    1. Re: [HANCOCK-L] Secrets of the Dead, September 2, 2003
    2. Jean I did not see the PBS special but I am very familiar with the story and with the history of Eyam. I have a very fat file on Derbyshire where I researched pretty extensively. My information comes from sources such as: The Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society; The Feudal History of the County of Derby; The Reliquary, Quarterly Archaeological Journal and Review; A Derbyshire Armory; Register of The University of Oxford, etc. I have historical information on the Eyam Plague 1665-1666 and a large "Map of The Village of Eyam in the County of Derby showing the historical sites, buildings, and episodes of history, particularly those connected with the visitation of the Plague in 1665-1666." It includes the gravesite where Elizabeth Hancock buried her husband and all six of her children within a week in August 1666, but she never became ill. From a DNA point of view, it is interesting that Elizabeth was not a Hancock by blood. If she carried the CCR5 gene, delta 32, which gave her immunity from the plague, the Hancocks, her husband and children, did not have it. I have court records and other records going back to 1400 that show that Hancocks were pretty numerous in Derby throughout that period. Even then they were using our favorite given names: William, Thomas, John, Robert, Edward, Nathaniel, Richard, Henry, Anne, Elizabeth and Joan. The Register of The University of Oxford lists many Hancocks. A couple of the more interesting entries: Matriculations: Hancock, William; Devon, arm.f.n.m., 14. June 7, 1616; William Hancock; adm. B.A. (cumlatus') 4 Feb 1618/19 Admissions: June 8, 1618: William Hancock, esq., son of Edward H., of Commerton, Devon, esq. While the Plague of 1665-66 seems like a long time ago, remember that our immigrant ancestors were already in America by that time. Arvil
