Hi Lisa, The tests for females, are: the mtDNA that traces your direct female line, i.e. your mother, her mother, her mother and on up. Females change their name every generation. The other is the FamilyFinder test that traces all your ancestors, but there again, many of them change their names every generation. It is passed from fathers to all their children and mothers to all their children. Your matches from your Hancock line may not be named Hancock, but most people are pretty good at posting all their ancestor's names or their GEDCOM which is better. You don't have to purchase those two tests through a Project and a Project is of no use. You will be able to see all you matches.. Actually, the surname Projects are only for males. Arvil, FYI, my family history at www.hancockonline.net currently includes three men named William Hancock who were born in Devon, England. They are as follows: 1. William Hancock, b. 1817-1821 at South Molton, Devon, England son of Robert Hancock & Frances Gardener Sources: 3 2. William Hancock, b. circa 1847 at Kings Nympton, Devon, England son of James Hancock & Jane Loosmore husband of Susanna Jane (Susan) Nickels Sources: 6 3. William Hancock, b. circa 1887 at Bishops Nympton, Devon, England son of George Hancock & Bessie Smoldon Sources: 2 I hope the above helps identify your ancestor. Unfortunately, the name Hancock was quite common in England in the 1800s -- making research difficult. So far I only have been able to trace my Hancock line back to: - Robert Hancock, b. circa 1754 at place unknown but probably Devon husband of Agnes Carter and father of 8 children Sources: 4 Best regards, Dan Hancock dan@hancockonline.net www.hancockonline.net On 20-May-14 10:44 AM, arvhancock wrote: > Dan: Thanks for responding. Alvis, Eldon & Helene: Good to hear from each of you and glad that you are still hard at work on your Geneology. I haven't touched mine in ages. You may recall that Annie and I had pretty much completed our research after many years of traveling all over the country before we had access to the Internet. But when we got the Discussion Lists I had a ball for several years just enjoying the exchange of information with people like you and many others. Annie and I are now 83 and have been married for 63 years. We've slowed down a bit but haven't completely given up traveling. In October we took a 15 day round trip cruise from San Francisco to Hawaii. We are surrounded by lots of family that keeps us busy with family activities. Besides our two sons we have scads of nephews and nieces who are grandparents. So we have 3 generations under us (we're the only 2 left of this generation - in the California branch) so we have a very big family, including all the in-laws, that likes to celebrate every birthday, anniversary, and any other occasion that comes up. We also have a wonderful church with a large and active Seniors group. I hope that all of you are still healthy and enjoying life as we are. God bless. Alvis, Helene & Eldon: Great to hear from old friends. It's been a long time. The reason I posted: Yesterday at church a young man was referred to me because he was wanting to begin his family research. He wanted suggestions on how to begin. I had a nice visit with him but discovered that I have been removed from Genealogical research for so long that I hardly know what to tell him. The man's name is Ted Parker and he wants to begin researching his Parker family. Can you help me with the things that he needs to do to get started? Great to hear from you and you may be hearing from me with a personal note. Thanks. Hi Arvil, I hope your being out of touch doesn't mean you have been ill. It is good to hear from you and Alvis. I can't believe how old I have gotten since we started this and had so much fun researching together. I didn't see your original post. I have been at the National Jamestowne Society meeting in Williamsburg and have a million emails to go through. Can't leave my computer for long. It seems that new researchers don't know about Rootsweb.com and use sites like FaceBook instead. They don't realize how many of us "seasoned" researchers are still on all the mailing lists. Hi Lisa, The test for your male Hancock should be the y-DNA37 test which is on sale at this time, but I am not sure when the sale will end. Go to the link below and scroll down to place your order. It appears that they have made an error in the price of the 25 marker test. https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hancock If you have further questions, let me know.
