This is the line I am attempting to orove back to Augustine Hancock. Any help in tracing ancestors of Robert b 1711 back to Robert, b. about 1679 would be most appreciated. If you are interested, I will send you the line, that I'm trying to prove, back to Augustine. Bill Felknor billf2k@yahoo.com ------------------------- The Hancock Family is believed to have originated in England. Our earliest known Hancock ancestor in America was a Robert Hancock, b 1711, who married an Elizabeth. There was a son, Robert Hancock, born on March 6, 1753(1755), in Virginia. No other details, or information about other children, is known. Robert Hancock, born 03/06/1753 in Virginia, married Sarah. There was a son, Clement Hancock, born circa 1770-1780, in Virginia. No other details, or information about other children, is known. Clement Hancock, born circa 1770-1780 in Virginia, married Ann, born June, 1780. Sometime before 1820, the family moved to Athens, Limestone County, Alabama. It is not known why the move, or if the family lived in any other areas before arriving in Alabama. It was there, a son, Benjamin Hancock, was born January 9, 1820, in Limestone County, Alabama. Clement died about December, 1847, at Athens, Limestone County, Alabama . Sometime later, Ann moved to Houston County, near Crockett, Texas, most likely with their son Benjamin's family. Benjaminb and Balsora Hancock moved to Texas in 1856. Ann died 05/29/1864 in Houston County Texas. No other details, or information about other children is known. She is buried in the Arledge and Jones Cemetery. Both Benjamin and Richard Clement Hancock fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. Benjamin, born 01/09/1820, married a Balsora Andrews on 02/21/1844. Balsora was born in March of 1825, in Limestone County, Alabama. Their son, Richard Clem Hancock, was born on 05/16/1846 in Limestone County, Alabama. Richard died 04/20/1916 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Richard married Martha Matilda White, born 07/24/1856, probably at Crockett, Houston County, Texas. Martha died on 07/24/1925 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Benjamin died 12/19/1901, at Crockett, Houston County, Texas. Balsora died 02/11/1904 at Crockett, Houston County, Texas . Richard and Matilda had a total of 11 Children.
Does anyone have any information about Augustine Hancock (son of the 1st William) and his descendents. Any help would be appreciated. Bill Felknor billf2k@yahoo.com
Thanks to Donna & others. Got the address - will check it out soon. Thanks again, Alan
Hello...I have just finished a book about Pioneers of Medina Co. Ohio with all surnames beginning with "H" from mid 1800's to early 1900's and would be glad to do a free look up to see if your family is mentioned in this book. I have created a format that I believe will help anyone searching for their family..I have combined: Newspaper articles, marriages, deaths, mini bio's, court records, cemetery records and more....all with the surname in Bold print for easy searching. I was tired of buying a lot of books that had so much that didn't help me and thought if I'm tired of wasting money so will others. While I am bound by certain rules by my publisher I can do free look ups and if your family is mentioned I can let you know the print date and the cost of the book. (As well I am already working on "M" surnames and will go to A-Z before I'm done). Thank you for your time and let me know if I can be of help. At the Weakley County Library I found indexes to the 1840 census for Tennessee. the 1860 census for Tn, 1870 census for Tn.1830 census for Tn. Early West Tn marriages by Bride and by Groom. and Tennessee Mortality Schedules 1850-1880. The lists of Hancocks are long. If you need details about anyone, please reply. I found that my gg grandfather Harrison Hancock married Mariah Collins in 1855 in Obion Co. He is listed in the census in 1860 in Weakley Co. His oldest son was born before the marriage, probably the child of a first marriage and they had a 6 month old son names George. I went through all the deed books 1825-1898. No Hancock's owned property in Weakley County during these years. He worked as a cooper according to the census. A cooper builds barrels unless someone knows something else. The mortality schedule says George Hancock dies at 1 yr in Maury county Tn. (1860) So they moved. Later they had to come back north as his son settled in western Ky near the Tn line. I found more info that might help someone. In Weakley County cemeteries Vol II by James Buckley, NSDAR I found Hancock, Zimri Dec. 6 1835-Feb 10, 1908 Hancock, Dersey (?) died August 25, 1906 age 19 yr 4 m. Weakley Co. Hancock and Dawson Hancock. If you want, I'll send you more info about these people. The Story Tellers... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying 'I can't let this happen'. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. Sue, Please contact me by E-mail, bqueen@compusmart.ab.ca I found I have so many notes from several people, and have compared them. I will pass all of it on to you. The first (I) Major Hancock, I have been told "MAY" have been given his mother's maiden name. His mother was Jane, but no one has been able to confirm her maiden name, and it is possible it was Major, but this is ONLY speculation. This Major, son of Benjamina and Jane, was born 1742 in Fluvanna, VA. and died in Clay Co. MO. in 1839. He was almost 100 yrs. old. His SON, (2) Major was born 8 Feb. 1772 in Goochland, VA, and died in 1850, in Hall County, Georgia. Major (2) married Mary Page, and then moved to South Carolina. When she died, he married her cousin, Elizabeth Page. They later moved to Hall, Georgia, where he died leaving a will that named his children. Major (1) had an older brother John D. Hancock who married Elizabeth Maddox. They had a son whom they called Major (3). He was born 18 july 1770 in Fluvanna, VA and died after 1850 in Clinton, Kentucky. None of this Major's children were named after him, but Benjamin, the eldest son of John D. Hancock, and a brother to this Major (1770) named one of his sons Major (4). He was born 13 Mar 1792 in Patrick Co. VA. It is one of the areas of confusion. In his own Bio, he said he married Elizabeth Fuson in Oct. 1814, and left for Ohio arriving a month later. He lived and died in OH. and was a minister. The confusion seems to be with the Major born in 1770. It appears to me that when the census was taken he was living in one place with his family, but had just acquired new land. By the time the census taker got to his new land, he had moved onto it, and his daughters had moved up another age bracket making it appear that there were 2 different Major Hancocks in that area. It tooks months to take the census in those days. It is also good to remember the British accent in this case. A common English expression is "Our". My uncle was referred to as "Our Bob". In this case he could have been referred to as Our Major, but it was written as Armajor or R. Major, especially if someone else gave the census taker the information. If you want all the notes on these Major Hancocks, I can send you a genealogy report, giving you the IGI Film numbers for sources. I don't know if you are thoroughly confused or not, but I tried! <G> Ardath ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue" <sue@ziggycom.net> To: <HANCOCK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2001 6:33 PM Subject: Re: [HANCOCK-L] Major Hancock, Sr. > Ardath, I have Major, Sr. b.
