Stranger things have happened!! I don't know how they got it, but the big thing with these websites is that all your research becomes the property of whoever owns the site. Even if you click on 'don't submit' when you update your files, if you have loaded it onto these web pages, you have given them the right to do whatever they please with your work. I have no problem with other people getting my information. My problem is with the companies making all the money on our hard work at the expense of other researchers. Sure, the info is on the website if anyone wants to try to take it, but usually they won't go to the trouble to get the files like this. They have plenty giving their work to them outright. Anyway, when the project was put together, one of the first things decided by the list was not to go with this type of website, as many people did not want to turn their info over to someone to make money on it. The least we could do was honor their wishes. I definitely know of a situation with Ancestry where that happened. Acutally the one woman gave her files to a cousin to submit, and the cousin put her own name on it. I don't think Ancestry did it, but since she sent it in, they could have. The lady who did the work was wild, and Ancestry did give her the credit after she explained how it happened. It could be that someone took the info off of your site, and sent it in, giving you the credit for it Lisa, because they felt guilty. Do you think that is possible? I am always a little bit afraid of these sites, and yet I would like to see as many people as possible have all the information that has turned up, to help with their lines. I just don't like the idea of them selling my work. > > Ardath > > > ==== HANCOCK Mailing List ==== > Feel free to post the data you find on HANCOCK > in your research. I have used Family Tree Maker program since 1991 and in those 10 years I have checked NO whenever I reached another milestone and they ask if I would like to submit. I have sent info to several online 'cousins' and have found that information on the World Family Tree CD's of FTM but it was not submitted by me. That is sometimes bothersome but when you give your research away it is no longer yours. Odessa
Lewis Hancock is listed as the head of household in the 1840 census for Hamilton County, Tennessee, on page 148, entry 8. It list his spouse as 30 - 40 yr old. Then there are males 5 and under, two males 10 - 15. There is also two female 5 - 10 yrs. and one female 15 - 20. If somebody has any information about these individuals, please contact me. Jerry P. Does anyone out there have any info on a William and Anderson Hancock in Casey Co Ky in 1830 census? Thank you Tamara
I agree that FTM does sell the info that is SUBMITTED TO THEM FROM THEIR PROGRAM , but I know of no instance where FTM has taken any information from anyones website and sold it to the public. I have used it for years and when it asks me if I want to submit my info to them for their CD's I just click on NO. Bill Cook, 7 year FTM user
The reason I replied to the list question and not the private one is that they both came in on the same email download for me. Running slow lately due to a case of walking pneumonia. I will go through files today to pull out the information we have available to go on the website. Will get back with you after I get through some of them. Hi again Lisa: You have probably already considered this, but is there a reason that the Project can't simply use a program simliar to what WorldConnect uses, which allows downloading gedcoms? What I mean is this: I use Family Tree Maker program. I keep my FTM file updated with any new info/changes, etc. I have my gedcom with over 8000 names at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project. When I want to update at WorldConnect, I simply make a copy of my FTM file (which has the current info) in gedcom format, and send the gedcom to WorldConnect. This way all I need do is keep my FTM program info current, and from time to time update at WorldConnect. Is there a similar way we can have such a master gedcom for each line at the Project which is we can keep updating? Jim
Ardath, I have no preference on the software. I would not spend alot on it, as all the ones I've tried are very much the same. You won't need lots of the add-ins that run the cost up on the software. Once you have it, let me know and we'll get you started. I think my server was having trouble this morning. I hope that our input does actually help. We don't need arguments, we need to cooperate, which is what I was trying to impress on everyone. You shouldn't have to be overloaded before others are willing to help. The stress alone, will effect your health also, as is will for Julia, John and others. Hi Lisa, My son had Microsoft Office 2000. He did an upgrade off the net, and from his discs. I will wait for tomorrow so he can check it. It should have "Front Page" in it which has most everything. I didn't have to spend a penny, which was nice. He had purchased it but registered it on line, on my computer, so it is really registered to me but my son used it for our business, not on line. We have 3 PC's but only mine is on line, and I have the high speed internet - on the phone lines, but not on cable or TV. Too many problems yet. I went pricing them today, and was told that if we have Microsoft Office 2000, which is the professional productivity Disc, it should have everything I need. I remembered my son buying it so here I am, almost ready to go. He did an install tonight, but had to go out, so it will be tomorrow before I know that everything is up and working. Because I do have him as my back-up, I am reasonably confidient I can do whatever you need. I was a typist which should help also. Most of the upgrades are on the net, once you have purchased the orginial discs, so it is just a matter of having the patience to wait while they down load, check the files and do the changes. I am lucky, but I hope the others will also pitch in, if not, I'll just keep plugging away at it. I'll drop you a quick note tomorrow to let you know if it is working. I still have trouble sending to your E-mail address. I use Outlook Express, but I have no idea why this problem. It sounds a bit like you are trying to put us on the spot with this comment. Since you send your email to volunteer only to me, everyone doesn't know that you have volunteered to help. So far, of the 3 volunteers, no one is able to actually work on the website, as it is not something I can send you instructions to do in an email. First of all, all 3 of you will need some sort of web design software. Doesn't really matter which one as long as it does the htm formatting for you. I will send you all the settings for the pages that you need to load. Then I also need your snail mail addresses in order to send you information that needs to be typed into these htm formatted sheets. I have stacks of documents that we had planned to put online that you can type up. Once you have these completed and ready for the site, you will need to send them via email to me as an attachment and I will upload and link them to the actual site. I will do that part of it since you don't have web design experience, as it is something that you can't be instructed to do in one easy email. It is a bit like any other type of computer programming and not something that you just follow a list of instructions to do. If you'd prefer to send your addresses off the list, my email is lpcraven@triad.rr.com. Helene, I already have your address, and will get with you on this as soon as you let me know that you have the needed software and are ready to roll on it. I will wait to hear from each of you. This is great. At long last, maybe some of this information can be put online that will help everyone researching the Hancock family. As far as working on the lines, that is just major a web design that I will start trying to draw up. I will get back in touch with the list when I am ready for your input. I will try to do this in small pieces to build into the project to help prevent overload again. I will warn everyone though, my time is very limited right now. I don't think that sentence was needed, - "All of us are not sucking sour pickles! " It is such comments that cause squabbles on lists, and is inflamatory. What is needed is volunteers, willing to pitch in and help Lisa & Julia during a time of crisis. I would certainly be willing, and although I couldn't design a Web Site, I am sure there are jobs I could do. It is all well and good to hand out the bouquets, but they don't need to be buried under a ton of flowers, they need help!! Who is willing? There must be knowledgeable people on this list who could do something, so let's speak up, and if you don't, you have no reason to either complain, or to hand out rewards. Just my two bits worth.
