    1. [HANCOCK-L] Haverhill, MA & Hampstead, NH
    2. Hello! Does anyone have information on William, Jacob or Joseph Hancock (perhaps brothers) who lived in Haverhill, MA during the 1740's? Joseph was in Hampstead, NH during the 1750's and then went to Londonderry, NH and later died in Canterbury, NH ca 1776. Jacob was in Canterbury and Northfield, NH during the same time period. William Hancock Sr. died before 16 Apr 1747. His eldest son and executor of his estate, William Hancock of Haverhill, Essex Co., MA sold land "of my father, William Hancock, late of Haverhill, NH" to Jacob & Joseph Hancock both of Haverhill, NH for the sum of 55 pounds. Note: in 1741 the MA state line was moved & 1/3 of Haverhill, MA became Hampstead, NH. I'd certainly appreciate any help on this line. Laura Armetta Notes on William Hancock from History of Haverhill, MA by George Wingate Chase 1861 1) pg. 310-311 - in 1741 living on the NH side of Haverhill. "A List of Polls and Ratable Estate Real & Personal, for the Town of Haverhill in the County of Essex, Taken in the year 1741" "By the running of the new line between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, in 1741, nearly one-third of the population, territory, and property of the town of Haverhill, fell to the north of the line. When to this is added the large portion set off for Methuen, in 1725, we find that more than one-half of its stock of all those elements which combine to make a first class New England town, had been taken from Haverhill within the short period of fifteen years. It was, indeed, a great change in its condition, and prospects, and must have been felt most seriously. "Soon after the State line was run, the town instructed its selectmen to take an exact list of the polls and estates on the north side of the line, which was done. This list contains only those living in that part if town that falls into N Hampshire Province according to Mr. Mitchels Line. 2) pg. 327 signed a petition Mar 1 1748 "NH men who did not qualify to vote in Haverhill. 3) pg. 330 signed complaint on May 25 1748 the selectmen and assessors were neglectful ("wicked & corrupt") and hadn't "cured their great neglect in not valuing the estates and facilities of the inhabitants.

    3. Bill, I am a descendant from the Shadrack "Black Shade" Hancock(a.k.a. Uncle or Grandpa Joe). Shadracks daughter Magaret Amelia Hancock married Mitchel Jones. Mitchel and Margaret Hancock Jones daughter Margaret Caroline "Maggie" Jones married Robert Massey McMillion Sr. They in return had 2 girls and a boy which are all still living. One of their daughters D.L. McMillion Watts Brownlow is my grandmother. L.E. Wattts ,which is the only child out of both marriages of D.L. McMillion, is my father. All of the above named (except for Shadrack and Mitchell) and including me were all born in Florida. Which in turn makes me a 5th generation Floridian and very proud to be part of this line. Puttin my 2 cents in. Take care Leslie Bigbill4@aol.com wrote: > > Kathryn: > Henry William E. 1. Re: [HANCOCK-L] Henry Hancock
    2. Hi, I don't know if this will help or not. This come from the book History of Greene County, Georgia 1786-1886 by Dr. Thaddeus Brockett Rice, 1961 There is a listing of marriages: George Hancock married Elizabeth O'Neal on November 7, 1847, by John W. Reid. (This could be Henry's son) Henry L. Hancock married Katherine Elizabeth Stewart on July 14, 1864 by John O'Neal Henry W. Hancock married Elva Emma Saggus on March 25.1854 by W.A. Overton Greene County is north of Baldwin County, GA Baldwin County was an original Georgia county which was formed when the Creeks ceded their land to the white people on June 16, 1802, at the Oconee River (eastern boundary of the Creeks). It became three counties: Wayne, Baldwin and Wilkinson Counties. In 1803, the land was given out through a Lottery. Each fortunate drawer received 202 1/2 acres on the west side of the Oconee River. Later, Wilkinson County was formed on the eastern side of the Oconee River. This county was formed by bounty land grants from the state of Georgia after the Revolutionary War. (land received for fighting in the Revolution or being a Patriot citizen. Many of these people had come from VA, NC, SC. Georgia did not have enough people in those days, and men were constricted from those states to fight in Georgia during the Revolution. They were promised land in Georgia if they would fight. Many received large sections of land. ) On Dec. 10, 1807, five other counties were formed from Baldwin County, Georgia: Morgan, Randolph (later called Jasper), Jones, Putnam, and Telfair counties. Later, citizens of Washington and Hancock Counties (to the east) petitioned to become part of Baldwin County. In 1804, the town of Mildgeville in Baldwin County became the state capitol of Georgia. It remained the capitol until after the Civil War. I don't know if any of this will help. Sometimes, with county changes information goes to the other county. You could check the other counties to see if you can find your information. Mary Wolfe
