    1. [HANCOCK-L] Andrew W. Hancock
    2. Ardath Buckaway
    3. Is there anyone on this list who has the correct info on Andrew W. Hancock. The IGI lists 2 Andrew W. Hancocks both born in 1811, one in March, and one in August. Some claim his name as Andrew William Hancock, and the other is Andrew White Hancock. It is possible both are the same person, with the birth in March and the christening in August. There is an Andrew W. who married Amelia Yeargin ( spelt a number of different ways), and an Andrew W. who married Elizabeth Clayburn Hancock. This could also be the same Andrew W. Hancock since the marriage to Amelia was about 1832 and the marriage to Elizabeth was in 1854. Anyone have proof or can send me in the right direction? Ardath

    1. Re: [HANCOCK-L] Robert Hancock and wife Margaret (RESEND)
    2. Arvil and Jim, thank you for all the work that you have done on William, Simon , etc. If by any chance you come on proof that John is related please let me know. I am referring to John born in Chesterfield County, VA in 1735. I know that he had sons named Simon, William, Thomas, Peter, and John. There is still hope. I keep saying the information is out there, we just don't know where. Case in point. I discovered this week that most of Georgia's Colonial records were removed from Savannah, the capitol, during the Revolutionary war because the patriots thought that the British would destroy them. Those records went to Charleston, SC, New Bern, NC, Pennsylvania, Maryland and possibly to London to a person who was a patriotic supporter. I don't know whether those records ever got back to GA and if they did where are they? I had always had a question about why my Hancocks were in New Bern NC. That was off the trail for them coming to SC, and GA. When I found out that information it explained the New Bern Wills of my Hancocks, Marshalls, and Carters who probably never lived there. They were not NC wills but GA wills. I am willingly to say that if the locations mentioned in those wills could be checked that the lands would be in GA. Also, Every time that I go to my local library, there is new information on my families that I have never read before. Someone has investigated the facts and written a book. I have also found some very interesting old maps that I have downloaded. These maps all show that Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia stretched from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River. I knew that Georgia had done that but did not know the other states had done so. These maps seem to very accurate for the most part. Many are in French. Most are in English. A few have a hand written note that said that they were located in London. The indian trading paths were marked on most of the maps. My families had come down an old indian trading path to Georgia. I suspect that many peoples came to other states that way. Also, in Georgia, the boundary lines for counties changed almost yearly for about 12-15 years. Persons in one county this year might be in another county next year. No wonder we can't find these people that we in the 21st century are now looking for. I lucked up this week while working on my father's family who also came from VA to GA, and found that they had been GA just after the Revolutionary War. I had thought they had come much later. The three brothers came because land was given to them for being soldiers in the War. Their father was left behind in VA to be a citizen patriot and take care of the neighboring women whose husbands were at war. Well, he died in 1789. They probably had to go back to VA to settle his estate and they come back to GA at the later time that I had always known about. Again, thank you for all that you do to help us all find our long since gone relatives. Mary Wolfe

