My mother's mother was a Hancock, but the Y-chromosome DNA is only passed from father to son, so your mother doesn't have the DNA. Your grandfather, Hancock, or any of his brothers, sons, nephews or male cousins, or if your mother has brothers, nephews or male cousins. They must be named Hancock and will have the DNA of William L. Hancock. Julia

    3. I'm curious if you know the source of the dates here. The locations look right, but I found a marriage record the Catharine to James Gardner in Floyd Co., IN dated 1831. And , based on the 1840 census of them in Floyd Co., Catharine would seem to have been born between 1800-1810. I've seen other's files that show other, earlier years for her birth also, and have never figured out if there's some info on her somewhere I'm missing. I suppose it could be somebody trying to match known daughters names with the females listed in the 1800/1810/1820 census.... 2. Julia - Just re-read your info about the DNA project. Guess my sons would not qualify because they have two female Hancocks in between the male line. However, I have a cousin who is a direct descendant in the male line. Guest I'll see if he's interested in testing. Theda Kells Hoyt

    2. Julia - I don't know what all is involved with the DNA project, but my Grandfather Henry Clay Hancock was a great grandson of William L. and Sarah Harding. His father was William V. Hancock (m. Rhoda Dunnagan) and his grandfather was William Hancock (m. Sarah Asher). Having so many Grandfathers named William hasn't made research really easy. Theda Kells Hoyt

    2. Cindy, John D. Hancock did have a son, William Wesley Hancock, who married Martha "Patsy" Rutherford. They reared 10 children. This is my line, and I have a pretty good Genealogical lineup of this leg of the family. William Wesley had a brother, John Mark Hancock, and a brother Henry. William Wesley also had one son, John Duren Hancock, and 9 daughters. John Duren was may grandfather. He died in 1932. Bill

Cindy > The DNA test requires a male of the surname of Hancock, as the Y-chromosome DNA that is used for Genealogy testing is passed from father to son, to son, to son, etc., forever with little or no change. So if you should submit the DNA of a male from your line, and it should match another participant, it would prove that you are from the same line. Comparing your paper research, would help to find your Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA). We began this Project only a few weeks ago, so we have no results in, yet. We have nine who have ordered the Test Kits and seven have been returned to the lab. The results will be posted with an ID# plus the Earliest Known Ancestor of each participant. After this first round of results are in, we will know what other Hancocks we need to test in each line to try for more matches and to answer those brickwall questions that have plagued researchers for years. In my French line, I got a match on the first round and got past the place where all of us FRENCH researchers had been stuck for years. Our HANCOCK DNA website will help to answer questions and from there you can join the group by clicking on "Order your DNA Test Kit". We recommend the second choice which is the Y-DNAplus, but the Y-DNA test is very useful, also, and can be upgraded at a later date if desired. Let know if you have more questions. http://www.small-stuff.com/HANCOCK/DNA/ Julia French Wood Adm. Hancock DNA Project

    2. I don't know if this is coincidence or not. I saw the name Dionysis and Oliver Hancock Tillman in the list. Dionysis Oliver was from Edgefield, SC. Oliver Hancock was probably his brother-in-law. Both lived in Edgefield, SC. Originally they were from Petersburg, VA. Dionysis Oliver founded the town of Petersburg, GA at where the Broad River and the Savannah River come together. This town is now under the waters of Lake Thurman. Oliver Hancock, his brother John Hancock, his brother Thomas Hancock's widow, and maybe another brother William Hancock moved to Talbot County, GA in the 1830s. I have a family line for Oliver Hancock if you need it. Mary Wolfe
