    3. I've been going over the records I have for John Hancock who married Susannah Bridges and their line. Anyone needing the sources for the below info, let me know. It's going to be too long to include all that too. Julia, in trying to make sure these are correct connections, tell me if it is possible for John who married to Susannah Bridges to be a descendant of Augustine Hancock from the DNA results. If so, I think I have this line figured out for the most part. First, from John's will in Cumberland Co., NC in 1772, we know he has sons Robert, Clement, John, and William. There is much speculation that his wife was pregnant at the time and that resulted in a sister for their sons. I haven't identified her as yet. Susannah was the daughter of William Bridges (will in Granville Co., NC) and his wife Susannah. Robert married a lady named Sarah and they moved to Chatham Co, NC where they both died. Clement married a lady named Isabella and moved to SC. He was killed 19Nov1781 at Hayes Station, SC. William married Patty Cheek and is believed to be the William found in the Moore Co., NC records. (Moore County was formed from Cumberland, so that could have happened without him even moving.) John also seems to have been in Moore Co, as Susannah, John, & William are all listed on the 1777 Cumberland Tax List in the area of Cumberland that did become Moore Co. I believe either William or John was the father of John Hancock who married Clarkey Davis and lived in Moore Co., NC. For a long time, this John was speculated to be the son of John Hancock of Montgomery Co., NC, but some time back I had proven that to be impossible. In Cumberland Co., many records name John Hancock in conjunction with a man named Conner Dowd. It seems Dowd was a man of some means, as he was constantly buying and selling land in Cumberland. I also notice that a Joshua Hancock is named in conjunction with Conner Dowd in Cumberland as well. This makes me think this Joshua is a close relative of John's. Conner Dowd was also an executor, along with Susannah, of John's will in 1772. In this will, John Hancock left his son, John, 150 acres, where John & Susannah were already living. Checking deeds, John bought this 150 acres from Conner Dowd 7May1771. It is described as being on the south side of Deep River. It is interesting that Joshua Hancock bought 150 acres from Blair Johnston in 1763 on the north side of Deep River. Joshua then sold that 150 acres in 1769 to Randolph Cheek. According to 'Misc. Ancient Records of Moore Co., NC, by Rassie Wicker, Conner Dowd fled NC in 1781 and his wife was Mary Overton Shields. Now, for the parents of John who married Susannah Bridges. All indications point to his parents being John Hancock and Mary ________. This John Hancock was the son of John Hancock and Jane Holt, of Surry Co, VA (the part of Surry Co that became Sussex Co). John who married Jane Holt was the ONLY son of William Hancock and Elizabeth Spencer. (John is stated as the only son in William's will). William was the on of William Hancock, and grandson of Augustine Hancock. John who married Mary ______ (possibly Bell), had the following children: Nicholas (witnessed the wills of his aunt and uncle, William Hancock and Elizabeth Phillips) Jane m. Hartwell Phillips 24Feb1762 in Sussex Co., VA Randolph Hancock m. Ann Jones Thomas Hancock John Hancock who married Susannah Bridges I should note here that William Hancock who married Elizabeth Spencer is the William who was a member of the Surry Militia in 1687 and was arrested for attending one of their meetings. He, along with Matthew Swann and David Phillips were members. It is very interesting because Matthew Swann, and his wife Mary Harris, had a daugher named Mary Swann. This Mary Swann married William Phillips, son of David Phillips and his wife, Elizabeth Emperor. This William and Mary Swann Phillips were the parents of Elizabeth Phillips who married William Hancock, the son of John and Jane Holt Hancock. Hartwell Phillps who married Jane Hancock (listed above) was the son of John Phillps. John Phillips was the brother of this Elizabeth Phillips. Another interesting point is that in 1740 in Surry Co., VA, I find listings for Clement, Joseph, Robert and William Hancock. Joseph and William are likely the sons of John Hancock and Jane Holt. Clement and Robert are definately the two Malinda has been searching for. I really have to wonder if they aren't also children of John Hancock and Jane Holt. They couldn't be their cousins, as John was the ONLY son of William Hancock and Elizabeth Spencer. The only other explanation could be that they descend from a sibling of William who married Elizabeth Spencer. I think that's unlikely, but is possible. To keep from such long emails, I will continue with a second email on Clement Hancock and Isabella's descendants. Lisa
