    3. I'm not sure if this is the "Chart 3" you reference, but try: http://www.flash.net/~jwhancoc/bobhop.htm As mentioned I am of this line as follows: Stephen Hancock, 1744-1827 Robert Hancock 1777-1858 Stephen Kavanauagh Hancock 1804-1891 I have a bible circa 1870 of Stephens Kavanaugh's daughter Lavina as well as a picture of her. This bible contains the obituary of Stephens Kavanaugh and lists the vitals of him and his wife Ivy Roberts. I also have the obit of Lavina's sister Frances and her husband Walter O Squires. This bible also details all of the children of Lavina and her husband William Allen Hensley. They were married in Missouiri and moved to Deer Lodge, Montana in 1868. If anyone wants this information let me know offline and I will send it to you...after i transcribe it to electronic form. 2. Ardath- I forgot to mention the info I sent on the two Majors is an update on what I submitted to the Hancock Project several years ago. It is essentially the same but may have some twists. I feel the material I sent this date is the "correct" info. 1. Re: [HANCOCK-L] Children of Major Hancock Jr. & Mary Page
    2. Ardath- I now see where the confusion is. Major 1770 Patrick Co VA had the following children- all born in VA. Daughters: Elizabeth 1794 Sally 1795 Milly 1796 Mary 1802 (my gg-gm) Nancy 1807 Rebecca 1812 Sons Wilson 1797 John 1800 All dates are estimates. Some bvody has copied data and mixed the two majors-- Major 1770 son of John D and Major 1772 son of Major 1739. In addition the use of names Armajor, Major R. and R. Major for the VA/KY Major is confusing. The other problem is that Major 1772 did not sit still. He left Goochland and went to SC, then GA and fortunately left a will and a couple of deeds. "Is anyone researching this line, that has accurate info? " I do not know. I spent several years on it and hope it is accurate but I can tell you that the records are scattered and a lot of detective work is required. The tax records have been the best sources. BobHop This shows how dangerous it is to copy unverifeid data. (I was once crucified on this board for making such a suggestion.) See below BobHop -------- Major 1770 of Patrick Co ! Birth date and place of birth taken from the Rev War Application of Jesse Corn filed by his wife Nancy Hancock Corn., a sister of Major Hancock. (This date agrees with the Census data but another date of 18 July 1760 is incorrectly used by some researchers. ! Major witnessed a will from Lewis Hancock to John Hancock in Henry Co. VA in 1789. Benjamin Hancock was also a witness. He first paid taxes in Patrick Co VA in 1794 and paid continously until 1814. He was not enumerated in the years 1800 or 1810. He was called Major and "Armajor" in the tax records. His father John died in Patrick Co on 10 Nov.,1802 and Major is named in the will. He received land from his fathers' estate in 1809. ! His marriage license was dated 30 Dec., 1793 in Patrick Co. and he married Jeaney Perry Morrow, daughter of Thomas Morrow and Rebecca Small on 2 Jan., 1794. ! Moved to Wayne Co. KY in 1814 and bought 96 acres of land on Otter Creek near Benjamin, Jr and William Hancock (father and son). ! Two Major Hancocks are listed in the 1820 Wayne Co. Census. House # 98 has 2 males (16-26); 1 male over 45 2 females (10-16); 3 females (16-26); 1 female (26-45); 1 female over 45. )Two sons and six dayghters.) Three engaged in Agriculture. House #80 has 2 males (16-26); 1 male over 45 1 female (0-10); 2 females (10-16)l 3 females (16-26); i female over 45. (Two sons and six daughters.) Two engaged in Agricukture. ! In 1830 Census only one Major is listed. 