Paula, your message intrigues me. My earliest Hancock ancestor is Absalom Hancock and he shows up in 1800 in Patrick Co, VA. Most of the Hancocks in the area do not have biblical names. I have not been able to link my Absalom with any of the other Hancocks in the area. There is an Absalom Hancock in the 1700's (the exact date eludes me at the moment) in Halifax Co. I believe there are other biblical names in Halifax Co ..and it seems that I have seen Obediah there, but am not sure. Absalom married Martha Graham in Patrick Co in 1805. They had one son, Peter Fleming (my gggrandfather) and 3 daughters. Absalom was much older than Martha which leads me to believe that he was probably married before. The Halifax Absalom had "4 white souls" in his household. There is a family story that the family moved west when the house burned so it is plausible that the Halifax Absalom is the same as the Patrick Co one. Anyway, the county lines have shifted back & forth etc. so it is also plausible that your ancestor & mine were closely related and both came from Halifax originally. What do you think? Wandra

My Hancock's are from southwestern Va. Earliest ancestor is Obediah Hancock showing up in Wythe county 1840 census. His son, George Washington Hancock married Julia Wyrick in 1853 Wythe county,Va. George's son, Marcus Walker Hancock born 1855 is my great-grandfather. Walker had 7 children. His son, the sixth child,Andrew Ballard Hancock is my grandfather. Andrew died in the 1918 of the spanish flu. My mother the only child of Andrew and Edna Pauley Hancock. George's marriage to Julia is the preacher's return only, no parents listed. George Washington Hancock is listed as one of Obediah's children in Kegley's Lost Children of Wythe book. George is not listed in Obediah's family in the 1850 Wythe census. The 1840 census only list head of household, male/female and ages. George fits in the 1840 census and that fit is missing in the 1850 census where names are also provided. George and Julia show up in the 1860 Wythe census, along with my Marcus Walker Hancock now listed. Walker married a Mahaila ? who was born in 1860 Giles county,Va. Mahaila is my Andrew's mother, although her maiden name remains a mystery. Mahaila died in 1910 when in Va. there were no records recorded. All records only list her as Mahaila E. Andrew was born March 17,1897. Andrew married Edna Mae Pauley in Bristol, TN. March,1917. My mother was born April,1918. Edna and Andrew both died in Oct.,1918. My mother was raised by her maternal Pauley grandparents. So many Hancock questions. My line is pretty well documented in chart #1, so I don't have questions about it. But I'm wondering if there are any "cousins" who aren't too far back, who are on this mailing list. My Hancocks were in VA for centuries, before my GGGrandfather James (1852-1915 and married to Alice "Lollie" Williams) moved from Lynchburg out to California (where I am) in the early 1900's. He and his wife returned to Lynchburg to be buried. His father was Ammon Good Hancock (1815-1888), a prominent tobacconist in Lynchburg. Anyone out there descended from Ammon or especially James, who might be able to fill in information about these generations and below? We're pretty much "out of old people" in my family who might remember any of James' children, and what happened to many of them. I don't know of any relatives left in Lynchburg, although I'm sure there are some there. thanks! Donna Hancock donna@nethancock.com www.nethancock.com

Hi list: Can anyone identify the Hancocks below: Will of Thomas Burton dated 28 Apr 1790 in WB 4 P 370 (Chest Co., Va), which refers says "...to my grandson, George Hancock, son of George Hancock, Sr, my whole estate..." Burton's daughter is shown by some to be Sarah, but I don't have proof of that. Thanks for any help! Jim Hancock
hello Linda, seen your hancock list message about wm.and phebe. Are they of your line .I found these people also in 1850 and wondered what happen to them.My interest in them is that Wm gave Maryland as place of birth.I have a great great grandfather who was born in Maryland and all other lines have been dead ends.Wm caught my eye because my gggrandfather named his first son Wm .or at least his first son that lived.Have been hoping to find someone who was working on this line in hope that it may be my missing link.Did you look in 1880 census for this phebe .I believe William may of died in Civil War .Not for sure.Thank you for your time. Hello I have found a William Hancock who married a Phebe Shrack 1850 Delaware Co IN On the 1870 Danville, Hendricks Co, IN census, I found Phebe Hancock, head of house with 4 children. Is anyone familiar with these people? Might the Phebe's be one and the same? Also, when male head of house was engaged in Civil War duties, how would he have been counted on the census? Thanks for any and all helps! Linda Hancock
My Thomas Hancock was the Randolph Co. NC sheriff in 1826. Don't know who his parents were. The family came to AR by way of Missouri. I also descend from Benjamin Bolling (Bowling, Bolen) but I had no idea that the families might be connected in any way. My Bollings were from Stafford, then Tazewell VA and then on to Huntsville, AL Think that there might be any connection anywhere? Love to hear from you. Carolyn Krodell Fayetteville, AR
Hi! I saw your posting on Hancock-L and decided to e-mail and since I am related to both Bollings (Bolin) and Hancocks, I thought I would ask if you know anything of a Benjamin Bolling and Sarah Hancock that lived in Randolph Co. N.C. near Seagrove? Billie Bocetti
Has anybody been able to find any marriage date for Clement and Mary Renfro? I was also wondering if Clement could be a middle name and possibly John his first name. Any help would be appreciated. kathy kendrick
Helen, My line has an Augustus Clarence Hancock born 12/3/1830 in GA and his wife was Mary Jane Stephens who was born September 14, 1832 in Georgia. The were married 12/23/1851 in Baldwin County, Georgia. I find it odd that the exact same peoples names were married on the same day in another state. Please contact me as I would love to compare information. Gary Gary A. Gavegan 24810 Pecan Creek Lane San Antonio, Texas 78255 Gavegang@cs.com
Hey Gary & all: Subject: Re: [HANCOCK-L] AL Hancock Marriages I GOOFED big time. This is not my Augustus Hancock. Wish it was. My Augustus MELTON Hancock is son of my Isham and in fact married Mary Knight 27 January 1873. So much for using the top of my head. Augustus was born 1841 either in AL or Georgia. Helene Gary A.
