    1. [HANCOCK] The interesting thing that DNA has found for me.
    2. Some time ago, I said that I would post a funny / interesting thing that I learned from my Hancock DNA matches and here it is. As you may know, I haven't been able to get past 1668 Craven / Bath, NC. This is from Accomack County, VA "On 2 Mar 1666, Ann, wife of Miles Gray, admitted adultrey with John Hancock from Apr 1665 to 2 Mar 1666 and asks husband's forgiveness. On 18 Feb 1667, Ann had a bastard child and Miles left her. Ann Toft paid her fine instead of the whipping. On 17 Feb 1667, Miles Gray disowned Ann Gray as his wife. She had a bastard child and he left her to the law. On 27 Oct 1668, Ann Toft paid 500 lbs of tobacco for her (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, pp. 21, 51, & 60). Also on 27 Oct 1668, Miles Gray, who had fathered a bastard child by Hannah Leach who was one of Ann Toft's servants, paid Ann Toft a fine of 1500 lbs of tobacco (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, f. 20). In 1669, Jane the wife of Robert Hill who had formerly been appointed whipper for a year, was ordered to "some time in each month Jane Hill shall go to the house of Mrs. Ann Toft and likewise to all other houses where the like order shall be given, and that the sheriff or deputy see that Jane Hill do with a fitting whip give unto John Hancock, Ann Gray, Adam Rocinson and Penelope Stafford twenty lashes on their bare backs soundly laid on, and this is to be continued for a year, once in each month" " If you look at Group 4 of our Hancock Project, which is my group, you will see that one of the DNA matches is with a fellow named GRAY whose ancestor is Miles Gray. This means that John Hancock of that record above is related to my Hancock line. One interesting thing is that some of my Craven Co., NC ancestors came from Accomack, VA and the Jane Hill who did the whipping is one of my ancestors. Her granddaughter, Ann Hill (daughter of Richard Hill) married Evan Jones and their daughter, Tamar Jones married my James Hancock. Now to a strange thing. My ancestor, Nancy Gray b.c1810 of Currituck Co., NC married Daniel Burfoot Lindsey and they moved to Mississippi by 1850 and then to Prairie Co., Arkansas by 1860. My ancestor Frederick W. Hancock b.1808 moved from Craven Co., NC to Mississippi by 1850 and then to Prairie Co., Arkansas by 1860. Their children Matilda D. Lindsey and William Henry Hancock were married in Prairie Co., Arkansas in 1865 and named their first son, Miles Daniel Hancock and the second son, Gaston Gray Hancock. I have often wondered where they got the name Miles. Note that is was 200 years after that affair in Accomack Co., VA. Coincidence? I don't know. Could Nancy Gray of Currituck be descended from Miles Gray and really be a Hancock? I don't know. Nancy's father was Thomas Gray and his father was Joseph Gray, both of Currituck, NC. I can't get back father in that line. Julia

    3. WHAT A STORY, Julia! And, what great sleuthing and finding at least some of the connections. Perhaps in time DNA will open more doors to solving some of those riddles. Since we started many years ago with our searches, just to be able to divide our families into DNA groupings at least allows each participant to focus on those within those who match. We still have a long ways to resolve the matches of those in Group 3. Some connections have been identified while others of Chart 3 are still left to wonder or breaking through the brick wall.
