Biography of Benjamin Hancock Benjamin Hancock was born in Madison County, Alabama in 1820. His parents were Anne and Clement Hancock. There were 10 children in the family, 5 sons and 5 daughters. On February 21, 1844, at the age of 24, Benjamin married Balsora Andrews. They then had three children, Benjamin, and 2 daughters, Nancy G., and Mary D. (I'll add something about the three additional children by another marriage) Benjamin was a farmer, like his father, Clement, and his grandfather, Robert had been. Benjamin inherited land from his father in the northwestern corner of Madison County, near the Limestone County line. The family lived in Alabama until 1856, when they then migrated to the Crockett area of Houston County, Texas. Houston County is in eastern Texas where cheap land was still available. Prior to Texas becoming a state, in 1845, the Mexican government invited settlers into Texas with free land offers. As a result, there was very cheap land available in Texas. The family moved there to take advantage of better opportunities, and also possibly because of a family dispute over a lawsuit. In 18??, Balsora, her brother-in-law John R. Hancock and her son Richard Clem filed a lawsuit in Madison County, Alabama against Benjamin to prevent him from any further financial dealings with the family farm acreage. The reason charged in the lawsuit was Benjamin's excessive drinking. Apparently when Benjamin was drunk, he tried to sell parts of the family farm, and other possessions. . As a result, their land became isolated within other landowners with no access into their land. As a result the Judge voided some of the land sales so as to provide access to the farm. Benjamin was 36 years old when the family arrived in East Texas. They lived on a family farm in eastern Houston County located between Kennard and Crockett. The location of the farm is not known but Benjamin and Balsora are both buried in the "Old Shady Grove Cemetery". The cememtery is located a little southwest of Kennard and only accessible with assistance by someone who knows where it is. It is adjacent to an access lane for a power line. The cemetery is very badly grown over with few grave markers left. The Shady Grove School was also located there at one time but is no longer in excistence. Compiled by Bill Felknor
>From The Hamilton Hearald, Hamilton NE. Aug 19, 1886 Communicated: On Friday August 6, 1886 Nathanial S. Hancock, aged about 54 years. The deceased was born in Licking county, Ohio, in 1832, and moved west and followed the settlements up to this county this state, very much impaired in health, from which his decease was the end. He leaves a large family consisting of wife and grown up children to mourn his death, as well as the entire community, who express deep sympathy. He lived an earnest member of the Christian church and died happy in his faith, calling his weeping family around him directed his own burial and that is should be simple and plain, his grave to be on his own claim and to be interred without waiting the coming of any absent relatives. And in peace he sank to that eternal sleep. O, death where is thy sting? O, grave where is thy victory?
I am on vacation for two weeks, see you all later. Janet

Hi everyone, I wanted to thank each of you for your kind words concerning my husband LEE HANCOCK. He finished his radiation the 1st of May, didn't get to see the doctor, but he will go the 15th to his regular cancer doctor and we will know then IF there is anything they can do for the lung cancer. His spine is still hurting but that could be due to the fractured vertebrae and the one that the cancer had eaten into. He has a few good days, so that is good. He isn't taking chemo...he doesn't want to be sicker than he is now. I wish there was a way I could submit his DNA for testing, but right now $$$ are very tight. :( I am reading all the email to see if we can find another line that is connected to his starting with Clement Hancock. Prayers for you and yours and wishing you more than enough to meet our needs. Julia, I thought I remembered talking to you before. As you can see I still have not gotten any further with my line. The line I am trying to connect to is a group of Hancocks who came from Va, Ky, Tn, Al, and then MS. I guess this is a route they sometime traveled to go west. I did find Tarleton, Leman and John L Hancock in the 1850 Wayne Ct, census. They have Tabatha which is there mother as being born in Va and living with John L in 1850. My mother seems to remember a John L that had 9boys.I have been hunting the census records in Wayne and Copiah Ct but some of them are really big. I go onto Ancestry.com and for 1860 Copiah Ct, there is 500 and some pages. I have John L,Leman, and Tarleton as being born in Tennessee. I guess I need to find a index for Tn because I do not know which County they may have been in. This has been one of my most frustrating lines. Since,my mother is a Hancock and we can't get further back then her grandfather. I do hope some one can help. Thanks, Mary

Fitting words, but if you go back to a generation where there were sons and follow each son down to see if they had sons and follow those, you may find a living male that is related to you. Another good way that I have found on some of my surnames is to go to Genforum.com or the Genconnect boards at Rootsweb.com and find the Hancock surname board. Do a search that includes your ancestor's name and key words to filter out the others and if you see a researcher who has left a message as working on your Hancock line and they are named Hancock, send them a message about the DNA Project. Thanks, Julia. My line is the William James Hancocks (married Eliza Jane Saunders) with a bunch of other William Hancocks of Great Britain, NC, SC, Ala, GA, Mi, Mo (I think), and TX as far as I know:) I believe, if I am following genealogy at all, that my line died with Martha Jane Hancock (married Sterling Fisher, San Marcos, Hays County , TX). Martha Jane Hancock was a DAR member. So were her daughters. The proof they used to be members of DAR is recorded somewhere I am sure. How does one go about locating DAR lineage records? By the way, I think this group is great ('warts' and all)! Judi "Do you ever feel like the whole world's a tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes?" George Gobel

The y-chromosome DNA is only passed male to male. A daughter doesn't receive it, so it must be a male with the Hancock surname all the way down. Not fair is it? But we have, finally, found out what we need men for. <g> Julia
Perhaps this question has been answered, but I am wondering why the male surname must be HANCOCK if there is absolute proof that Hancock is a direct family name? Does it have to do with the number of times the name is removed from the Hancock family tree by diluting the study? Thanks for the information in advance. Hey, Mary, I met you many years ago when we were both looking for our Mississippi Hancocks. How are you? I will do some census searches for you when I can find a free minute. Julie, Thanks, for your help. I am glad I got on line finally. I could not have done it without the Hancock researchers help. Thanks. Mary
Becky, I would like appreciate any help you can give. I have been searching for my Robert Hancock for a long time. I work on it for awhile and then give up. Then I get started again. I do know that Robert was married twice. First to Mary Burns and had two children Wiley & Maggie. Secondly, to Lula McCoy and had my grandfather Willie and Lillie Bell. Because, I have no way to find him I am trying to find his cousin John Alexander in the hopes that I can make the connection that way. At this point I am not expecting much, but maybe something will turn up. Thanks for looking. Mary
Hi, This is written in the hopes that someone out there will have a connection to my Hancock line. I have been hunting for my great grandfather without any results. According to my mother she remembers a relative who told her that John Alexander Hancock was a cousin. My line is with Robert Scott Hancock he was born in 1847 and lived in Mississippi. I figured that John's father Josiah Flowers Hancock was probable my great grandfathers brother. I did find some Hancocks in the Warren Ct, Ms census for 1850. They were John L, Leman, and Tarleton. Tarleton is also a name that was mentioned as an Uncle. Does anyone connect to these Hancock's or know of them? Mary