1 male (10-15); 1 male (50-60) 1 female (15-20); 1 female (20-30) ! The listing of two separate men named Major Hancock in 1820 appears to be in error. It seems more likely that Major lived at #98 when a Census was first taken. He then moved to his newly purchased land #80 and another Census was taken. In the interim, two daughters had birthdays and qualified for older age brackets during this time ! In 1818 a Major Hancock of Wayne Co KY gave power-of-attorney to William Hancock of Patrick Co VA to sell land in Patrick Co "where he once lived". (DB 5 p 194 Patrick Co VA, dated 7 Nov 1818), recorded April Court 1819 and witnessed by Christopher Foley, Thomas Vaughn, Matthew Hall and Jesse Corn. This land of 292 acres on Sycamore Creek was sold to Thomas Morrison by William Hancock of Montgomery Co VA on 4 Sept., 1830 (DB 7, p 396 1830). The land sold was adjacent to a plot owned by said William Hancock which was sold to Morrison for $150 in the same transaction. ! Examination of deeds, tax lists and court records show only one individual named Major, Armajor or Major R. In Wayne Co. Major owned and paid taxes on 96 acres of land on Otter Creek from 1815 to 1819. ! In 1820 Major added 50 acres to his holdings in Wayne Co KY. He paid taxes on both plots thereafter. Tax lists were missing for 1822-1823. (In 1824 he is listed as Armajor.) Tax lists for 1826-1827 are missing. In 1827 a Wilson Hancock also paid taxes. ! Major paid on the same land 1827 to 1835. Lists for 1829-1830 were missing. ! Marriage records for several of Major's children appear in Wayne Co until 1835. In this year his son-in-law Daniel Hancock also paid on 100 acres. Both paid in 1836. ! In 1834 an R. Major Hancock married Sarah Rains. (The bride was his cousin Sarah Gwen (Hancock) Rains.) The bondsman was Robert Dabney and they were married by Benjamin Hancock. ! In 1837, R. Major Hancock was made administrator of William Rains' estate of several hundred acres. In 1850 there was a Sarah Hancock age 65 living in Wayne Co and also living in her home were children of two of her daughters from her prior marriage.) ! In 1837 Armajor and "Armajor R" both paid taxes. ("Armajor R." paid on (administrator) his wife's estate which included several hundred acres of land. ! No Major was on the tax lists of 1839, 1840 and 1841. No Major was found in the Census of 1840. (The name "Harmon" Hancock appears for the first (and last time) in this Census. However the only Harmon Hancock listed in all (States)1830 was also listed in the 1840 Census of Pitt Co NC, and that is where Harmon died. Thus the Wayne Co Census is again in error. Closer examination of the original Census shows the name to be "Armajor") The ages of occupants in 1840 in the Wayne Co. "Harmon" Hancock home appear to be Armajor and Sarah with members of her Rains family.) ! In 1842 Major was declared exempt from taxes. (He was then 72.) ! It appears Major left Wayne Co about 1844. His land was sold by a Major R. to a John Hancock in 1849. This John is in the 1850 Wayne Census and is most likely Major's son who had lived in TN for several years after 1830. ! No Major Hancock appears in the Wayne Co KY Census of 1850 but Wilson Hancock appears in Hamilton Co IL. ! The Rev War Pension Application From Franklin Co. TN (page 14-16) abstracted by Charles A. Sherrill (1982) published privately concerns Jesse Corn, Major's brother-in-law and states the following: ! 13 Jan 1846 - Clinton Co, KY - William Morrison, Sr., (formerly of Patrick Co. VA) states that he... "is a brother-in-law of Armajor Handcock who is a brother of Nancy Corn" ... and that he ..."married Nanny Morrow and Handcock married Jane Morrow, both daughters of Thomas Morrow" .... he "moved from Virginia to Kentucky about 40 years ago. Armajor Handcock settled near him about 10 years later in Wayne County, KY and they lived near each other until Handcock moved away about 20 years later ... ( Morrison lives in the near edge of Wayne County ....") ! 