I have used a number of genealogy programs, including Ancestral Quest, Family Tree Maker, PAF and several others. I chose PAF5 for the following reasons: 1) Many of these software companies will not be in business a few years from now (some of them probably will not be in business a few days from now). No one can sell millions of genealogy software programs. 2) You can transfer data between the software but you will create many errors. I have personally spent hundreds of hours straightening up the errors created by the last transfer. 3) The LDS Church is likely to be around for a long time and is likely to maintain their software. 4) The price for PAF5 is attractive (it is free). 5) PAF5 is a very good genealogy software. Marion Francis, known as "the Swamp Fox" was a General during the Rev War. Many of my ancestors and relatives served under him and they, at that time lived in SC, NC and GA. I am surprised the name would be used by northerners? BobHop
I have letters and photographs of Ivo Lavelle Hancock 1881-1964 and his son Ivy. Son of Samuel Hancock and Eleanora O'Bryan. I will share them with any interested family descendents. Thank you very much Jean, for all your thoughts and ideas. My connection to this family is through their daughter Dicy. Reflecting on your comments, the scenarios you present certainly make sense and any one or more of them may have occurred. In thinking about it now, I agree that it would be very unlikely that Nancy were literate. I know that even her daughter Mary was illiterate. In fact, Mary recognised her shortcoming, and sponsored the Womans College that was named after her, because she wanted young women to have learning opportunities which was previously unavailable. Back to the bible though, I still would like to try to learn of its disposition. So now with the help of the insights you've shared, as well as your good wishes, I'll continue looking. Thanks again Jean, Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com/
>From a paper dated 9/28/1954 probably Ky. New Era since I have it photo copied. "Mrs Ollie Hancock Dies At Evansville" Mrs Ollie Hancock, 74-year old resident of Evansville (Ind.) and formerly of Fairview (KY.), died this morning at Welborn Hospital at Evansville following a brief illness. She had been ill only a few days following a heart attack. The body will be brought to the Wood, Fuqua & Davis Funeral Home (This is in Hopkinsville, Ky) tonight where it will rest until the services. Final arrangements had not been completed this afternoon. A native of Christian County, Mrs. Hancock had made her home in Evansville with her son Threil Hancock, since the death of her husband in 1936. (He was called "Jessie" but I believe his name was James Monroe Hancock Jr. and he was killed by his sister's son) In addition to her son with whom she lived, Mrs. Hancock is survived by three other children, Gus Hancock of Delray Beach, Fla., Mrs Wilton Taylor of Fairview, and Larry Hancock of Lexington, Ind., and 6 grandchildren. She also leaves a brother, Denton Major of the county(Christian) and a number of nieces and nephews. The notes in ( ) were added by me from other facts I know. This lady was wife to my Great-Uncle Jessie.(my grandmother's brother) Ollie was almost killed when her husband was, but she pulled through. Rena Wells rwells@apex.net
what info do you have on a Francis Marion, who's grandfather was a Rev Daniel Hancock who lived in Snow Hill MD. I have hit a brick wall trying to find any trace of his (Daniel's) parents or siblings. I live in VA, so have made the treck to Maryland Archives numerous times and to Snow Hill a couple of times with no luck on the ancestry. I have found land records up the Kazoo, but it stops there. If you could shed any light on this issue I would be deeply grateful. As always, if any of my info is of interest to you, let me know. Thanks
my great grandfather's name is Francis Marion Hancock. He was son of Elisha Hancock and was born 1839 in Ripley County IN. He served in the civil war. I have military records and pension records. His wife's name was Mary Conn. He died in 1921. I realize we may be talking about two different Francis Marion's here, but what a coincidence!! Apparently Francis Marion was an entertainer of some repute, hence the potential popularity of the name. However, I would like to pursue this with you, in the eventuality that we have some common ancestry. In particular, I'm trying (with little luck) to find ancestors of Rev Daniel Hancock, my Francis Marion's grandfather, who lived in Snow Hill MD - died around 1810 wherein his wife and 18 other family members made the treck thru Pittsburgh and down the Ohio River to Indiana. I have lots of proof from him to me, but for the life of me I can't pick up the trail of where he came from or parents/siblings. I live in Northern VA, so have gone to Snow Hill a couple of times and have researched in the Maryland Archives extensively. I have land records, etc. but no luck beyond that. If you have any connections here, I would be forever in your debt and would gladly share whatever I have with you. Write soon and thank you.
Hi, everyone, Someone was looking for information on William Hancock (Rev. War) of Springfield, MA. I have a little information on him, if you would like to contact me. I tried finding the thread in the archives, without success. Bonnie
Hi Julia, I agree with you that Mary did not have any children---according to my notes. As for the dates, as I said, I did not do the original research myself so I just posted what I have gotten from other Corn researchers. I will always yield to family line researchers when I have not actually seen the documents. I would love to have the corrected dates when you have some time to send them to me. I did put in my notes section where I got the info so future researchers would know that they may be subject to change. I have a few that are slightly different. I don't think that Mary Corn with whom her mother was living at her death, had any children. So she couldn't have handed the bible down to a child. I will check her will to see if it is mentioned. She is the one who founded Sharp's College for Women in Winchester, TN, and at her death she freed her slaves and paid for their transport to Liberia. BTW, my husband is descended from Margaret (Peggy) SHARP, sister to the four who married CORNs.
