionary War: Eliphalet Hancock [1782 – 1860] and Betsy Yale [1786 – 1864], my great X3 grandparents were married in Ferrisburg, Addison Co., Vermont on 5 January 1805. Eliphalet’s father, Moses Hancock [1758-1822], participated in the War of Independence as a private under Capt. Charles Colton in the Massachusetts Continental Line. He enlisted in 1777 and served on the Massachusetts Continental Line for three years. I hope the following descendant tree is useful. Thanks John. I am convinced that my gggrandfather was from this line someplace.thought so a few years back but could only find one Zachariah and he was to old but have a feeling that on of those kids had a son named Zachariah.I believe my Zachariah and someof his family went to Baltimore to fight in War of 1812 and stayed for a while.Zachariah died but son or brother Jonathan born around 1783 left in 1830 for Ohio with his wife's family the Stutsons who were also from Mass.I know that these Hancocks were from Mass from census.I guess I'll start corresponding with Mass. Archive. As for coming up river to Mass from Ct. I have another line {BELDEN}who did the same thing until a couple of them decided to go to Ky. That's another mess.Again thank you for your help and good luck at keeping sanity.I lost mine a while back.