28 Nov 1849 - Albany, KY - ..."R.Major Hancock (his signature) of Wayne County, KY, states he was born 18 July 1770 in Fluvanna County, VA. He is 8 years younger than his sister. He remembers Jesse Corn coming to see his sister Nancy before the war. He did not see their marriage but saw them ride off with several other persons and when they returned they had been married ..." he .."moved from Patrick County, VA to Wayne County, KY in 1814 and is currently visiting his children in Clinton County ..." ! 11 March 1850 - Clinton County, KY - "William J. Dabney of Albany states that he was raised within three miles of the houses of R.Major Hancock and William Morrison". ! 12 August 1850 - Clinton County, KY - "John M. Davis, acting sheriff, has known William Morrison and R.Major Handcock since his earliest recollection." ! [It is interesting to note that Mary Hancock, youngest dau. of John & Elizabeth (Maddox) Hancock, married a James Nathan Morrison in Patrick Co. VA ... Mary is Major's sister and James is a brother of William Morrison.] ! Armajor is listed in the tax/tithe tables of Wayne Co in 1852 and again in 1853. He has no land at this time. ! Armajor Hancock, age 90, a "laboror" is listed in the home of Robert and Nancy Dabney (his daughter) in Wayne Co. KY in 1860. Armajor is also listed in the tax/tithe tables of 1860. Note Robert was bondsman in the wedding of Major and Sarah. -------------- Major 1772 of Goochland ! Major's birthdate is taken from the "Douglas Register" and his marriage date from a book by Kathleen William "Goochland Co. Marriages". Major and wife moved from Goochland Co. to Spartanburg Co. SC 1807. This is proved by a deed he signed to Anderson Page (brother-in-law) filed in Goochland Co. The deed bears a note "Major Hancock of Carolina" ! They were enumerated in Spartanburg in 1810- having: two females 0-10, one female 10-16, one female 26-45. (This Census copy was very difficult to read and was thought to have shown a male child. Subsequent copies of the 1810 Census did not show any male children) ! In 1820 Spartanburg there is: one male over 45; two females 0-10, one female 15-20 and one female 30-40. ! In 1830 Spartanburg there is one male 50-60, one female 15-20 and one female 30-40. ! The family moved to Hall Co GA before 1840. This period is when Donald Page author of "History and Genealogy of Robert and Rachel Page Family" suggests wife Mary had died and Major had married her cousin Elizabeth Page, daughter of Robert Page. ! In Hall Co. GA i840 Census there is: one male 70-80, one female 5-10, one female 60-70. died in Hall Co. GA in 1850. See "History & Genealogy of of Robert and Rachel Page Family by Donald Page. ! Major's will was filed in Hall Co. on 31 Nov., 1845 and proved 1 Sept., 1851. The will mentions his wife Elizabeth, daughter Nancy Hancock to have 1/2 of his lot, daughter Mahala Gamblin, daughter Elizabeth Wechel, daughter Matilda Umpheries, daughter Parmela Truelove and granddaughter Nancy Matilda Hancock the daughter of Parmela Truelove. 1. Re: [HANCOCK-L] Children of Major Hancock Jr. & Mary Page
    2. I see a possible answer (which is also incorrect). Major Hancock 1770 moved from Patrick Co VA to Wayne Co KY. He was also known as Armajor and R. Major in the KY records. He married twice and his second marriage to his cousin Sarah (Hancock) Raines could indicate a birthdate of "about 1803". In this marriage he is listed as R. Major. (This actually provides three people but actuality it is only one.) This is rather far fetched but the story on the Majors has been completely miscontrued for many years. The second wife was Elizabeyh Page, a cousin. After Mary died Elizabeth (d/o Robert) married Major in 1830. I do not know of a Major b 1803? Anywhere. Major 1772 married and moved to SC in 1807. He lived in Spartanburgh untill 1840 when re moved to Hall Co GA. He left a will in Hall Co and died there but named his children. Many researchers have the "Majors" confused.
