Bob, I am working my way through your Third Generation. I forgot to tell you that you were the only one who replied to my query about Richard. Right now I have come to Nancy Hancock who was born abt. 1800 in Patrick Co. VA. She married Jerry Turner. I found IGI films # 214446, #1985712, & #1985472. They give his name as Jermiah Turner, and the marriage as 15 Feb. 1820 in Wilson Co. TN. Do you have this info? I can't remember but I think the Ancestral File had children listed. I don't trust the Ancestral File until I check it out, so I don't have the children, if there were any. I know you are doing some upgrading on your site, but since I have printed your Chart #3 out, I am checking against what I have, and what is on the IGI, and occasionally the Ancestral File. As I go through your chart, I will ask questions, or let you know what I have if it is different, and if there is confirmation with the IGI. I don't have much else to go on. Thanks again, Bob. Also, Helen, if you have something that doesn't agree, please feel free to jump in. Let's get this stuff straight. Anyone else, let's get at it!!! Ardath
Just FYI...there are some shipwrights on the Index to Cheshire Wills. I ran across a list of the London Company folks and didn't find any Hancocks. I didn't make a note of the URL (since there weren't any Hancocks on it), but it should be easy enough to find with a web search. >>This index includes all the wills 1492-1857 proved at the Chester diocesan consistory court and now held at the Cheshire Record Office >> http://www.fhsc.org.uk/wills/han-har.htm

Just found my husband's great-grandmother's maiden name. She was Catherine Gardner Hancock. Her parents names are in the subject line. There has been research done on the ancestors' lines, but can find little on Wm and Mary Ann, except that William died in 1836 at the age of 28 and Mary Ann married in 1839 an Alvan Wentworth Chapman. Both William and Alvan were physicians. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Shirley Davis Warren

Bob: Are you saying that the children I listed, Elizabeth, Milly, Rebecca, Sally, and Mary (Polly), were children of Sarah's, and listed under Hancock, instead of Rains? That would explain a ton of misinformation it that is correct. Do you know the name of Sarah's husband ____ Rains? You may felt you were long winded, but at least it is now clear. Thanks. Ardath

The one born 1783 could not have been born in Patrick which was created in 1790. Mary Polly Adams was d/o John Adams and Mary Cooper. She a sister to Joshua Adams. Mary first married Christoher Cooper. Please treat these answers carefully. I have not verified them. Elizabeth, Sarah, Milly, Wilson, John, Mary, Nancy and Rebecca. Sarah Gwem Hancock married William Rains 2 Mar 1809 and he died 1832/34. They had children -- Keziah, Benjamin, Rhoades, Comfort. Newman, Margaret and Amelia. Sarah and Major were rather old when married in1835. In 1840 Census "Harman" Hancock had Comfort age 21, Margaret age 18, "Amy" age 10 and Newman age 17 living in their home. All of Major's children were married by 1835 when Major % Sarah married so Major ("Harman") just moved in Sarah's house? If this is what happened, then all children of both families and "Harmon's" appearance and disappeance, etc are explained. Hi Bob, I am still confused - what is new? Who were the parents and dates of birth if not correct of the following: Elizabeth - 1795 Milly - 1797 Rebecca - 1799-1810 Sally 1801 Mary (Polly) 13 apr. 1802 Major R. Hancock - 1803 The IGI - Film # 1985264, has him as a child of Mary Page and Major Hancock. This is obviously erroneous, but what family do they belong in? Ardath

Major 1770 also had sons Wilson and John. (I have no proof on John.) Major 1770 was aka ARMAJOR, R. MAJOR and MAJOR R. In the Wayne Co and Clinton records he may be any of the three or all three on the same document. Now- where the confusion really is -- his wife died bef 1830. He married his widowed cousin Sarah Gwen (Hancock) Rains (d/o Benjamin 1740). The certificate had him Major R. or R. Major. (I have it somewhere in my files.) One of the two male children in Major 1770 family ( John) is never named ANYWHERE. So to our friendly "researchers of old"-- Major R married young Sally Rains. Eureka!! The problem is solved. The tax rolls even help. Sarah had several hundred acres and Major 1770 paid taxes on his old and his new propery and this made two people. The Census helped here. In 1820 there are two Major Hancocks. In 1830 there is one Major Hancock. In 1840 there was no Major of any spelling so researchers said Major 1770 was dead and Major R was gone. But a new Hancock b y the name of Harmon appeared. (First and last time a Harmon was in KY.) The indices clearly said HARMON. The original film said ARmajor. And the people living in the home of Harmon were children of Sarah Gwen, a widow. This did not become clear untill the 1850 Census. But Major 1770 came back to life in Jesse Corn's pension application and he was visiting daughters in 1850. In 1860 he was in Clinton Co listed as a laborer age 90. Sorry to be so long winded but puttng the Majors together has been a lot of fun and few people beleive it! But the records are all there . I found the marriage of John Hancock & Mary Elizabeth Witt on a FTM CD, Sec. IV, Ch. 42. It gives the date of their marriage as 9 Feb. 1804 in Patrick Co. VA. I believe they stayed in VA. John was the son of Benjamin Hancock and Nancy Corn. I also have the following children of John and Mary Elizabeth Hancock: Lewis D. 1812 Benjamin 1814 Martha S. 1816 Charles abt. 1817 John Witt 20 Oct 1818 Peter G. 1820 Is anyone on the list researching this family, and can confirm this is correct?
