While I'm at it, I'll cover this family as well. In earlier research, I had almost convinced myself that Thomas Hancock wo married Mary Saunders, and was the sheriff of Randolph Co., NC was the son of John Hancock and Jane Holt. They did have a son named Thomas, and I have had little luck in learning about him. In an article written many years ago about Thomas in Asheboro NC records, which is the county seat of Randolph Co, where Thomas served as sheriff, I found it stated that Thomas moved to Randolph Co from Hertford Co., NC. After seeing that, I did some research on Hertford records and did find that in some Rev. War grant files, a Thomas Hancock was listed as an heir of Nehemiah Hancock. Later, Thomas was listed as the only heir of David Hancock, in these same Rev. War files. Further research in Hertford turned up a will of Grace Hancock. This appears to be Thomas' mother. Children of Thomas Hancock and his wife, Mary Saunders were: Abner P. m. 14Feb1832 to Mahala Cox (her dad was the jailor in Randolph Co) Elias 'Henderson' m. 22Nov1846 to Lavina Lewallen John Pipkin m. 17Feb1848 to Minerva Ann Elliott Hillary 'Hogan' Hancock m. 14Jan1843 to Youtha Cole Nancy m. 2May1848 to Dawson Lewallen Births and marriages of all these children were in Randolph Co., NC. Henderson and wife Lavina, and Hogan and wife Youtha, are both buried in Moore Co., NC. Hillary Hogan's wife Youtha Cole was the daughter of Raford Cole. Their children were: Edward Caswell b 22May1850 in Randolph, m. Liza ____ and died 29Apr1928 in Randolph Raeford b. 10May1856 m. Mary Bell McAskill and died 7May1932 in Randolph Betty Elizabeth b. abt 1859 m. Henry M. Johnson and died 25Jan1937 in Randolph William Henry b. abt 1844 and died 1924 in either Moore or Randolph. wife - Permalia E. A. b. abt 1847 in Randolph Abner C. b. 1850 in Randolph William Henry Hancock listed above learned the pottery trade from his neighbor, Jacob Dorris Craven. Jacob was from the long line of Craven family potters (yes, related to me too) in Seagrove, Moore Co., NC. Abt 1880 William left Craven and moved to Fayetteville where he worked for the famed potter, Edgar Allen Poe. William and Manley William Owens were the first potters at Poe & Co. In 1896, William moved to Johnston Co where he bought 50 acres of land and farmed part of the year, and turned pottery part of the year. William and his wife had at least one son, John W. Hancock b. 1865. He married Margaret ______ and they had at least one son, Hoyt T. Hancock b. 1898. John W. also practiced the art of pottery. In 1903, William sold his property and returned to either Randolph or Moore Co, where he died in 1924. Today, any piece of William's pottery is worth a small fortune. Elias Henderson Hancock and wife Lavina had at least 2 children: Mary J. b. 1859 in NC Abner P. or T. b. 1860 in NC Also, in the 1859 census, Mary, mother of Henderson, was living with Henderson and Lavina in Randolph Co., NC. Abner Hancock and wife Malaha Cox (daughter of Joel Cox, the jailor, and Jane Craven) had 2 children: Dr. John Milton Hancock b. 27Aug1838 and died at age 39. He was wounded at Gettysburg, and later contracted TB, which killed him. He married Lydia Jane Page. Nancy J. Hancock b. abt 1842 and m. Randal Presnell 6Jan1858 in Randolph Co., NC. Administrators of Abner's estate were John P. Hancock, John Presnell, and Jacob Voncannon. John Pipkin Hancock and his wife Minerva Ann Elliott moved from NC to AR, where they died. They are buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Randolph Co., AR. John m. #2 Deborah Winter. John and Minerva had: Louisa Jane b. 4Aug1849 Randolph Co., NC Winfield Scott b. 12Aug1852 John Randolph b. 24June1857 in Lebanon, MO m. Predona Jane Tompkins. The family moved to MO just before John was born. Sara Liz b. 29Aug1854 Levinna Ann b. 17Mar1860 Mary Ellen b. 11Oct1861 Malsy b. 2June1863 Now if we can only find the parents of Nehemiah or David Hancock from Hertford, we will be in business. Lisa
