many of the virginia Hancocks moved to Oglethorpe, Ga, Jefferson county. in 1791 with land grants. This is Anthony Hancock line from Charlotte County, VA. We have many Marshalls in the line that went there as well. In a message dated 2/3/2013 12:47:35 A.M. My John Hancock who originated in SC, probably Edgefield County and his father John Hancock of SC and possibly from VA are my ancestors. My John Hancock lived in Talbot County, GA. His father John Hancock and his two brothers Oliver & James Hancock lived in Talbot County, GA. The older John Hancock's sister-in-law, Martha Oliver Hancock also lived in Talbot County, GA. The older John Hancock's nephew, Bennett Hancock also lived in Talbot County, GA. My John Hancock married Margaret Louisa Marshall in Talbot County, GA in 1841. Margaret Louisa Marshall was the daughter of David Marshall and Frances A. Stewart of Jones County, GA and Talbot County, GA. That was my brick wall for over 30 years. Suddenly, David Marshall has a father an mother. The father was David Marshal, and he married Rebecca Baker in Warren Co. NC in1793. Someone in New Orleans had researched this and found it. There are a lot of Marshalls in Warren County and Halifax County, NC. I already have that research. One of the Halifax County, NC Marshalls lived about 10 miles from my John Hancock in Talbot County, GA. I have tried very hard to make a connection to him because of something my mother said. She said, "I went to the Marshall house (William B. Marshall) with my parents when I was 8 years old (1923)" My mother said that her mother, Lizzie Lou Hancock Kersey called the old man who lived in the house, "Uncle" That has baffled me for many years becaus! e there was no way he could have been an uncle. If indeed my David Marshall is related to William B . Marshall, they would be second or third cousins. I am still working on my male Hancock cousins to do the DNA. Maybe someday. I have been reading with great interest about William Brown and Lucy Simmons of Jones County, GA. I have tried to make a connection there, but I don't think there is a connection. Here is what I know on the Browns of Jones County, GA and the Simmons of Hancock County, GA, Jones County, GA and possibly Crawford County, GA. My Brown was Bazel Brown. His parents were William Brown & Elizabeth Hammack of Hancock County, GA. There are many references that say it was Elizabeth Simmons. Her sister Catherine, married William Simmons. They lived in Jones County, GA. After Elizabeth's husband, William Brown was killed during the 1812 war in TN, she came back from TN and lived next door to William Simmons and her sister Catherine, Hammack Simmons. After William Simmons died about 1828, Catherine and Elizabeth moved to Crawford County and/or Upson County, GA. Thank you for all the work you have done on the Hancocks. ------------------------------- Join our DNA Project at: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hancock (Scroll down to place your order) ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to HANCOCK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
