    1. Re: [HANCOCK-L] Lewis "Ross" Hancock
    2. Jean- Thank you for the message on LEWIS Hancock. I agree with you on "Lewis Ross". I think that is not the name of the Lewis, s/o Benjamin and Nancy Corn Hancock but there was definitely a younger Lewis Ross. The will of Samuel in Wilson Co (Arvil's gx-gf) was awarded to "Samuel lewis" and this award led to "Samuel Lewis" becoming the name of Lewis, Major's son. (Nothing unusual here-- we could even invent another Major.) Everybody seems to have the same records but different interpetations. bobHop Visit our home page http://mx4.xoom.com/bhop1 Major family names- Abel, Adams, Anders, Bellisfield, Brock, Byers, Davis, Dement, Field, Guffey, Hancock, Hockaday, Hopkins, Irvine, McClanahan, Scarbrough, Shipley, Strother, Stonestreet, Wade, Wampler, Westlake

    3. Hi Bob, I noticed that you added the "Ross" to Lewis Hancock's name. So far, no one has ever been able to show that Lewis had a middle name of "Ross"---at least as far as I know. Lewis and Frances Frankye Adams Hancock did name one of their sons Lewis Ross Hancock b. May 25, 1829 in Wilson Co., TN; d. May 21, 1893 in Limestone Co., TX where he is buried in the Hancock Family Cemetery. He was md. to Mary UNK who is also buried in the same cemetery. Lewis and Frankye also had a grandson named Lewis Ross who was the son of their son, Charles Jackson. Wish I could help you with your quest for the other Lewis Hancock. The Lewis in Greene Co TN is the one I am looking for. He is not Samuel Lewis OR the one who married Frankey Adams (who was a son of Benjamin and nancy Corn.). Samuel Lewis is a Wilson Co Hancock and of course Lewis "Ross" married Frankey. I think Lewis died before 1820 in TN and perhaps did not leave a family? 3. Does anybody have any information on Lewis Hancock? Bob, I have Samuel Lewis as the son of Major and Mary. I looked on Ancestry and found both Major and Lewis in Green Co., TN on the 1812 census. I also found where a Lewis Hancock m. Franky Adams on 21 Jan 1811 in Wilson Co., TN. Sue

    2. Does anybody have any information on Lewis Hancock? He was born in Goochland Co VA , 8 Sep 1782. His parents were Major Hancock 1742-1839 and Mary (Moreland) Hancock (2nd wife of Major). In 1810 both Major and Lewis are found in Greene Co TN. Major and several sons left TN to move to MO in 1820. Lewis was not one of these sons. Lewis does not appear in later Census lists of TN. He has been confused with Samuel Lewis, Lewis Ross and Lewis, son of Benjamin Hancock. Any help appreciated. 3. Kelsey, The Document date of 1852 - do you mean 1752? I note that the recorded date is 1753. Or is this date referring to something else? Why do you think the maiden name would be Watson? Why not the Wilson? I ask since Wilson shows up as a middle name in my Hancock line. This is a guess but I think that Mr. Watson is probably an attorney or official that sworn the signatories of the document in front of a recorder or court clerk, particularly since he also acted as a witness. Deeds were typically prepared by attorneys. 3. Cleveland Necrology Index Researchers with ancestors in the Cleveland, Ohio, area will be interested in the Cleveland Necrology File, a new online database of Cleveland area obituaries from the mid-1800s through 1975. Hosted by the Cleveland Public Library at http://www.cpl.org, the database is fully searchable and contains newspaper obituary information in the form of name, date, newspaper source, and a summary of the important facts from the death notice (spouse, survivors, funeral arrangements). A reference to the microfilm reel number on which the obituary file is contained is also provided. The database was produced from a microfilmed copy of an alphabetical card file containing local cemetery records and newspaper death notices gathered by the staff of the Cleveland Public Library. - George G. 2. This is not a genealogy question, but it suddenly occurred to me that It might work. My husband, Richard, is looking for people that served in the US Army with him in Italy. One of them was a Paul Hancock. They were in the 600th and stationed at Campo Carlo Ederle in Vicenza, Italy during the time period of 1964-1967. The 600 is having a reunion next month. If anyone on the list is acquainted with this Paul Hancock, please ask him to get in touch with Richard Early, Rt. 2, Box 1055, Kents Store, VA. 23084. Or email him at <hdriderRCE@aol.com> Thanks for allowing me to digress from genealogy for a short while. :) Wandra