    2. In a message dated 8/3/01 3:52:07 PM, HANSER5@aol.com writes: << Letâ ™s continue the research and the good discussions! Jim Hancock >> Dear Cousin Jim: You have some very compelling evidence that would seem to establish that Robert, Edward, William, George, Thomas, and Jushua - sons of Robert - were descendants of Simon rather than his brother Augustine. I think you are probably right. I am convinced enough that my database has been changed to agree with yours. But I think we need to continue to search for the smoking gun. In the meantime, I accept your version as being the most likely. There is so much that we don't know. So many things that we can't prove. Just to continue the discussions, as you request, I can certainly share some thoughts. No proof; no strong convictions; just thoughts. Let's analyze carefully the quotation from the Bible to see if we have been misreading or misinterpreting something. From "The Johnstons of Salisbury", page 183: "In ye year 1620 William Hancock in search for Forrest for his building of ships, embarked for ye plantations, being one of ye company owners thereof, leaving his familye in England; on ye 22nd of March, 1622 he, with others, was massacred by ye salvages at Thorpe's House, Berkeley Hundred, fifty miles from Charles City." "In 1630, Augustin, son and heir of William, came to Virginia to claim the estate, and died, leaving children, Robert, William, Sarah and Ruth. William, born 1631, died 1672, leaving sons George, born 1658; Jubal, 1660, Jubal killed by Indians at 'Jinto.' George died leaving one child Robert, born 1679, died 1732. Robert left children, Robert, born 1711; he was ancestor of Col. William Hancock of Bedford County, Virginia; Edward, born 1713 died young ------" First off, I have always been bothered by the statement that Augustin came to Virginia in 1630 to 'claim the estate.' Based on the number of shares in the Company that William owned, he should have had a grant of about 500 acres. But if William died in 1622, there would have been no estate in Virginia in 1630. When men died, as so many did, or if they did not "take up" their grant within a couple of years, the Crown would take back the land and grant it to somebody else. On the other hand, William would have had a substantial estate in England that should have been probated following his death in 1622. Many years ago I hired a prominent professional genealogist in England to find the will and estate settlement. He found none. Some Hancock researchers claim that William was a son of Thomas Hancock and Agnes Nickolls and that he married Susan Poynter 26 Sep 1604 in London. It's a neat fit. But my researcher found that the William who married Susan Poynter was still living in England after 1622. The name Augustin, or Augustine, does not appear in any early Virginia records that I have seen. As the eldest son, he should have had a sizeable inheritance in England and should have been a purchaser of land in Virginia. Did he return to England after he learned that there was no estate in Virginia? The owner of the Bible was, supposedly, Simon Hancock (1717-1791), son of Samuel and Johan. I'm convinced that the early part of the record was copied from an older Bible. At what point does the older account end and the newer entry begin? The latter part must have been the writing of Simon. He says "George died leaving one child Robert, born 1679, died 1732. Robert left children, Robert, born 1711; he was ancestor of Col. William Hancock of Bedford County, Virginia." He can't mean that Robert (1711) was the ancestor of Col. William since Col. William was born 30 May 1720. He must be talking about Robert (1679-1732) but you are convinced that Robert was not a son of George but rather a son of Robert Hancock and Johan Ligon. How could Simon have been mistaken if he was talking about his cousin and contemporary? I have other reservations and concerns, but won't muddy the water any further for now. Regards, Arvil

    1. [HANCOCK-L] Robert Hancock and wife Margaret (RESEND)
    2. Hello list: ANOTHER HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ARVIL!!! Arvil, I hope you know just how much many of us appreciate your work, and especially your continued involvement in Hancock research. As I have told you, without your work I would probably still be out there roaming the Virginia hills looking for my Hancocks. Your the best! >From the Randolph-Macon college's website:  "The college's roots go back more than a century and a half to its founding by Methodists in 1830. Randolph-Macon's first campus was in Boydton, Virginia, near the border with North Carolina. The destruction of railways during the Civil War made the site inaccessible, and in 1868 the college moved to its present campus in Ashland, Virginia." If I may, I would like to present a few additional points on the matter of Robert and Margaret Hancock, which may be relevant to this case. Please know that my intentions are not to discredit any former/current Hancock researchers, whom I hold in high regard. Consider: 1). Margaret Hancock of Henrico and Chesterfield counties, Virginia, made a number of land transactions from 1747-1751, associating her with men named William, George, Joshua, and Thomas Hancock. And various land transactions were made in that same time period and in those same counties among Robert, William, George, and Joshua. In  1750 Margaret deeded property to Joshua (both parties of Chesterfield Co). And in 1751 Margaret and Joshua deeded property to George of Chest Co.; and to Robert of Chest. Co.  It appears she decided to give her land to her children rather than later devising the property to them by will. 2). This leads us to Robert Hancock, whose wife was named Margaret, given in Adventurers of Purse and Person. He was a son of Robert and Johan (Ligon) Hancock. Robert Hancock, son of Robert and Johan, was living in 1729. His family resided in Henrico County, Virginia. The time frame and location fit well. 3). According to such secondary sources as "The Johnstons of Salisbury, with a Brief Supplement Concerning the Hancock, Strother and Preston Families" (1897), by William Preston Johnston, the Bible (unfortunately) does not name Robert Hancock's wife, but lists his sons as Robert, Edward, William, George, Thomas, and Joshua. (Note: As shown above the names Robert, William, George and Joshua appear in the deed records). 4). We also have Mary Jones as the wife of George Hancock. Mary Jones was the daughter of Rice and Frances (Bowman) Jones. See in part, the Will of Mary's mother, Frances Jones, in WB 1 P 237 (24 May 1752), Chesterfield Co., Va.: "To daughter Mary Hancock, 1 negro…" This connects the family of Mary, George’s wife, to Chesterfield Co. and in the same time period as the deed transfers above. All the above evidence, I think, leads us to Robert and Margaret (unknown) Hancock as having been the probable parents of the children named in the Bible. But there are other reasons for believing this: 5).  If the ancestral lines of brothers, Robert (b 1711) and George (1724-1782), et al, did go through Augustine, son of William (b ca 1580), then Simon (1717-1791), whom (we think may have) had the Bible, and Robert & George (above) et al, would have been 3rd cousins once removed. If however, the line went instead through Simon, son of William (b ca 1580), then Simon (who had the Bible) and Robert & George (above) et al, would have been first cousins. One would think that the Bible info would have more likely come from the nearer relatives. 6). No attempt is being made here to discredit the whole of the Bible record, nor is that necessary. But with the recently discussed evidence of the land transactions I do think that maybe some of the Bible material was simply copied down wrong. If that info were copied from other Bibles, say from those owned by Simon’s father, and/or his grandfather, then it is possible that this portion was copied wrong. This does not discredit the whole of the Bible record. It seems wise to hold to the Bible record except where other compelling evidence seems to contradicts any of its parts. So, unless/until other parts are brought into question, the rest of the Bible record can be considered reliable. Note that the earliest info on William Hancock, (b. ca 1580), supposedly in the Bible, has long been substantiated. That is, a William Hancock is clearly shown as an adventurer in the Virginia Company. Also, if this new alignment is correct, it substantiates the portion of the Bible record in which the names the children of Robert Hancock are given. It's hard to imagine just how someone would have gotten that kind of info if it were not true. And apparently many older researchers believed firmly in the Bible’s existence and reliability. But, regardless of that, I know of no lineage society, which will accept a Bible record as legitimate without producing the Bible. Maybe we can somehow track it down, or else get more info from one of the earlier secondary sources which referred to it. 7). Another reason for making the change is the lack of Virginia county records relative to Augustine, son of William (b ca 1580), on down to George (1658-1682). One would think that there would be something more there to indicate their presence. While there may be some other records, which were lost by fire, etc., we just don't have them now...that I am aware of. We do, however, have some pretty good evidence supporting the possibility/likelihood that the people named in the (supposed) Bible were the children of Robert and Margaret Hancock. We would probably do well to concentrate our research along those lines, and see where it leads. I think we’re all seeking the truth. For me, until something more compelling arises, I will show the "new" alignment.   Let’s continue the research and the good discussions! Jim Hancock

They had 8 children according to what I have been told. I am having problems with the Vickerys that married into the Hancock line. Two of Benjamin and Sarah's seemed to have married Vickery sisters. William B. Hancock, born 18 July 1771, married Sarah Vickery in Wayne Co. KY. Does anyone have a date of her birth, or of their marriage. Benjamin Hancock, born 1778, a brother to William B. Hancock, married Elizabeth Vickery on 10 Dec. 1820 in Wayne Co. KY. My 3rd problem is with a Sarah Hancock, born 9 Jan. 1813 in Wayne Co. who married a William Vickery on 10 Aug. 1833. Does anyone know who her parents were, and who were William Vickery's parents, or his birthdate, and place. I was playing around in my program, and trying to correct some errors, and I guess, I lost the parents of Sarah. Thanks for any help. Ardath

    3. This is in response to the Hancocks in Talbot and Upson counties (Georgia). I have been searching for several years for the following GG grandmother: Malinda Hancock married Phillip Cato in Talbot County Georgia in 1848. Malinda Hancock was born in Georgia abt 1829. Later she was in Upson County and there she applied for a widow's pension (CSA) in Upson County. One of her sons, Hartwell Jackson Cato is my great grandfather who married Vallie Green in Pike County (Now Lamar County, Ga). I can find nothing on this grandparent....any help would give me a missing link. Barbara Thurmond barbarathurmond@remax.net
